Winter Activities For A Kennebunkport Maine Getaway

The sun rose this morning to reveal the first thick frost of the season here in Kennebunkport Maine, and despite the late fall colors on the trees, it got us thinking about the great winter activities available here on the Maine coast. While skiing is often one of the first winter activities that comes to mind, Southern Maine doesn’t have the elevation gains for downhill skiing – but that means that we enjoy beautiful beaches year round! But we know that not everyone loves to hit the slopes, and would rather enjoy après-ski ski activities like snuggling by a fire or sipping cocoa or enjoying an adult beverage that warms you to the core.  And those are definitely things that you can enjoy right here at the Maine Stay Inn!

Now, a winter getaway to Kennebunkport Maine doesn’t mean that you can’t hit the slopes – you’ll find excellent skiing just over an hour from the inn. Get a little more cardio in with cross country skiing and snow shoeing, both of which are available very nearby. Those with snow shoes at home should bring them, because the miles of trails at the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust properties or at Laudholm Farm are perfect for trailblazing in a beautiful setting.

And what winter getaway would be complete without ice skating? Fortunately the Waterhouse Center, a partially enclosed skating rink (complete with Zamboni!) right in the heart of Kennebunk, sits just 10 minutes from the inn. Warm up with freshly baked pastries, soups, or warm drinks at Boulangerie, a proper bakery adjacent to the rink. The next thing that comes to mind is ice skating, clearly!

Want to enjoy the winter spirit without the work? Hop on a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the woods and fields (but not to grandmother’s house!) at Rockin’ Horse Stables. You’ll be nice and cozy with hot cocoa and warm blankets and you can enjoy the fresh snowfall without the effort!

Outdoor activities not your cup of tea? Check out the incredible cooking classes at Jillyanna’s Woodfired Cooking School right here in Kennebunkport. Whether you warm up in front of the fire for their classic wood-fired pizza making course or check out a seasonal pie baking class, you’re sure to have a blast (and leave with a full belly). Hoping to do some retail therapy in Kittery? Stop by Stonewall Kitchen Cooking School in York for one of their many classes – or just some delicious taste testing! No matter how you spend your winter getaway to Kennebunkport Maine this year, there are tons of great activities to enjoy!
