Judi and Walter Hauer think of themselves as Bostonians, although neither of them were raised there.
Walter was born in Czechoslovakia and grew up in Germany, while Judi was born and raised in Ohio.
Both spent their adult lives living close to Boston, mostly in Belmont. After many years of marriage without children, their daughter, Johanna, was born in 1987, and suddenly life became more exciting.
Balancing their careers as sales executives while raising and educating Johanna was further complicated by Johanna’s avid interest in figure skating.
A Lifestyle Change
When Johanna left for college, Judi and Walter had a chance to consider changing their lifestyle. While many of their friends planned out a retirement, the Hauers explored the possibility of becoming innkeepers. They set their sights on Kennebunkport after selling their home in Boston.
The Hauers had spent only two weekends in Kennebunkport prior to settling on this community for their new endeavor, but it felt just right. They love this sophisticated, yet quaint town with its many galleries, boutiques, and fine restaurants — not to mention the spectacular seashore!
Discovering Maine Stay Inn
The Maine Stay Inn, a grand sea captain’s home, captured their hearts, with its sprawling grounds and private cottages. Judi and Walter love the inn’s proximity to the ocean, where they often enjoy scenic walks and biking along Maine’s breathtaking coast.
Johanna worked full time at the inn for several years after college graduation, but then decided to pursue a career in oral and maxillofacial surgery. She completed 4 years of dental school at Tufts in Boston and is now involved in a 6 year hospital residency program at the University of Conn. Her schooling is challenging, but she still finds time and energy to help with room renovations and landscaping projects.
