Columbus Day Weekend is Approaching on the Maine Coast

While not recognized across the nation, Columbus Day Weekend is a big fall holiday weekend here in New England, which means that there is lots to do an enjoy in and around Kennebunkport. This year’s Columbus Day is sure to be no exception! Although normally when we are just days away from Columbus Day Weekend, the fall foliage is at or near the peak of incredible color for leaf peeping, but due to an exceptionally warm early September, the colors are really just popping now. By the end of the week, the foliage should really be taking on its classic autumn hue, and that means lots of great opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.

So while there are plenty of great outdoor activities to enjoy – like hiking, biking, and on-the-water adventures – but there are so many other activities to enjoy in the area that are sure to make an October getaway extra special. Celebrate Fall this Columbus Day Weekend!

Beach. Starting at Trinity Church by Mother’s Beach, this 90 minute walking tour explores the unique history of this seaside community  – arranged by the Brick Store Museum, you can be sure they’ve got the story down pat!

Once the weekend really kicks into high gear, there are countless activities to enjoy – from a trip to the local farmer’s market in downtown Kennebunk (with an amazing assortment of baked goods, prepared foods, as well as local produce) to a massive 2-day craft fair and everything in between. This year’s 36th Annual Library Craft Fair, held at the Wells Elementary School always features amazing crafters from all over New England. Also not to be missed is the 15th Annual Coastal Kitchen Tour, where some of the breathtaking homes of the Kennebunks open their doors to the public (yep, this one time snooping is allowed!). All proceeds go to the local senior center, so this fun event has a feel-good twist too!

One of the things that makes Kennebunkport so unique is the the Seashore Trolley Museum, the only museum of its kind. With countless trains, trolleys, and loads of tracks, you can enjoy a vintage ride and take in the fall foliage – but don’t miss this, because they are only open through the end of October! Or head down to Ogunquit for a piano concert on Friday, or any of the world-class performances of Jersey Boys at the Ogunquit Playhouse. The catchy music of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons has audiences humming along to this incredible performance.

No matter how you spend the holiday weekend, there is much more fun to enjoy throughout fall foliage season after Columbus Day Weekend here in Kennebunkport Maine!
