Blueberry Picking on the Southern Maine Coast

One of the first things that comes to mind when thinking about Maine is blueberries, and the season for blueberry picking is now upon us here on the Southern Maine coast! While the sandy soil in Kennebunkport isn’t ideal for berries, you don’t have to go very far from the coast to enjoy the sweet fruits of summer. Fortunately, there are plenty of wonderful places to enjoy the classic Maine summer activity by picking your own not far from the Maine Stay Inn.

Closest to your boutique Kennebunkport hotel, you can head up the road to Dragonfly Meadow Blueberry Farm in Arundel. The farm is not far off Route 1, which means you can do some antiquing on your way! On the way, you will pass Patten’s Berry Farm – it’s the spot to pick strawberries in early summer, and you should still stop to check out their adorable farm store! Here you can find loads of local blueberries, but their fields are not full of blueberries at this time of year so head on out of Kennebunkport towards Arundel. Continue further north and you will find Ives Berry Farm in Saco, ME. If you’ve been hankering for a ride on the ferris wheel, you can check out the old fashioned amusement park on the beach in Old Orchard – but pass on the cotton candy, because you’ll want to fill up on the delicious berries nearby!

Just a few minutes from the Maine Stay, you’ll find Spiller Farm in Wells, ME. It his a full service farm with options to pick berries, apples, pumpkins and more! You’ll always find something to pick, and wandering through their acres of fields is great fun! Right now you’ll find raspberries and blueberries, and the apples ought to be coming along strong – so don’t forget to explore the orchard during your visit. Not far past Spiller Farm in the town of Limerick (insert cute rhyme-y poem here!), you will find Libby and Sons Farm with over forty acres of fun! After picking bushels of berries from their Highbush blueberry bushes, don’t miss out on their homemade blueberry donuts – they are delish! But no matter which spot you choose, you are sure to leave with purple fingers, full bellies, and lots of great memories of your Maine summer vacation!
