3 Great Running Routes in Kennebunkport

In honor of Global Running Day, we are looking at the best running routes in Kennebunkport. From 5Ks to full marathons and everything in between, the streets and paths of this seaside village are prime territory for runners, walkers, and leisurely strollers alike. With treelined streets, historic architecture, peaceful trails, and incredible ocean views, it is hard to pick which atmosphere to enjoy during a run through Kennebunkport, but the beauty is that you just can’t go wrong! And while it’s tough to narrow the options down to our favorite 3 routes, there are a few standouts that bear mentioning.

One of the shortest routes around is also probably the most popular – an out and back along Ocean Avenue to Colony Beach – it’s about a half-mile each way, but since it is out-and-back, you can tack on as much mileage as you’d like. On this route, you’ll see marinas on the Kennebunk River, historic homes, and a beautiful beach, complete with a jetty! Head a little farther out and you’ll find St. Ann’s Church by the Sea, a stunning stone church on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean.

Those looking for a 5K-ish route, you can head to the left out of the Maine Stay Inn until

you reach the fork with South Maine Street and bear right. Continue onto Haverhill St. when you see the Atlantic Ocean straight ahead, and then turn right onto Ocean Avenue. Head back toward downtown Kennebunkport Maine and at the monument in Dock Square, turn right up Spring St. Then take a quick right onto Maine Street, and the Maine Stay will be on the left. This might just be one of the pretties 5K courses that exist!

But my favorite is what I fondly refer to as “the loop” – a 4.5-5 mile run that is perfect for exploring the quiet coves or just cruising along to bang out the miles! Like the route above, head left out of the Maine Stay, but continue past the first fork. At the Wildwood Fire Station, you’ll bear right at the fork onto Turbat’s Creek Rd. When Turbat’s Creek Rd. becomes a private way on the left, you can head down to the water’s edge at a “secret cove” that is perfect for pictures or cooling off in the water. If you’re clocking your time, continue onto Ocean Ave, and bring it back to downtown. On your way, those looking for scenic stops should check out the private rocky beach (accessed on foot only) at Halcyon Way, the Bush Compound, the jetty at Colony Beach, or stop for a snack in Dock Square. Want to head back to your boutique Kennebunkport hotel? Turn right onto Green Street to bring you from Ocean Ave. to the Maine Stay.

But no matter what route you choose, there are countless ways to enjoy the Maine Coast, and everyone at the Maine Stay is happy to share their favorite routes, scenic spots, and ideal destinations in town.
