3 Best Ice Cream Shops in Kennebunkport Maine

Summer is here, and that means even more reason to enjoy a cup or a cone of your favorite ice cream – and fortunately Kennebunkport has tons of spots to do just that! From soft-serve and frozen yogurt to gelato or hard-packed and everything in between, you can’t go wrong anywhere. That said, there are a few stand-outs when it comes to ice cream in Kennebunkport, so here are 3 of our picks for the best ice cream.

Grab a cup (or a cone) from Aunt Marie's in Dock Square!
Aunt Marie’s is a hole-in-the-wall ice cream shop in Dock Square, Kennebunkport

On a summer night like tonight, there is nothing better than an ice cream enjoyed in the salt air. So stroll downtown from your Kennebunkport bed and breakfast and find two of our favorite spots for ice cream. Yes, Ben & Jerry’s is a New England (and nationwide) favorite, but we think that you can enjoy something extra special right here in Kennebunkport Maine. Tucked into a corner on Ocean Avenue, you’ll find Aunt Marie’s – a literal hole in the wall. Serving freshly squeezed lemonade and Gifford’s Ice Cream (a local creamery) known for their creamy texture and hard-packed style with traditional flavors, this is a great spot.

Or head around the corner to Rococo, recently rated the best ice cream shop in Maine and a top 10 nation wide. While they make artisan ice cream, it really resembles gelato (and I don’t really know the difference) – and boy, is it good! You might be hard pressed to find traditional vanilla or chocolate, but with flavors like Blackberry Goat Cheese Chambord, Maine Whoopie Pie, or Sweet Avocado, you won’t miss the “usual.”

But a little known spot on your way back from Goose Rocks Beach or Biddeford Pool definitely makes our short list. Goose Rocks Dairy scoops up generous portions of their homemade flavors. My favorite is Peppermint Patty, but all of their flavors are spectacular. And don’t miss out on their hot fudge – it is out of this world! They’ve got Adirondack chairs for lounging, and a gravel driveway that just screams “summer in Maine.” But with dozens of ice cream or yogurt shops just a stone’s throw from the Maine Stay, it’s tough to pick our favorites – that just means you’ll have to sample them all this summer!
