April Vacations to Kennebunkport Maine

April 9th, 2014 by Judi Hauer

Back Alley Kennebunkport Maine

The perfect backdrop for some shopping in Kennebunkport Maine!

While this winter was especially long in New England, April is finally feeling like spring in Kennebunkport Maine, with lots of suns and seasonable temps on the forecast! Now, it doesn’t quite feel like summer vacation or time to take a plunge in the ocean, it really is lovely for exploring the seashore or heading out for a scenic bike ride.  And with April vacations weeks coming up and Patriot’s Day looming, there are all kinds of reasons to head to Kennebunkport Maine for a “spring break.”  So ditch the classic ideas of palm trees and teeny bikinis, and have a grown-up spring break in Kennebunkport this year!  Don’t worry, though, because if the surf is really calling your name, we’ve always got lots of beach towels to dry you off!

In addition to the shopping and dining opportunities that exist all year long in Kennebunkport Maine and surrounding communities, there are oodles of great outdoor activities to occupy your visit this April.  But without any foliage to block the sun’s rays (yet… they are coming!), don’t forget to pack some sunblock!  This beautiful spring weather brings visitors out to enjoy walks and picnics along the Kennebunk beaches.  Plus, it’s just a two minute drive from our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast.  Others are dusting off the hiking boots and really getting in touch with nature, at  the Wells Reserve/Laudholm Farm, Kennebunkport Conservation Trust properties, and the Kennebunk Land Trust trails.  But some visitors might just be content to relax with a book on the wraparound porch at the Maine Stay Inn, in close proximity for yummy beverages and freshly baked cookies!  So whether you’re on va-cay or just looking to play some hooky, Kennebunkport Maine is calling your name to come play this April!

It’s Not Too Late: Third Night Free!

March 26th, 2014 by Judi Hauer

While April is fast approaching, it’s not too late to take advantage our March savings, where you’ll enjoy three nights for the price of two at the Maine Stay Inn in Kennebunkport.  And with New England’s classically confused spring weather, it’s almost like two seasons for the price of one!

It is a Mole Hill: Mount Agamenticus from Kennebunkport Shore

If anything is certain, though, it is that you will want to curl up by our cozy fires at night with your special someone, relax in our jetted tubs, and dig into our hearty gourmet breakfasts each morning.  So join us for three nights this winter (or is it Spring?) for the price of two, because two nights at the Maine Stay Inn just isn’t enough!

St. Patrick’s Day in Kennebunkport Maine

Gearing up for some Irish-style St. Patrick’s Day fun in Kennebunkport Maine!

I’m not exactly sure where February went, but St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner, and fortunately there are great places to enjoy the luck of the Irish in Kennebunkport Maine.  Right in Lower Village, you’ll find Ryan’s Corner House, within an easy walk from the Maine Stay Inn. This authentic Irish pub opened just two years ago, just in time for St. Paddy’s Day, and has quickly become a local favorite.  In addition to some amazing brews, they offer fantastic Irish fare, as well as some more conventionally American options, just in case.  But who can resist an amazing corned beef and cabbage right about now?  But if you’re exploring southern Maine, you can check out their new location a few towns south in Ogunquit.  It’s the perfect spot for a warm-up after a winter walk along the Marginal Way!

But Kennebunkport Maine is lucky to have another great option for St. Patrick’s Day pub crawling – which really is just lingering over indulgent meals for me!  A few minutes up the road on Route 1 is Feile Restaurant and Pub, which also offers great music and entertainment.  We’re so lucky to have three great places to enjoy authentic Irish food and beverages for this holiday (and throughout the year), but now we’re busy turning our attention to crafting a fun, festive, and delicious menu for St. Patrick’s Day.  And though you won’t be finding any live four leaf clovers growing in local fields or lawns quite yet, the plethora of conservation land trusts have lots of trails that are ripe for exploring! So before you tuck into that plate of bangers and mash or put away that pint of Guinness, check out Laudholm Farm at the Wells Reserve, Rachel Carson Wildlife Refuge, the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust, or the Kennebunk Land Trust for some fresh air!  I don’t know about you, but I am definitely getting excited about St. Patrick’s Day in Kennebunkport Maine!

Celebrating Thanksgiving in Kennebunkport Maine

November 14th, 2013 by Judi Hauer

I may be a little bit biased, but celebrating Thanksgiving in Kennebunkport Maine is always a really special time of year, and I certainly think our turkey day visitors agree!  One of my favorite things about Thanksgiving is getting to watch Kennebunkport prepare itself for Christmas Prelude.  I am particularly excited this year, because a recent cold snap has made it feel a lot more like the holiday season, and many of the leaves are off the trees,

which means it will look a lot less silly when folks start stringing lights on their trees and shrubs.

As you may know, I am a teeny bit partial to Kennebunkport Maine at Thanksgiving, because it marked my very first introduction to this amazing town.  It seems like ages ago that I crossed that green bridge into Kennebunkport while checking out colleges during high school, and I never would have guessed that this place would become my home.  Man, was I lucky that my parents chose to visit a Kennebunkport bed and breakfast on our trip!  And while I didn’t end up attending a Maine college, we enjoyed our first Thanksgiving here so much that we visited again the following year.  It was the perfect opportunity to relax!  We sat by a gently glowing fire, reading books and playing games, enjoyed scenic walks along the ocean (yes, it is beautiful even when the weather is a bit brisk), and perused the incredible shopping opportunities in town.  And, I must admit, we even hit up the outlet shops to knock off some Christmas shopping.  So this year, whether you’re joining us solo, sans family, or with the whole clan in tow, you’re sure to enjoy a real getaway.  And best of all, you can enjoy an amazing Thanksgiving meal without any of the work!  As usual, there are lots of incredible restaurants waiting to dish up an old fashioned turkey dinner with all the fixins or something Maine inspired (lobster, anyone?), and we’re happy to help you pick one that’s right for you.  We’re looking forward to a wonderful Thanksgiving in Kennebunkport Maine and hope that you are too!

Christmas Prelude 2013 is Coming to Kennebunkport!

It’s hard to believe, but Christmas Prelude 2013 is well on its way to Kennebunkport!  In fact, it’s less than 30 days away now!  And even though Christmas decorations showed up in the stores promptly on November 1, I can’t quite wrap my head around it being “the Holidays” while there are still leaves on some of the trees.  But the weather is getting much cooler, and the air is getting that crisp, late fall feeling, which means… winter’s not far behind!  So get ready for getting in the holiday spirit with a trip to the nation’s second best Christmas festival, Christmas Prelude in Kennebunkport Maine!  All of us at the Maine Stay Inn feel so lucky to get to experience this incredible event each year from our location just a few short blocks from the heart of the action.  We’re looking forward to Christmas Prelude 2013 and can’t wait to celebrate with you in Kennebunkport!

Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast Romantic Winter Getaways

November 4th, 2013 by Judi Hauer

Over the last few days, the weather at our Kennebunkport bed and breakfast has gotten chillier and it reminds us that the season for romantic winter getaways is starting!  I mean, now that the Halloween decorations have been packed away, the leaves are really falling, and the grocery stores’ piles of clearance candy are finally dwindling, it is the start of Third Night Free time!  Yes, it’s true!  So now you can enjoy a romantic getaway to Kennebunkport

It's time to snuggle up by the fire!

and get a third night at absolutely no cost.  That means 33% extra time for snuggling by the fire, soaking in a whirlpool tub, and 33% more complimentary gourmet breakfasts (which can even be delivered to your suite at no charge!).

From now through April 1, you can enjoy an especially budget friendly getaway to the Maine Stay Inn (certain holiday periods excluded, of course).  Now, whether you are looking for a foodie-filled retreat from daily life or are spicing things up with that special someone, our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast has just the thing you need!  So after a scenic stroll through town or a vigorous walk along the ocean, you can indulge in freshly baked cookies and piping hot cocoa in front of a glowing fire.

We’re happy to suggest just some great indoor and outdoor activities, so no matter the weather your days can be as full as you want them.  Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or hiking might be top on your agenda, but if something more leisurely is up your alley, consider a horse-drawn sleigh or carriage ride, visit to one of the area’s art galleries or museums, or even just a snuggle by the fire.  No matter what you choose, anyone at our Kennebunkport bed and breakfast is more than happy to suggest the perfect spot for dinner out… or dinner in if you’re just that relaxed!  There are a few restaurants in the area that offer a delivery option or the option to grab and go.  Since every couple deserves a chance for a rejuvenating getaway that’s also friendly on your wallet, visit us this winter for two nights and get your third night free!

Halloween’s Coming to Kennebunkport

October 28th, 2013 by Judi Hauer

As American as mums cabbage and pumpkin

Can you spot the creative use of pumpkins in downtown Kennebunkport?

It’s the end of October and signs all around Kennebunkport say that Halloween is on its way!  While many trees are still boasting some incredible fall foliage, many are shedding theirs and sporting their winter look.  But at this time of year, you’ll spot loads of mums all across Kennebunkport (and the Maine Stay Inn is no exception) and pumpkins galore.  Whether they may be perched atop scarecrows or the monument in Dock Square, you’ll surely enjoy picking them out in some unexpected places.  One of my favorite things to enjoy at this time of year is a stroll through the historic districts of Kennebunk and Kennebunkport, viewing spectacular historic homes dolled up in their Halloween finest while hearing the crunch of fallen leaves under foot.  No matter how you spend your days during a getaway to Kennebunkport, you’re sure to discover why Halloween and late fall is such a great time!

Finding Great Lobster in Kennebunkport During the Winter

October 21st, 2013 by Judi Hauer

Finding great lobster in Kennebunkport is probably at the top of nearly every visitor’s list (except you shellfish allergic folks – I send my condolences), and visiting during the winter months doesn’t change that.  And surprisingly, it doesn’t make it much harder!  But yes, I said it.  The W word.  And while there is still tons of

Cold weather won't hamper your chances of finding great lobster in Kennebunkport!

glorious fall weather to enjoy, the days are getting a bit shorter and the temps a bit cooler.  I for one am always reluctant to admit that fall will undoubtedly fade into winter and I will have to eventually break out a real coat.  And mittens.  But there is one thing that always jars me into acceptance, and it happened this past weekend.  Nunan’s Lobster Hut closed for the season.  Don’t fret!  There are still lots of spots to enjoy that perfect Maine lobster you’ve been craving, and you won’t have to venture far from the Maine Stay Inn to enjoy it.

  • For the next few weeks, you can still get that old fashioned lobster shack experience at Mabel’s Lobster Claw on Ocean Avenue, or the down home Maine feel at Arundel Wharf, just a block from the Maine Stay.  Both offer that traditional charm you think of when you think of classic Maine.  Once the weather gets too cold for them to keep their pipes from freezing, pop over to Mike’s Clam Shack in Wells for that old fashioned flair.
  • You can almost always count on Federal Jack’s to be serving, and since they keep tanks for lobsters, it’s a spot that has never disappointed when it comes to delivering a fresh, hot old fashioned lobster dinner.  Even in January!
  • David’s Kennebunkport also whips up a mean lobster dinner within walking distance.  And by that I even mean walking in the snow kind of walking distance.  Seriously it’s like 2 minutes away.  It will take longer to warm up the car than get there on foot.  Plus, they earn big bonus points in my book for a stellar water view.
  • In the heart of Dock Square, just a hop, skip, and a jump from our Kennebunkport bed and breakfast, you’ll find Alisson’s Restaurant, which is almost as consistent as Federal Jack’s when it comes to operating hours.  So while you won’t get a great water view, you can pop in for a quick (and award winning) lobster roll that’s sure to satisfy.
  • In Cape Porpoise, situated right on the harbor, you’ll find Pier 77 and the Ramp, which offers breathtaking views of Goat Island lighthouse and Kennebunkport’s fleet of lobster boats.  And great lobster.  Obviously.

Now, I know that this just barely scratches the surface of places to get great lobster in and around Kennebunkport, but it’s a handy list to keep in mind during an off season visit – now get eating!

Pumpkins! Yes, It’s Fall in Kennebunkport!

October 16th, 2013 by Judi Hauer

Roadside Pumpkins

Snug Harbor Farm always has great pumpkins!

Throughout much of the country, fall is synonymous with pumpkins, and Kennebunkport is no exception!  You’ll find pumpkin spice lattes in area coffee shops, pumpkin creations on most restaurant and bakery menus, and on the front steps of homes and businesses across town.  You’ll even find them topping the festive scarecrows on the door steps of many stores and restaurants in the area, and the best one is floating in a row boat on the river But the best spots to see some great big piles o’ pumpkins, is at one of the great farms stands in Kennebunkport – happy fall!

A Walk in the Woods, Kennebunkport Style!

February 25th, 2013 by Judi Hauer

While much of the state of Maine is heavily wooded and home to some big critters like moose and bears, those of us in Kennebunkport are fortunate to be able to easily enjoy an old-school “walk in the woods” without venturing from the perks of a delightful seaside village studded with awesome restaurants, art galleries, and great shopping.  And frankly, I just love that!  I mean, what could be better than exploring the great outdoors, cleaning up in a luxurious bathroom, and heading out to a great dinner?  But, as usual, I digress.  We already know about how much I love the

Kennebunkport restaurants, but the recent dusting of snow inspired me to get out and explore some of my other favorite places – the natural kind!

So if you are looking for a spot to reconnect with mother nature, you certainly don’t have to venture far from our Kennebunkport bed and breakfast.  After a fresh coat of powder, I love to admire the way bare tree limbs catch the snow, and the best place to do so is at the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust‘s Smith Preserve.  Just a few minutes drive from the inn, it’s easy to zip past the parking lot, especially because it is usually empty.  Seriously, this is a hidden gem!  And with no charge to enjoy the winding loops of trails through the woods, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy some solace in the great outdoors.

Feel like you’d be missing out by not walking along the ocean?  The Wells Reserve at Laudholm Farm is just over the town line, but with over 7 miles of trails (yes, some are wooded!) and a protected strip of coastline, it is a must-visit destination during every season.  But if you’re looking for a little elevation, head just a few miles to our south, where you can hike to your heart’s content at Mount Agamenticus.  Especially during the winter months, the terrain is stunning (and yes, you can see the ocean from the top), and your trip down Route 1 is easy peasy.  No matter what you choose, you’re sure to enjoy the amazing outdoor opportunities in Kennebunkport.
