A Maine Summer Vacation in Kennebunkport

May 19th, 2013 by Judi Hauer

With Memorial Day Weekend just around the corner, that means that it is summer vacation time, and there’s no better place to enjoy a Maine summer vacation that in Kennebunkport!  Now you may think that I am a little biased towards this charming town, but the truth is that I’m “from away” and have explored just about every coastal vacation area in New England and after all of that travel, there’s a reason I landed in Kennebunkport.  Okay, more than a few reasons… So today I’ve decided to share some of my personal reasons for loving Kennebunkport for a Maine summer vacation.

One of the many great summer scenes in Kennebunkport!

One of the many great summer scenes in Kennebunkport!

  • It’s easy to get to!  No seriously, it’s a mere 86 miles from downtown Boston, and since you can cruise up I-95 on your typical three and four lane highways, the trip is easy-peasy.  Plus, with just two wide toll plazas, even that brief slowdown goes quickly (and it’s even speedier if you’ve got and “EZPass”).  Seriously, though, Kennebunkport has to be one of the most pain-free trips to your summer vacation destination and you’ll have plenty of gas to spare!  And if you’re a car-less urbanite, the Amtrak Downeaster is a fantastic and eco-friendly option!
  • You can go car-free in Kennebunkport!  With great sidewalks leading to fantastic activities and restaurants, you certainly don’t need to have a car in town.  Sure, if you want to do some more exploring, you certainly can bring a vehicle (and we have ample free parking), but many folks choose to explore by scooter or bicycle.  And yes, you can get either of those things within a short walk from the Maine Stay Inn!
  • The food is top notch.  Now many vacation destinations have a bad rap for serving less than stellar cuisine, and when you’re a food lover like me, that just takes the wind out of my sails.  But Kennebunkport is full of eateries that offer delectable cuisine that is sure to rival some of the great culinary havens in the country.
  • Kennebunkport has outdoor activities for everyone!  A lot of people don’t think about a Maine Summer Vacation meaning spending time at the beach, but Kennebunkport is known for its long stretches of soft sand and a few bits of craggy coastline, sure to satisfy everyone’s scenery needs.  But fortunately, if you’re looking for a break from some fun in the sun, there are tons of great trails through acres of concentration land and excellent spots for biking.  And if you’re not one to connect with Mother Nature, you can still enjoy a beautiful seaside setting while taking part in some retail therapy!

Honestly, I could go on and on about why Kennebunkport is ideal for your Maine Summer vacation, but the truth is, it’s great any time of year!  All of the innkeepers and staff at the Maine Stay Inn can’t wait to show you first hand everything that Kennebunkport has to offer – see you soon!

Visiting Kennebunkport Maine In September

September 3rd, 2012 by Judi Hauer

It’s hard to believe that Labor Day is already upon us, but fortunately September is a fabulous month in Kennebunkport Maine!  Honestly, September is the forgotten month of summer up here, and while the evenings may be a tad cooler (and who doesn’t love throwing on a cardigan or sweatshirt for a post-dinner stroll?), the days are basically indistinguishable from those of August.  So don’t pack away that swimsuit yet, because there is plenty of fun in the sun to be had this month!  But the beauty of taking your

Check out this quiet beach in Kennebunkport!

“summer vacation” in September is that since most kiddos are back in school – or at least will be this week – the sand is much less populated and far more peaceful.  Did I mention that the water is warmer now than ever?  Yep, it’s true – September brings the warmest water temperatures of the year in Kennebunkport Maine.  But if you’re like my mother, not even that fact will persuade her to take a dip, however, the solitude you’ll find along the shore is still ideal for resting, relaxing, or catching up on some great reading.  Forgot your book?  Take a peek at some of the titles in our miniature library of beach reading or hit up the never ending book sale at the Graves Memorial Library just down the street from the Maine Stay Inn.  Plus with titles starting at just fifty cents, you can stock up on some new reads!

Fortunately for my prone-to-imitating-a-lobster skin, there are oodles of fun things to do in the area that don’t revolve around soaking up some rays.  As always, the galleries have some incredible exhibits up that are just begging for perusing, and the restaurants are in full swing to keep you fueled for exploring the area.  And after an August with lots of sunshine, you’ll find that more and more Kennebunkport restaurants will be featuring local produce on their menus.  But as you know, Kennebunkport is full of fun activities, so stay tuned for updates and upcoming events.

Picking a Maine Bed and Breakfast

July 23rd, 2012 by Judi Hauer

It sometimes seems like there are a gazillion inns in the great state of Maine, so selecting a Maine Bed and Breakfast for your vacation or quick getaway can be a daunting process.  Sure there are lots of travel blogs, review websites, and B&B listing sites, but where’s a person to start the search?  I decided to put on my traveler’s hat and figure out where to go!

Romantic Maine Bed and Breakfast

There’s no denying our 1860 roots!

First, it’s important to decide on what kind of setting you are looking for.  If you’re looking for mountains and cliffs, the Maine Stay Inn is probably not going to make the list for that particular visit.  And if you’re looking for rustic, we’re probably not going to meet you this time.  Beaches for fun in the sun?  Or a quintessential New England village?  We’ve got that covered!

Second, you’ve got to set the tone.  Sometimes your traveling companion(s) set the mood.  I mean, if you’re on a mother-daughter getaway, you’re probably not too concerned about having mood lighting or an oversized whirlpool tub.  And having two beds is usually not on the top of the list when you’re planning a romantic weekend.  Occasionally, though, there’s some overlap, and that’s when you’ve got to use you best judgement and dig a little deeper to find the perfect spot to meet everyone’s needs!  I mean, at our Maine Bed and Breakfast, we are fortunate to have rooms that work great for families and some indulgently romantic suites, but we also have rooms that offer some additional flexibility to travelers seeking to check off more than one box.

Finally, though, you have to pick a style that works for you – and that doesn’t mean just decor.  Yes, if you adore Victorian architecture and design, staying in a sleek modern place is probably not the best fit.  Or, you might that traditional styles float your boat in the wintertime but that you need something a tad lighter during the  summer months.  So once you figure out what’s going to fit the bill for your next vacation, give us a call and we’ll help you determine if our Maine Bed and Breakfast is the right fit or if we’ll have to wait to catch you next time!

Enjoying Outdoor Dining in Kennebunkport

July 2nd, 2012 by Judi Hauer

This evening I received a welcome surprise – a visit from some of my oldest friends – which meant that we just had to pick a dinner locale with outdoor dining in Kennebunkport.  Today graced us with incredible weather that, while on the warm side, meant that sitting outside for dinner was absolutely perfect – no sweaters required.  But on the stroll downtown from our Kennebunkport Bed

row boats in Kennebunkport

You’ll enjoy seeing row boats like these when you experience outdoor dining in Kennebunkport’s Tia’s Topside

and Breakfast, I realized just how lucky we are to have such a great assortment of spots to enjoy a meal in the open air.

Closest to the inn, you’ll find the Arundel Wharf Restaurant with an assortment of indoor, tented, and outdoor dining options.  Its varied and well executed menu mirrors the seating arrangements and the location just can’t be beat!  But if you find yourself desiring a bird’s eye view of the marinas, you could check out Federal Jack’s, the local brew pub.  With a dining room on the second floor and impressive deck space, it is a great option for outdoor dining in Kennebunkport or just enjoying a beer in the open air.  Tia’s Topside also offers deck dining, but instead of checking out the swanky yachts in town, you can enjoy a view of the quiet inlet which is now home to a few gently bobbing row boats.

But if you’re looking for something a little more upscale, you can check out the patio at One Dock.  View?  Not so much, but the food is definitely something to write home about!  But it is still outside, and who can beat summertime in New England?  One big perk, though, is that it is perfect for people watching, which is something I really enjoy, and the light veil of potted plants and trellises is perfect for concealing my gawking.  But since there is live music here nearly every night of the summer, it’s sometimes not the spot for a romantic outdoor dining experience in Kennebunkport.  For that, I recommend heading to Old Vines Wine Bar, whose new patio is just calling my name!  And it’s location next to the lush gardens of florist Fleurant definitely helps counteract the traffic noise from its location on Route 35.  Plus, after a glass of wine or two, it’s sure not to phase you at all!  It’s funny to think that this list doesn’t even cover all of the Kennebunkport Maine Restaurants with outdoor dining, and these are just the few within walking distance of the Maine Stay Inn, but it’s true, so get out there and start eating!

Soaking Up Sun in Kennebunkport Maine

June 12th, 2012 by Judi Hauer

One of the best things about summertime in Kennebunkport is soaking up some rays (with sunscreen on, of course!) without overheating – it’s just one of those perks of being a seaside community in New England.  And as the weather has heated up, more and more visitors of the Maine Stay Innare looking for the best tips on where to catch some sun.  So I thought it might be helpful to

The beach is just one of many great spots to enjoy the weather!

keep you in the loop too!

  • The beach.  I would say “Duh!” but then I’d run the risk of sounding like a snotty pre-teen.  While this one might be obvious, there are enough beaches in the area, that this bears narrowing down.  Gooch’s Beach, just across the bridge in Kennebunk, offers the widest stretches of sand, but also tends to be a favorite spot for families, surfers, and groups playing games.  Maybe you’re looking for something more peaceful for your Kennebunkport vay-cay?  If so, Middle Beach tends to be the least populated, mostly because it has the least sand – so bring a chair (we’ve got plenty for you at our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast) and dig your toes into the most incredible flat, smooth stones you could dream of!
  • On the water.  During calm seas, many guests choose to head off-shore with one of the many boat rides available in town.  The Schooner Eleanor is probably the most popular choice, as trips stay close to shore (offering incredible views), minimizing the chilly air off the sea and embodies the classic and charming feel of Kennebunkport with this hand-crafted 55′ triple masted ship.  Others prefer to go sightseeing under their own steam and rent canoes or kayaks for some on-the-water fun – but definitely make sure you slather up well – those reflected rays sure are strong!
  • With a meal.  Fortunately, Kennebunkport has quite a few wonderful waterfront dining establishments, but Tia’s Topside and the Arundel Wharf to an excellent job of providing wonderful outdoor dining areas along with some great food.
  • At the Maine Stay.  Our big backyard and comfy loungers are calling your name!  Plus, with the shade of a handful of 100+ year old pine trees, you can plan a quick escape if the sunshine gets to you.  Need I say more?

But whatever and wherever you choose, there are infinite incredible spots to catch some sun this summer in Kennebunkport Maine!

Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast to Host Garden Tea Party

June 6th, 2012 by Judi Hauer

As part of this weekend’s Kennebunkport Festival festivities, our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast is getting ready to host a fun tea party in our backyard!  In addition to a variety of teas (both hot and chilled!), we’ll be bringing out lots of traditional teatime favorites. Think English inspired – miniature lemon pound cakes with fresh lemon curd, scones and oh-so-indulgent clotted cream,

and cucumber-mint sandwiches!  So guests will be able to soak up some rays while relaxing on the lawn and enjoying fun finger foods. Plus, guests of the Maine Stay Inn and the other Historic Inns of Kennebunkport can take advantage of complimentary limousine service between the inns.  In fact, each one will be hosting their own garden party, and each serving a different beverage (some, like us, serving teas for a light afternoon refresher, while others have chosen different wines as a pre-dinner cocktail session) along with tasty treats.

And given the spectacular weekend forecast, it’s sure to be an awesome event!  So not only will visitors have the opportunity to enjoy the great food and, of course, great company of other guests and staff members from each Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast, but it will be a fantastic chance to admire some of most historic and quintessentially New England spots in town.  Plus, with transportation provided, you won’t have a care in the world.  And because of this Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast garden party, you won’t have to worry about lunch!  Yes, breakfast has been planned to be especially hearty and will certainly carry you until the fun finger foods come out in the afternoon.  So hit the beach, enjoy the art galleries, or hit up the great boutiques in town, but whatever you do, don’t miss the Garden Parties!

5 Reasons to Choose a Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast This Summer

May 23rd, 2012 by Judi Hauer

I hate to admit it, but I am a teeny bit biased – I just love BnBs, so staying at a Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast for a summer vacation would seem like a natural choice, but it turns out that there are plenty of folks who have only stayed in big hotels.  For them, choosing to visit a B&B would stretch their comfort zone.  But as I enjoyed a leisurely jog through town today, I passed the only big hotels in town, and it got me thinking about why choosing a Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast, like the Maine Stay Inn, is the logical choice for a summertime (or anytime) getaway.  By the time I got back, I had pared my list down to five main reasons (and not in any particular order):

  • Location, location, location!  The fact is, that because B&Bs are smaller than hotels, you’ll get much closer to “the action”  -
    Kennebunkport harbor

Just a block from the harbor!

in Kennebunkport you’d be able to walk to shops, galleries, restaurants, and the waterfront from a bed and breakfast, but not if you chose one of the few area hotels.

  • Top-notch service.  Years ago, a Kennebunkport bed and breakfast might have been just that, but not today!  Innkeepers and staff members are dedicated to providing visitors with the best service possible, without being overbearing.  Not to worry, there won’t be any grannies pounding on your door, reminding you to leave room for the holy ghost here!
  • The food!  At a big hotel in town, you’re lucky to find a continental style smattering of cold muffins or pastries that you can pretty much guarantee haven’t been baked fresh, but at the Maine Stay Inn, gourmet breakfast will greet you daily!  Honestly, what could be better than waking up to the smell of freshly baking breads or rolls?  Plus, close proximity to great restaurants means that you’ll have easy access for the meals we don’t serve.
  • Peace and quiet… shhhh!  Let’s keep this our little secret, but despite being just a few short blocks from the heart of downtown, the Maine Stay sits on nearly two acres of land, which means that the grounds are nice and quiet.  Perfect for relaxing, reading, or socializing with your family!
  • Unique accommodations.  Who wants to have the same experience as the guy at the end of the breakfast table?  Not me, that’s for sure!  So with 17 different rooms, suites, and cottages, you can be sure to have something to fit your style and the experience (and price) you are looking for!

So this summer, the choice is clear – try a Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast for your summer vacation!

Tips for Planning Your Maine Summer Vacation

April 23rd, 2012 by Judi Hauer

It’s that time of year again – time to plan your Maine summer vacation!  Most people can’t just spontaneously jaunt off for a couple of days along the coast, so taking that fun trip means planning.  Now, that’s not my favorite thing, especially because time is always at a premium.  But since you’ve already decided to hit coastal Maine for your vay-cay, I’ve put together a few questions to help guide your efforts.

  • When?  July and August are prime time in Kennebunkport Maine, but if you’re looking for some quality time in the surf,
    Maine Summer Vacation sunset

Whether you're on a romantic getaway or family vacation, add "sunset watching" to your itinerary!

consider early September, which is known for peak water temps.  If quiet, but still toasty, time on the sand, June is also a great time for a visit.

  • Midweek or weekend?  Midweek visits tend to feel a little more laid back than weekend ones, but time away from work can be harder to snag than a quick weekend escape.
  • How long?  Your to-do list keeps growing and the important people in your life are all vying for your attentions, but you deserve some time to just rest, relax, and recharge.  After you check off all the must-dos on your list (think shopping, beach time, sightseeing, etc.), that doesn’t leave much time for R&R, so no matter how long your Maine Summer Vacation, add a day or two – you won’t regret it!
  • Who’s comin’?  Is this going to be a family vacation or mini-honeymoon part two?  And we know from experience, combining the two doesn’t work too well for anyone, so it’s definitely best to decide early.  And if you’re going to live the tykes at home, work on the baby sitting situation early so that tiny Tommy and Tina don’t end up joining in the cuddle sessions during your romantic getaway!  So when you give our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast a call, let us know what kind of mood you’re going for and we’ll be happy to help!
