Planning Your Summer Vacation to a Maine Bed and Breakfast

March 27th, 2014 by Judi Hauer

Today I noticed buds on the trees and that the birds seemed especially active, which means it’s that time of year again – time to plan your summer vacation to a Maine bed and breakfast!  Most people can’t just spontaneously jaunt off for a couple of days along the coast, so taking that fun trip means planning.  Now, that’s not my favorite thing, especially because time is always at a premium.  But since you’ve already decided to hit coastal Maine for your vay-cay, I’ve put together a few questions to help guide your efforts.

  • When?  July and August are prime time in Kennebunkport Maine, but if you’re looking for some quality time in the surf, consider early September, which is known for peak water temps.  If quiet, but still toasty, time on the sand is  tops on your list, June is also a great time for a visit (plus, our Early Summer Special starts at just $169 per night!).

    Maine Summer Vacation sunset

Whether you’re on a romantic getaway or family vacation, add “sunset watching” to your itinerary!

  • Midweek or weekend?  Midweek visits tend to feel a little more laid back than weekend ones, but time away from work can be harder to snag than a quick weekend escape.
  • How long?  Your to-do list keeps growing and the important people in your life are all vying for your attentions, but you deserve some time to just rest, relax, and recharge.  After you check off all the must-dos on your list (think shopping, beach time, sightseeing, etc.), that doesn’t leave much time for R&R, so no matter how long your Maine Summer Vacation, add a day or two – you won’t regret it!
  • Who’s comin’?  Is this going to be a family vacation or mini-honeymoon part two?  And we know from experience, combining the two doesn’t work too well for anyone, so it’s definitely best to decide early.  And if you’re going to live the tykes at home, work on the baby sitting situation early so that your kiddos don’t end up joining in the cuddle sessions during your romantic getaway!  So when you give our Kennebunkport Maine Bed and Breakfast a call, let us know what kind of mood you’re going for and we’ll be happy to help!

Kennebunkport Beaches Welcome Spring

March 21st, 2014 by Judi Hauer

The Water Is Wide

The Kennebunkport Beaches are calling!

While Old Man Winter has hung around a bit longer this year than most New Englanders would like, spring is officially here and today was perfect for enjoying a walk along the Kennebunkport Beaches!  Yes, it may have been a bit breezy, but the sunshine definitely said that Mother Nature has us right on the cusp of true springtime.  And boy was that sunshine a reminder of just how lovely the beaches are in Kennebunkport! While the water might be a little bit too chilly for swimming right about now, it certainly got me thinking about how clear and refreshing the water is on a warm summer day.  Fortunately for those visiting Kennebunkport, there is miles of pristine coastline and soft sandy beaches not far from the Maine Stay Inn.  So whether walking, swimming, or just relaxing is what you’ve got in mind for your Maine summer vacation, there are almost infinite options.  And since all of us are intimately familiar with the area, we’re more than happy to help you select a spot that exactly suits your needs.  And we have a few special spots up our sleeves that always make for an incredible day at the beach!  But if you are like me, and a day at the beach isn’t complete without some delicious nibbles, not to worry – there are quite a few great spots in town where you can pick up prepared gourmet snacks to bring with you to the Kennebunkport beaches.  So when you’re on your way, consider stopping at Cape Porpoise Kitchen, Old Salt’s Pantry, or Market Day, where you’ll find delicious and nutritious noshes to sustain you during even the most vigorous of seaside adventures.  No matter how you choose to spend time in town, you are sure to enjoy the beautiful Kennebunkport Beaches that wrap along the Maine coastline!

Gearing Up for Labor Day Weekend in Kennebunkport

August 25th, 2013 by Judi Hauer

Kennebunkport is looking mighty pretty for Labor Day!

Kennebunkport is looking mighty pretty for Labor Day!

It seems almost impossible that Labor Day Weekend is already upon us, but it certainly is and Kennebunkport is gearing up for a great weekend. This three day weekend is always filled with fun activities and ample opportunities to unwind and relax. Plus, with great back to school sales at the shops in Dock Square, you’ll surely get in some retail therapy that is great on the wallet!  And since the stores in the area are known for their unique and hard to find items, you can be sure the person next door won’t be sporting the same purchases.  Now I am not a huge shopper myself, but one of my absolute favorite things is the School Around Us Craft Fair.  Held on the Kennebunkport town green just around the corner from the Maine Stay Inn, you’ll find great locally prepared foods, musical performances, and, of course, incredible hand made wares.

We’ve been working on some projects all around the inn lately to make sure that your Labor Day Weekend getaway to Kennebunkport is absolutely the best it can be.  And while we are content to offer breakfast and afternoon tea to guests, we are always happy to offer suggestions for area restaurants.  Now that even the newest eateries have been open for quite a few months, each and every one of them is operating at their peak, so we know that you’ll enjoy delicious meals at any of them!  We know, though, that not everyone is obsessed with food or shopping, and fortunately the plethora of amazing outdoor activities in Kennebunkport are incredible.  So whether you head to the beach for a stroll and some fun in the sun or to a local nature and wildlife refuge you will definitely enjoy the beauty of the Maine coast.  No matter what you choose to do to celebrate Labor Day Weekend in Kennebunkport, you’re in for a fun and relaxing escape!

Late Summer Savings at a Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast

August 22nd, 2013 by Judi Hauer

It seems like this summer has just flown by, and everyone I talk to seems to feel the same way, so our Kennebunkport bed and breakfast has decided to make squeezing in an end of summer vacation even more affordable!  So starting this Sunday, you can enjoy rates starting at just $199.  That

A gorgeous day at the beach!

means that any Sunday through Thursday night (with the exception of Labor Day weekend) until September 20, you can take advantage of these great rates.  But not to worry, you will still enjoy all of the perks that you’ve come to love at the Maine Stay Inn.  Gourmet breakfast will be served daily, and with tons of great weather in August and September, you will have plenty of opportunities to enjoy that morning meal or first cup of joe on the front porch.  Our signature cookies will come out of the oven around 3 every afternoon, just in time for your return from the beach (or shopping or whatever fun activities you choose for the day).  And since the water is at its warmest temperatures from late August through September, our Kennbunkport bed and breakfast has complimentary beach passes so that you can park right along the Kennebunk beaches.  Plus, there’s no need to drag along sandy beach towels or rummage around for your trusty chairs, because we’ve got all of that for you!  Not to mention a solid supply of umbrellas, mats, sand toys and boogie boards!

When taking advantage of this Late Summer Special, you’ve got great options, so it might be the time to try out a new option or stick with a tried-and-true favorite.  At the $199 level, you can select the Victorian Charm room, the Four Poster Room, or even the brand new Abbie’s Retreat!  Or for $229, two of you can sample cottage suites 4, 8, 9, or 11 and have the opportunity to enjoy breakfast delivered to your door.  What’s not to love about breakfast in bed?  Or for an added boost of luxury, you could try Captain Walker’s Suite 16 or Cottage Suites 3 or 7 for just $249.  So don’t feel forlorn that the summer might pass you by, because there’s plenty of time to enjoy a late summer vacation to a Kennebunkport bed and breakfast!

Staying Cool During a Kennebunkport Heat Wave

July 20th, 2013 by Judi Hauer

This week has brought an intense heat wave to New England, and Kennebunkport is no exception.  Temperatures have soared into the early and even mid nineties, which is highly unusual for the Maine Coast, but fortunately every room and suite has air conditioning (and some even have brand new energy efficient heat pump based cooling

systems), so everyone has been cool as a cucumber indoors.  That said, on a bright sunny day, hanging out inside is not normally the number one thing on most agendas!  So we loaded folks up with cool beverages and coolers full of ice to keep them refreshed and well hydrated during their fun in the summer sun.  But even with lots of ice water on board, the high temperatures drove many (but not all!) visitors to Kennebunkport to alter their activities.  Because of the extraordinarily warm weather the water is now unseasonably warm, which means that beach time is really a must, but without a cloud in the sky, most folks have been choosing to hit the sand early in the morning or later in the afternoon and opting for other midday plans.  Many have swapped their sunset sails on multi-masted schooners for those during the day, as the water still brings a deliciously cool breeze even on the hottest of days.  Others have chosen to explore shadier areas like the Rachel Carson Wildlife Refuge or the Wells Reserve, each of which offer the cooling ocean breeze and tree protection from the sun.  But don’t forget the bug spray, because neither Reserve treats the properties for mosquitos, and it’s never fun to leave a vacation with oodles of bug bites.  Others have chosen to explore as they normally would, but return for a siesta in our backyard in the shade, courtesy of some towering pines.  But my personal favorite way to spend a Kennebunkport is to cool off with a frosty treat!  And with fabulous spots like Goose Rock’s Dairy, Rococo Artisan Ice Cream, and Yo Goody (among quite a few others), you can enjoy your favorite activities with a cool treat in hand.  No matter where you spend your heat wave days in Kennebunkport, there are lots of great options for staying cool!

Summer Vacation at Maine Bed and Breakfasts

July 7th, 2013 by Judi Hauer

Maine bed and breakfasts will help you find gorgeous spots like this to visit!

Maine bed and breakfasts will help you find gorgeous spots like this to visit!

Now that July Fourth has come and gone, it is definitely summer vacation time, and there’s no better place than at Maine bed and breakfasts, which offer a combination of the amenities of high end hotels and the comforts of home. Now that doesn’t mean that you’re actually going to be in someone’s home – staying at a bed and breakfast doesn’t mean sleeping in Granny’s spare bedroom.  It is, however, distinctly different from a hotel.  Generally Maine bed and breakfasts are smaller in scale, so that means that the person checking you in is also likely to be serving your breakfast or making your theater reservations.  The staff is going to greet you by name and remember the restaurant where you had dinner last night.  When was the last time that happened at a Hilton?

While some people might envision the innkeepers at a B&B hovering or tucking you in at night (can you say creepy?), in reality, the staff is happy to be available as much or as little as you need us.  If you want help planning every second of your summer vacation, we’ve got lots of ideas!  But if you’d rather fly by the seat of your pants, we’re good with that too.  The truth is that everyone who works at Maine bed and breakfasts wants to make sure that you have the best possible vacation, so you might get an “Are you sure I can’t help you with…?” kind of question more often than you would at a hotel.  But on the quest to ensure that you have a great vay-cay, Maine bed and breakfasts try to think of everything – beach parking passes (for free!), beach towels, chairs, umbrellas, boogie boards, you name it.  But the best part, at least in my opinion, is waking up to a great breakfast!  No soda fountain OJ or miniature boxes of cereal here – you’re in for a multi-course gourmet delight.  And since we alternate daily between sweet and savory entrees, there’s something for  every palate.  I can’t remember the last time I was served a plated meal for free by a hotel – can you?  So this year, when planning your summer vacation, skip the vanilla and Maine bed and breakfasts!

Summer’s Heating Up in Kennebunkport Maine

July 6th, 2013 by Judi Hauer

A mini heat wave arrived in Kennebunkport Maine just in time for the July 4th holiday weekend, and while temps in the low 90s are a bit unusual in this neck of the woods, everyone seems to be enjoying a chance to hit the beach!  Fortunately, there’s lots of coastline to enjoy in southern Maine, and you don’t have to venture far from the Maine Stay Inn to find a spot that’s right for you.  In fact, we’re located just a block from the harbor! And that means we are treated to a fantastic afternoon breeze off the water every afternoon.  So after a day at the beach, you can put your feet up, relax in a hammock or just hang out on the front porch watching the horse drawn carriage go by and be cool as a cucumber!  Plus, we’ve always got refreshing cool beverages (like our signature fresh mint iced tea) each afternoon and some sweet freshly baked treats to give you that afternoon pick-me-up we all need.

High tide at the Wells Reserve!

High tide at the Wells Reserve!

This week I have been casually surveying visitors to find out where there favorite spots are to beat the heat in Kennebunkport Maine, and here’s what I’ve found:

  • Laudholm Farm at the Wells Reserve seems to be a favorite for those looking for peace and quite, as well as those looking to enjoy the ocean without baking in the sun.  They’ve got miles of trails that offer sun protection, but you can still hear, feel, smell, and often see the water.  Plus their quiet beach is very private and serene when you’re ready to frolic in the waves!
  • Gooch’s Beach, just over the bridge in Kennebunk, seems to be a walker’s paradise with paved walkways extending for over a mile.
  • Mother’s Beach is especially family-friendly, offering a more enclosed stretch of sand and a playground for the littlest visitors.
  • Colony Beach is the closest to our Kennebunkport Maine bed and breakfast (just about a half mile stroll from the inn) and the favorite of those looking to head out on foot.
  • The walk along Ocean Avenue and the Parsons Walk out by the Bush Family Compound is the top choice for people looking to enjoy the ocean without getting sandy.  You’re able to enjoy the ocean breeze and cooling mist all along this over two mile stretch, but you won’t feel the pressure to go for a dip if that’s not your thing.

But no matter where you spend the day (and many choose to explore multiple spots), you’ll always be happy to return for some R&R back at the Maine Stay. However you choose to spend your summer vacation in Kennebunkport Maine, you’re never far from the relaxing and refreshing Atlantic Ocean!

A Great Summer Day in Kennebunkport!

June 29th, 2013 by Judi Hauer

A gorgeous beach day in Kennebunkport!

A gorgeous beach day in Kennebunkport!

This morning I awoke to a thick fog that was like rain just suspended in mid air, but by the time breakfast was on the table, you could see the sun fighting to emerge from the clouds, and by early afternoon, Kennebunkport was experiencing a truly great summer day!  And what better way to celebrate than to play outdoors?  Well since I couldn’t think of any, I swung through Dock Square to take in the sights and see what others were doing to celebrate the amazing weather.  Sure, there was plenty of shopping and strolling, but there were lots of bikers, kayakers, and runners out and about as well.  Since I still just had to stretch my legs a bit more, I headed out to one of my absolute favorite places (and somewhere that is a must-see during your Maine summer vacation) – the Wells Reserve at Laudholm Farm.  Less than ten minutes from the Maine Stay Inn sits this special tract of land, a former farm encompassing over 1700 acres that has been converted into a nature and wildlife preserve.  As usual, the parking area was pretty empty, but I knew it wouldn’t stay that way for long, because strategically placed signs let me know that some lucky couple was going to be exchanging vows there that evening.  You could hear the soft musical stylings of a talented musical group and see the white chairs being set up in the field.  It was so picturesque!  And while I may have been inclined to oogle, I was on a mission to hit the beach!  So off I went on a leisurely stroll across the fields and into the woods.  Which brought me to my favorite bit of salt marsh.  Which brought me to the beach.  As usual, it was nothing short of spectacular!  Because of the curve of the shoreline, you can look across the water to Kennebunkport, and see St. Ann’s Church poking out into the Atlantic.  Relaxing to the sound of the waves what just what this gorgeous summer day called for, but as the evening breeze picked up, I decided to make the “hike” back and sneak one last peek at the beautiful wedding being held in the Laudholm Farmhouse tonight.  Yes, it sure was a great summer day in Kennebunkport!

Summer Solstice Approaching in Kennebunkport

June 20th, 2013 by Judi Hauer

Now that the summer solstice is just hours away, I thought I would reflect on some of my favorite things to do in Kennebunkport during the summer.  Granted there are about a million things to do in the area and countless places to eat, so this isn’t even close to

Nothing better than watching the boats go by in Kennebunkport!

Nothing better than watching the boats go by in Kennebunkport!

exhaustive, but these are the things I most look forward to during the summer months.  So here goes!

  • Picnic dinners on the water.  And while I am a food lover, it’s not the cuisine that matters, because let’s face it – everything tastes better in the ocean air!  But since Kennebunkport Maine is known for its lobster, I am certainly partial to the idea of a lobster dinner!  So if I was hankering for lobsters with all the fixin’s, I would head out to Cape Pier Chowder House and enjoy a meal overlooking Cape Porpoise Harbor and the sun setting over the moored lobster boats.  But what I really love is grabbing snacks and sides from Cape Porpoise kitchen and picking up a boiled lobster from Port Lobster, which is a perfect stop between the Maine Stay Inn and Colony beach.  Plus, with a jetty sticking out into the Atlantic, there’s no better spot to enjoy a sunset picnic without worrying about sand getting in your food or bugs “bugging” you!
  • Riding bikes through Kennebunkport.  Cruising through the historic district and waterfront streets is always beautiful, but sometimes I’m in the mood for a longer ride, so I’ll head out to Goose Rocks Beach (don’t forget your water bottle!) and enjoy some time on the beach.  But I have to admit, I always have an ulterior motive when heading that direction – Goose Rocks Dairy, a family run ice cream shop with incredible homemade ice creams.  And with such generous portions, a bike ride is a great excuse for some sustenance!
  • Water sports of any kind – seriously.  Whether it’s surfing, stand up paddle boarding, wake boarding, kayaking or canoeing, I am all in!  And if you’re game for something a little more leisurely, you can pick up a spectacular sailboat ride on the Schooner Eleanor just down the street from our Kennebunkport bed and breakfast.
  • Fun in the sun!  I love the beach as the next person, and there’s nothing better than a leisurely day on the beach.  Unlike some vacation destinations, visiting the beach is a breeze (especially with the complimentary parking passes we provide!), with no schlepping required since your parking spot is just steps from the sand.  But the protected beach at the Wells Reserve is one of the area’s hidden gems, so while you’re in for a bit of a stroll, you’ll find yourself on a nearly deserted beach.  And what could be better than that?
  • Breakfast on the porch, of course!  Sometimes referred to as the front porch of Kennebunkport, you can enjoy gourmet breakfast served on our wraparound porch, and watching the horse drawn carriage go by with a cup of coffee in hand is my favorite way to start the day.

Now that the Summer Solstice is upon us, that means loads of daylight to enjoy your favorite summer past times in Kennebunkport.  So whether you’re into dining and shopping or surfing and sailing, Kennebunkport has got the summer activities for you!

Summer Has Arrived in Kennebunkport Maine!

May 30th, 2013 by Judi Hauer

Thank goodness we decided to install the air conditioning units in our Kennebunkport Maine bed and breakfast this week, because we sure needed them today!  After some passing thunderstorms overnight last night, we all awoke to bright blue skies and warm temps.  And as the day progressed, the thermometer soared into the high 80s, sending folks flocking to the water.  Thank goodness it’s just a stone’s throw away!  But honestly, today was a reminder of just how glorious a Maine Summer Vacation is in Kennebunkport Maine.  So while we provide the beach towels, chairs, umbrellas, and even sand toys, the only decision you have to make is which of the awesome beaches you’re going to visit!  So to help you figure out which ones you want to hit during your visit to Kennebunkport Maine, here’s a recap of our faves:

Each of the Kennebunkport Maine beaches is perfect for your Maine Summer Vacation!

Each of the Kennebunkport Maine beaches is perfect for your Maine Summer Vacation!

  • Colony Beach is just about a half mile away, and while it’s a super short drive (although there isn’t oodles of parking), it’s definitely the place to go if you want to stroll to the beach.  Plus, since the Maine Stay Inn is just one block from the harbor, you can drink in the view and the beautiful boats during your walk.  So while it has just a short stretch of sand, Colony Beach also offers a beautiful jetty (hello, sunset viewing) and some of the craggy rocks that many think of when they imagine the Maine coastline.
  • Gooch’s Beach, just over the bridge in Kennebunk, is just a mile away (and an easy walk), but when you’re toting chairs, umbrellas, and coolers, most folks choose to drive.  And since our Kennebunkport Maine bed and breakfast provides parking passes to these beaches, you can park right alongside at no charge!  This super long stretch of sand is ideal for walking, relaxing, and even building sand castles, and since it has life guards on duty, it’s great for swimmers of all ages.
  • If you head a little further down Beach Avenue, you’ll hit Middle Beach, which tends to have the most parking options, and while it has just small sandy areas, it it primarily a rocky stretch, both with craggy rocks and smooth polished pebble regions.  This is my favorite spot for quite reading and reflection.
  • Continue around the bend and you’ll find Mother’s Beach, which is ideal for families.  With a deep sandy beach and bounded on both ends with rocky areas and a playground, it’s a spot that’s full of fun… and easy for parents to keep an eye on their little ones!
  • Looking for a little solitude?  Check out the beach at Laudholm Farm at the Wells Reserve.  While it’s a light “hike” down to the beach, you’ll find a secluded stretch that is sure to recharge the soul.
  • Goose Rocks Beach in the northern part of Kennebunkport Maine also offers a glorious crescent shaped beach.  It’s a great spot for collecting sand dollars and oogling at gorgeous beach houses – and you might even catch a glimpse of the rocks that look like geese on the water!

We’re expecting more of this steamy summer weather for the next few days, which means that you can hit up each of the amazing beaches in the area and still have time to explore the shops and restaurants in town.  The towels and beach chairs are ready, so just bring your sunscreen, because it is official – summer has arrived in Kennebunkport Maine!
