A Snow-Covered Maine Bed and Breakfast

snow covered maine bed and breakfast

A fresh blanketing of powder has fallen in Kennebunkport

A gentle snow fell throughout the afternoon and evening in Kennebunkport today, and on one of my many trips inside the house after shoveling, I caught a glimpse of the living room fire at our Maine bed and breakfast glowing.  So I began to hum,” Oh the weather outside is frightful, but the fire is so delightful” song  - and I know you are glad that I chose to hum and not sing!  Although the storm outside wasn’t exactly frightful, it certainly was beautiful, which means we are sure to wake up to a stunning sunrise with snow crystals reflecting the morning glow.  As usual, I have digressed… Anyhow, I suddenly began to realize that Christmas is over and New Year’s is less than two days away.  Where did the time go?!  It guess I had better get cracking on that menu for our New Year’s Eve celebration and brunch on the first!

This year, we were fortunate to have a slightly white Christmas – graced with a fresh dusting just to brighten scenery.  But then a storm on the 27th dumped oodles of snow on our Maine bed and breakfast!  A thick layer of snow finally blanketed the earth, but  a powerful rain shower just prior to the snowfall meant that plows and shovelers alike struggled with the weight of precipitation.  And just today we were graced with another several inches (including quite a few more than predicted) of snow.  This time, however, it was the picture-perfect powder that skiers just dream of!  And while the total count has yet to be determined, as the snow is still gently falling in Kennebunkport, the town looks like it has donned on its New Year’s finest, with a thick covering gently weighting the tree branches and ablaze with white Christmas lights.  Thank you, Mother Nature – it was about time for a good snowstorm!

Superstorm Sandy Spares Kennebunkport

October 30th, 2012 by Judi Hauer

Watching the news today, all of us at the Maine Stay Innhave realized just how lucky we are to have been spared by the wrath of Superstorm Sandy.  Along with all of coastal New England, we braced ourselves for a strong battering, expected to bring unprecedented winds and rain to the area, but as the storm’s path grew more certain, warnings eased in the Kennebunkport area,

kennebunkport coastline

You can bet the Kennebunkport coastline wasn’t looking quite this peaceful during Monday’s encounter with Superstorm Sandy!

and no mandatory evacuations were imposed, even in low-lying areas like Kennebunk Beach.  Forecasters predicted the winds to be worse than those experienced just over a year ago during Hurricane Irene, and they were right!  Last year, we took a walk along the beach to experience the sights of surf ferociously pounding the coastline, but this time, winds were so strong we hunkered down safely tucked inside our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast.  But if you want to see a hint of the surf we experienced before the height of the storm, you can check out the footage from local TV station, WMTW here.

But while the storm mostly downed tree limbs and ripped the remaining foliage from the branches, we escaped unscathed – with one small exception.  The top of one of our outdoor lamp posts blew off!  A thoughtful guest retrieved it for us, but, alas, it’s destined for the recycling.  The kiddos are really in luck – all these fallen leaves won’t be cleaned up before Trick Or Treating time tomorrow night, so it will really add to the spooky ambience of Halloween!  All kidding aside, though, Kennebunkport is so fortunate to have been spared from the destruction and severe flooding that other coastal areas in the Northeast are experiencing.  Our thoughts and prayers are with those who weren’t so lucky and are now facing the daunting task of cleaning up after the wake of Superstorm Sandy.

April Vacation Week in Kennebunkport Maine

A great day for the beach in Kennebunkport Maine!

While it’s only Patriot’s Day and April Vacation week, it feels like summertime has arrived in Kennebunkport Maine, with temps spiking into the 80s today.  And with more of the same expected tomorrow and incredible, but not quite so hot, weather continuing this week, it really feels more like summer vacation is upon us!  And looking around town and our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast, only two things seem to give it away that it’s really only April – the water is still super cold and there aren’t any leaves on the trees yet.  So while not too many are going for a swim, there are lots of great summer-like things to do around town this week.  Don’t worry, though, because if the surf is calling your name, we’ve still got lots of beach towels to dry you off!

In addition to the shopping and dining opportunities that exist all year long in Kennebunkport Maine and surrounding communities, there are oodles of great outdoor activities to occupy your visit this week.  But without any foliage to block the sun’s strong rays, be sure to remember lots of sunblock – sunburns hurt just as much now as they might in a few more months!  (And yes, that lesson was learned the hard way…)  This week many visitors are enjoying walks and picnics along the Kennebunk beaches, which tops the charts for length and convenience.  Plus, it’s just a two minute drive from our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast.  Others seem to be hankering to dust off the hiking boots and really get in touch with nature, so Wells Reserve/Laudholm Farm is attracting lots of attention.  And with its ever-popular beach trail, you can get your fill of sand, sun, and streams all in one place.  But many visitors to Kennebunkport Maine are just celebrating this glorious stretch by relaxing in our very own backyard, enjoying our just-power washed assortment of comfy lawn furniture.  So whether you’re on va-cay or just looking to play some hooky, Kennebunkport’s calling your name – come play!
