Holiday Shopping in Kennebunkport Maine

November 18th, 2013 by Judi Hauer

Honeymoon (105)

Check out the unique shops in Kennebunkport’s Dock Square!

Kennebunkport Maine is often known for its assortment of fine shops, and that means that it’s a prime location to get some holiday shopping done!  All of us at the Maine Stay Inn are feel so lucky to have such a great spot for retail therapy just steps away.  And unlike many vacation destinations, Dock Square is not overrun with T-shirt shops and souvenir stands.  Instead, you’ll find incredible art galleries, chic boutiques, and fine crafts with products from many local craftsmen.  No, you’re not going to find the Gap or an H&M, but the products sold in Kennebunkport Maine really reflect the character of New England and the uniqueness of the area.  Now, if more mainstream stores are what you’re searching for, don’t worry!  There are two world-class outlet centers not far from our Kennebunkport bed and breakfast.  Heading to our south, you’ll find the Kittery Outlets by Tanger, with more stores and brands than I could ever imagine!  Frankly, the only downside I see here is that this outlet center is in a strip mall kind of set up, which means that walking or driving between cluster isn’t the most exciting or inspiring of events.  That said, whatever Christmas shopping you can’t get done in Kennebunkport you can definitely cross off the list here.  Or you could head north to the Freeport Outlets, with LLBean as the crown jewel of this shopping area.  And while they don’t have quite as many stores as you might find in Freeport, you’ll experience a very pleasant small town feel while enjoying all the  benefits of a huge shopping complex.  And if you’ve got the bug to hit up LLBean at 2 am just because you can, this is definitely the place to go.  But no matter which direction you head or if you stay right in town, you’re sure to enjoy your holiday preparation this year when shopping in Kennebunkport Maine!

Celebrating Thanksgiving in Kennebunkport Maine

November 14th, 2013 by Judi Hauer

I may be a little bit biased, but celebrating Thanksgiving in Kennebunkport Maine is always a really special time of year, and I certainly think our turkey day visitors agree!  One of my favorite things about Thanksgiving is getting to watch Kennebunkport prepare itself for Christmas Prelude.  I am particularly excited this year, because a recent cold snap has made it feel a lot more like the holiday season, and many of the leaves are off the trees,

We're looking forward to seeing the town get all decked out for the holidays!

which means it will look a lot less silly when folks start stringing lights on their trees and shrubs.

As you may know, I am a teeny bit partial to Kennebunkport Maine at Thanksgiving, because it marked my very first introduction to this amazing town.  It seems like ages ago that I crossed that green bridge into Kennebunkport while checking out colleges during high school, and I never would have guessed that this place would become my home.  Man, was I lucky that my parents chose to visit a Kennebunkport bed and breakfast on our trip!  And while I didn’t end up attending a Maine college, we enjoyed our first Thanksgiving here so much that we visited again the following year.  It was the perfect opportunity to relax!  We sat by a gently glowing fire, reading books and playing games, enjoyed scenic walks along the ocean (yes, it is beautiful even when the weather is a bit brisk), and perused the incredible shopping opportunities in town.  And, I must admit, we even hit up the outlet shops to knock off some Christmas shopping.  So this year, whether you’re joining us solo, sans family, or with the whole clan in tow, you’re sure to enjoy a real getaway.  And best of all, you can enjoy an amazing Thanksgiving meal without any of the work!  As usual, there are lots of incredible restaurants waiting to dish up an old fashioned turkey dinner with all the fixins or something Maine inspired (lobster, anyone?), and we’re happy to help you pick one that’s right for you.  We’re looking forward to a wonderful Thanksgiving in Kennebunkport Maine and hope that you are too!

Maine Bed and Breakfast Honors Veterans

This statue honors the military service of George H.W. Bush.

Many people are looking forward to celebrating Veteran’s Day tomorrow, and while it’s easy to forget the reason why we have an extra day off from work or school, our Maine bed and breakfast is taking the opportunity to honor our nation’s veterans.  Unlike Memorial Day, which honors fallen veterans, most communities don’t celebrate with a parade or armed salute in a local cemetery, so we can sometimes forget what this holiday is all about.  We’re expressing our gratitude for those who have served our country by offering select rooms to active and retired members of the US military at no charge.  This is our fourth year participating in the BnBs for Vets program, and we’re really excited to welcome these national heroes to our Maine bed and breakfast tomorrow!  Last year, I took a walk our to the Bush family compound along Parson’s Way, heading out from the Maine Stay Inn along Ocean Avenue.  It was an absolutely gorgeous day, and I hope that tomorrow is just as beautiful.  I rounded the corner by St. Ann’s Episcopal Church, just to glimpse an American flag flying over the Atlantic in a cloudless sky.   flagpole flying in the essentially cloudless sky. Just about two miles from my start at our Maine Bed and Breakfast, I reached a scenic precipice overlooking the Bush Compound, where a monument honors George H.W. Bush’s military service.  Not only that, it honors the service of all veterans, and how better to celebrate Veteran’s Day than by stumbling upon this?  It was so serendipitous, but I certainly plan on doing the same this year.  Needless to say, Veterans Day 2012 was a great one in Kennebunkport Maine, and I am hoping tomorrow is just as great – no matter where or how you celebrate!

Christmas Prelude 2013 is Coming to Kennebunkport!

November 8th, 2013 by Judi Hauer

kennebunkport tree.

It’s hard to believe, but Christmas Prelude 2013 is well on its way to Kennebunkport!  In fact, it’s less than 30 days away now!  And even though Christmas decorations showed up in the stores promptly on November 1, I can’t quite wrap my head around it being “the Holidays” while there are still leaves on some of the trees.  But the weather is getting much cooler, and the air is getting that crisp, late fall feeling, which means… winter’s not far behind!  So get ready for getting in the holiday spirit with a trip to the nation’s second best Christmas festival, Christmas Prelude in Kennebunkport Maine!  All of us at the Maine Stay Inn feel so lucky to get to experience this incredible event each year from our location just a few short blocks from the heart of the action.  We’re looking forward to Christmas Prelude 2013 and can’t wait to celebrate with you in Kennebunkport!

Gearing Up for Labor Day Weekend in Kennebunkport

August 25th, 2013 by Judi Hauer

Kennebunkport is looking mighty pretty for Labor Day!

Kennebunkport is looking mighty pretty for Labor Day!

It seems almost impossible that Labor Day Weekend is already upon us, but it certainly is and Kennebunkport is gearing up for a great weekend. This three day weekend is always filled with fun activities and ample opportunities to unwind and relax. Plus, with great back to school sales at the shops in Dock Square, you’ll surely get in some retail therapy that is great on the wallet!  And since the stores in the area are known for their unique and hard to find items, you can be sure the person next door won’t be sporting the same purchases.  Now I am not a huge shopper myself, but one of my absolute favorite things is the School Around Us Craft Fair.  Held on the Kennebunkport town green just around the corner from the Maine Stay Inn, you’ll find great locally prepared foods, musical performances, and, of course, incredible hand made wares.

We’ve been working on some projects all around the inn lately to make sure that your Labor Day Weekend getaway to Kennebunkport is absolutely the best it can be.  And while we are content to offer breakfast and afternoon tea to guests, we are always happy to offer suggestions for area restaurants.  Now that even the newest eateries have been open for quite a few months, each and every one of them is operating at their peak, so we know that you’ll enjoy delicious meals at any of them!  We know, though, that not everyone is obsessed with food or shopping, and fortunately the plethora of amazing outdoor activities in Kennebunkport are incredible.  So whether you head to the beach for a stroll and some fun in the sun or to a local nature and wildlife refuge you will definitely enjoy the beauty of the Maine coast.  No matter what you choose to do to celebrate Labor Day Weekend in Kennebunkport, you’re in for a fun and relaxing escape!

Fireworks on the Fourth in Kennebunkport Maine

Check out the fireworks from the Kennebunk/Kennebunkport Maine jetties!

Check out the fireworks from the Kennebunk/Kennebunkport Maine jetties!

It’s hard to believe that July Fourth is upon us, but that means that we will get to enjoy fireworks commemorating Independence Day in Kennebunkport Maine!  There aren’t too many small towns in New England (or anywhere in the country, for that matter) that are lucky enough to enjoy fireworks displays as large or involved as ours, and boy, are we ever lucky!  And considering our seaside location and undulating coastline, there are lots of great spots to enjoy the show.  While I think the best way enjoy the Fourth festivities are found on foot, any of the viewing spots are also accessible by car – as long as you’re willing to wait a little while to get your buggy back to the Maine Stay Inn.  Since the fireworks are shot off from Narragansett Point between Gooch’s and Middle beaches, the Kennebunk beaches are a great place to watch the Kennebunkport Maine fireworks.  Plus, you’ll get the full experience because you’ll even smell the gunpowder (one of my favorite aspects to a July Fourth fireworks display)!  But if you’d rather stay a little farther away, you can pick a spot on the jetty overlooking Gooch’s Beach.  Any of the peaceful outcroppings of rock along Ocean Avenue are also great locations to watch the fireworks, but my absolute favorite spot is the jetty popping out from Colony beach.  Just about a half mile from our Kennebunkport Maine bed and breakfast, it gives you a chance for a leisurely after dinner stroll before the show.  Best of all, you can stop at the ice cream window of Mabel’s Lobster Claw for a delicious treat on your way!  But one of my favorite things about watching the fireworks in town is that you’ll also see the York and Ogunquit firework shows in the distance – it’s like getting three shows in one.  Wishing everyone in Kennebunkport Maine and across the country a happy fourth of July!

Kennebunkport Hotels and B&Bs Gear Up for July 4th!

July 1st, 2013 by Judi Hauer

Our flag will be flying high on July 4th!

Our flag will be flying high on July 4th!

Summer is in the air and all around town you can feel the excitement gearing up for July 4th, and the Kennebunkport hotels and bed and breakfasts are certainly no exception!  To show our patriotism and our sense of celebration, everyone is encouraged to dress their best in red, white, and blue this Thursday.  And with our flags out and flying proudly, we’re excited to celebrate our nation’s Independence Day!  Plus, since it falls on a Thursday, that means that most folks will be enjoying a long weekend, and will be just that much more relaxed when visiting Kennebunkport.  We’re also looking forward to taking our red, white, and blue theme a bit farther – right into the kitchen!  And unlike the Kennebunkport hotels, the Maine Stay Inn will be serving its gourmet breakfast with an infusion of patriotic colors, but I am not about to spoil the surprise by leaking hints about the menu – you’ll just have to wait for updates on that!  But if you’re really itching for some inspiration, you can check out our Facebook page on the morning of the 4th to see a snapshot of this year’s tasty treats.

Now, what would the fourth of July be without incredible fireworks?  Well, I’m not sure I’d want to know, and fortunately for us and for visitors to Kennebunkport, there is always a fantastic show right off the Kennebunk beaches.  And with a viewing spot on Colony beach (named for its location just across the street from the Kennebunkport hotels property) or out on the jetty, you can enjoy the sights, while simultaneously catching a glimpse of the Ogunquit and York fireworks in the distance.  Obviously I know which ones I prefer!  I have to admit, though, the reason that I am partial to this spot.  Yes, it’s a just a short walk from the Maine Stay, which means that you don’t have to fight the post-show gridlock (basically the only time we see traffic in this town!), but it’s perfectly situated so you can grab a cup or cone of your favorite ice cream at Mabel’s ice cream window before staking claim on your viewing spot.  Mmmm!  No matter where you choose to view the fireworks in town this weekend, it’s clear that at the Kennebunkport hotels and B&Bs are getting excited for July 4th!

Happy Father’s Day from Kennebunkport Maine!

A special Father's Day surprise for Walter!

A special Father’s Day surprise for Walter!

Father’s Day weekend brought lots of sunshine to Kennebunkport Maine, which was a great way for Mother Nature to honor dads everywhere, and we were excited to host some incredible dads this weekend.  Because the weather was so incredible, most decided to spend lots of time outside, except, of course, when the Sox and Bruins were playing!  While some dads decided to hit the beach for some fun in the sun (and quite a few forgot their sunscreen!), others decided to do some different things, and heading out for a bike ride was one of this weekend’s top activities.  Some folks decided to rent bikes and cruise through town and along the beach, while others bought their own and headed out to explore the Eastern Trail, which stretches from Kittery to Portland.  Although, I must admit, none were up to traverse that whole distance this weekend!  The Schooner Eleanor hosted quite a few proud fathers this weekend on a glorious and peaceful sail around the Kennebunkport Maine coastline.  And while golfing is typically a big draw on Father’s Day Weekend, it seems like this year many were just happy to relax in the backyard with their families.  Yes, the hammocks got a workout this weekend!  Now, I have to mention that while my dad and I spent lots of quality time together working on the gardens at the Maine Stay Inn, I somehow managed to pull off a special little surprise – a raised garden bed just for Walter’s tomatoes!  Some of you might remember that Walter’s tomato plants are like his babies, but a few years ago, after sneaking plants into almost every flower bed and planter throughout the property, he failed to produce a single red tomato.  So since we never want that to happen again, it’s time that his plants have their very own turf!  And while I really enjoyed spending some quality time with dear old Dad (and still managed to pull off a little surprise), it was just as much fun watching fathers spend time with their families here in Kennebunkport Maine.  It was clear to me that newbie and veteran dads alike enjoyed the chance to kick back and enjoy their families without any of the worries or stresses that come with everyday life, and we were honored to treat some dads to breakfast in bed (it’s not just for moms, you know!) and delicious treats in the afternoon and just help make their weekend extra special.  So Happy Father’s Day, Dads, from all of us in Kennebunkport Maine!

A Father’s Day Getaway to Kennebunkport

June 12th, 2013 by Judi Hauer

A Father's Day trip to the beach!

A Father’s Day trip to the beach!

It’s hard to believe that Father’s Day is already upon us, but Kennebunkport is gearing up to treat the dads in your life to an awesome getaway!  Now, when it comes to Mother’s Day, we’re thinking about treating Mom to lots of flowers and chocolate, some retail therapy, relaxing spa treatments, and breakfast in bed, but at least in my family, that’s not exactly what Dad is hankering for.  With one exception – breakfast!  I mean, who doesn’t love to start the day with a gourmet meal that doesn’t require you lift a finger?  So whether you choose breakfast delivered to your suite or your morning meal at a private table on our wraparound porch, Dad will be in for a delicious treat!  And while the Kennebunkport shopping options are pretty incredible, they’re usually not at the top of Dad’s Father’s Day getaway list.  A round of golf at one of the area’s scenic courses, though, is usually right up there.  So after a few holes at the Cape Arundel or Webhannet Golf clubs, lunch is usually on the agenda, and fortunately you won’t go wrong at any of the Kennebunkport restaurants!

So whether Dad wants to hit the beach or go for a bike ride or nearly anything else he can imagine, we’ve got it covered!  But sometimes a guy’s just gotta recharge, so the men in your life might be game for a tour of the local brewery and quick nap – my dad sure would be!  And male or female, everyone loves to enjoy a delectable dinner on the ocean before tucking in for the night at our Kennebunkport bed and breakfast.  No matter what the dads in your life enjoy doing in their free time, Kennebunkport is sure to be a hit for a special Father’s Day Getaway, and we look forward to helping make his trip a little extra special!

Celebrating Memorial Day Weekend in Kennebunkport Maine!

May 22nd, 2013 by Judi Hauer

It’s hard to believe that Memorial Day Weekend is finally here, and that means that summer has arrived in Kennebunkport Maine!  We have spent the past few weeks refurbishing the front porch, and now that the tables and chairs and lounging furniture is out, we’re ready to celebrate.  So this Memorial Day Weekend, you can enjoy our gourmet breakfast on the wraparound porch, relax with some fresh iced

tea, or simply sit back and watch the horse drawn carriages pass by.  And Kennebunkport Maine is certainly a great place to enjoy some much needed rest and relaxation – I mean, what could be better than the soothing sound of the ocean?  But many also enjoy Memorial Day Weekend as a time to get out and about, take part in fun outdoor activities, and indulge in lots of yummy food.  Guess what?  Kennebunkport’s got everything you need!  It’s a great time to consider renting bikes or kayaks and to enjoy a different view of town or check out one of the countless nature preserves in the area.  And while most shops, galleries, and restaurants have been open for ages, the last few doors are finally wide open.  That means it’s prime retail therapy time!  But you do have to take a break from whatever your daily activities entail, and there’s no better way than with a frosty treat.  Fortunately for Kennebunkport Maine, there are more than a few ice cream/frozen yogurt shops within easy walking distance of the Maine Stay Inn.  Last spring a great new Artisan Ice Cream shop, Rococo, emerged with its gourmet twist on an old fashioned favorite, while just down the street, Yo Goody’s offers a stunning array of yogurt options.  But traditionalists, don’t despair – there are great options for your favorite flavors of that cool, creamy confection.  And with restaurants abounding you’ll find something for every appetite, but if you can’t enjoy a holiday weekend without firing up the grill, you’re welcome to bring your favorite ingredients and fire ‘em up in the back yard.  Now, no Memorial Day weekend would be complete without a parade, and we certainly won’t let you down – just make sure not to miss it on Monday!  Whatever you prefer to complete your Memorial Day Weekend, you’re sure to find it in Kennebunkport Maine!
