Easter and Passover at a Maine Bed and Breakfast

April 14th, 2014 by Judi Hauer

Not only is spring finally here, but it is also one of the few times of year when two major faiths are celebrating holidays – Passover and Easter – and we think that there’s no better place to enjoy the festivities than at a Maine bed and breakfast!  That means that millions of people around the world are celebrating (not to mention enjoying amazing edible confections!), and millions of folks up and down the East Coast are celebrating the

revival of the landscape.  And despite the fact that Kennebunkport is a small village, there are churches of all denominations in town and nearby communities, as well as a synagogue just a few miles away in Biddeford, so no matter your faith, there are plenty of opportunities to observe, if you so choose.  If you’re at all like me, though, the thing you look forward to most is enjoying some great meals, and fortunately, most restaurants will be in full force on Easter Sunday.  So let us know what kind of atmosphere you’re looking for while enjoying Easter dinner, and we’d be happy to make suggestions and reservations for you.  Not ready to commit to an elegant supper or set reservation time?  Don’t worry!  Great staples like Federal Jack’s and Alisson’s Restaurant are serving just a short stroll from our Maine bed and breakfast.

No matter your religious preferences, many folks have dietary restrictions at some point throughout the year, and we’re happy to accommodate your needs in any way possible.  So if you’re fasting during the day and need breakfast before sunrise or need to head out for early services, we’re happy to deliver a cold breakfast the night before for you to enjoy whenever you like.  And if you can’t eat leavened products, grains, or animal products, we’ll happily oblige, just be sure to give us a little warning, so we can prepare a tasty breakfast that meets your needs.  We want to make your experience at our Maine bed and breakfast a great one, during Passover, Easter, and throughout the year!

St. Patrick’s Day in Kennebunkport Maine

Gearing up for some Irish-style St. Patrick’s Day fun in Kennebunkport Maine!

I’m not exactly sure where February went, but St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner, and fortunately there are great places to enjoy the luck of the Irish in Kennebunkport Maine.  Right in Lower Village, you’ll find Ryan’s Corner House, within an easy walk from the Maine Stay Inn. This authentic Irish pub opened just two years ago, just in time for St. Paddy’s Day, and has quickly become a local favorite.  In addition to some amazing brews, they offer fantastic Irish fare, as well as some more conventionally American options, just in case.  But who can resist an amazing corned beef and cabbage right about now?  But if you’re exploring southern Maine, you can check out their new location a few towns south in Ogunquit.  It’s the perfect spot for a warm-up after a winter walk along the Marginal Way!

But Kennebunkport Maine is lucky to have another great option for St. Patrick’s Day pub crawling – which really is just lingering over indulgent meals for me!  A few minutes up the road on Route 1 is Feile Restaurant and Pub, which also offers great music and entertainment.  We’re so lucky to have three great places to enjoy authentic Irish food and beverages for this holiday (and throughout the year), but now we’re busy turning our attention to crafting a fun, festive, and delicious menu for St. Patrick’s Day.  And though you won’t be finding any live four leaf clovers growing in local fields or lawns quite yet, the plethora of conservation land trusts have lots of trails that are ripe for exploring! So before you tuck into that plate of bangers and mash or put away that pint of Guinness, check out Laudholm Farm at the Wells Reserve, Rachel Carson Wildlife Refuge, the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust, or the Kennebunk Land Trust for some fresh air!  I don’t know about you, but I am definitely getting excited about St. Patrick’s Day in Kennebunkport Maine!

Planning Your Valentine’s Getaway to Kennebunkport Maine

Now that MLK weekend has passed, it really seems that love is in the air, and Kennebunkport Maine is no exception.  This morning’s brief dusting of snow gave way to bright blue skies, and despite the chilly temps, it was one of those days that was just perfect for a romantic Valentine’s Getaway.  The sun was shining, the snow glittered on the bare tree branches, and the sunlight sparkled on the ocean waves.  Downtown Kennebunkport Maine looked especially charming, and the shops were primed for browsing – and warming up during an outdoor stroll.  With Valentine’s Day around the corner, it really is time to plan that romantic getaway for you and your special someone.  And snow bunny or not, a Kennebunkport Maine bed and breakfast, like the Maine Stay Inn, is a perfect place for your intimate escape!  With gourmet breakfast, yummy afternoon snacks, and hosts dedicated to making sure your stay goes without a hitch in a seaside village known for its world class dining and great shopping opportunities, what more could you need!  Consider a room or suite in the main house, a historic Kennebunkport inn, and savor gourmet breakfast served to you in our Victorian dining room.  Or, for the option of breakfast in bed, choose one of the Cottage Suites for breakfast delivered to your door.  Yes, I mean room service!  Having steaming, gourmet breakfast delivered to your door is a little out of the ordinary for a Maine bed and breakfast, but we like to do things that are out of the ordinary.  You’ll get the same delicious meal served in dining room, but in the privacy of your suite!

To make your Valentine’s getaway extra-special, consider indulging in a spa treatment at one of the area day spas like Cottage Breeze Day Spa.  It’s close enough that you could walk, but after indulging in a relaxing massage or facial, I would sure be anxious to hop back in bed to lounge by the fire as soon as possible.  And since they’ve got parking, that’s definitely the way to go.  If that’s not your cup of tea or coffee, think about something every girl loves – chocolate.  The Romance Package is perfect for snuggling up with your special someone for a romantic (and tasty!) weekend. Enjoy homemade dessert and a fruit and cheese plate delivered to your door OR choose a fruit and cheese plate with sparkling cider and flutes.  So this Valentine’s Day, surprise your other half with a romantic getaway to Kennebunkport Maine.

Getting Ready for New Year’s Eve in Kennebunkport!

Looking forward to watching the New Year’s Eve ball drop from Kennebunkport

After a bit of relaxation time over the Christmas holiday, we’ve returned with renewed vigor to start preparing to ring in the new year in Kennebunkport.  While some people choose to enjoy dinners out, many guests decide to enjoy the festivities right inside the Maine Stay Inn with our annual New Year’s Eve party.  What started years ago as a way for innkeepers, staff, local friends, and of course any guests in a low key evening, has become so much more and I am just bubbling with anticipation for tomorrow night!  No, you won’t find a formal, sit-down dinner here – just loads and loads of fresh and delicious noshes to keep everyone chugging well past midnight.  And while the celebration always starts as a laid back evening, we always undoubtedly transition into an assortment of fun group games.  It might not seem possible, but the merriment has almost caused us to miss the ball dropping two years in a row!  This year, I’m setting an alarm clock!  Not everyone lasts until the clock strikes 12, but I am always impressed with the crowd that gathers just in time to watch that Swarovski crystal globe light up.  Now we keep with beverages comin’ with the non-alcoholic variety, but anyone and everyone is welcome to bring their favorite adult beverage to toast the New Year.  Otherwise they’ll be clinking glasses with sparkling apple cider with me – because I’ve got to make sure that New Year’s day brunch goes off without a hitch!  So let the countdown to 2014 begin, because we in Kennebunkport are eagerly awaiting our New Year’s Eve party!

A Christmas Snowstorm in Kennebunkport Maine

December 26th, 2013 by Judi Hauer

IMG_1267_2‘Twas the night after Christmas and all through Kennebunkport, not a creature was stirring… well, no one but the plow drivers!  While there was plenty of the white stuff on the ground on the morning of December 25, it certainly wasn’t the fresh beautiful powder that fell this afternoon.  And, boy, was it beautiful!  Kennebunkport Maine was quiet as people snuggled inside, spending time with their friends and loved ones.  But now that Christmas has come and gone, we at the Maine Stay Inn are gearing up for our New Year’s Eve celebration.  It’s one of our most favorite holidays, because it means that we get to spend all evening socializing, playing great games, and watching the ball drop with lots of friends (new and old) over tons of delicious nibbles.  And my personal favorite, is waking up (a little bit later, of course!) to our three course brunch!  But you’ll just have to wait for a New Year’s Day update, because I’m not spilling any secrets on the menu.  We’re sending our wishes for a happy and healthy holiday season from all of us in Kennebunkport Maine.

Give a Getaway This Holiday Season

December 17th, 2013 by Judi Hauer

For families around the globe, December can be a big gift-giving month – and not just for Christmas!  Both of my parents celebrate birthdays this month, as well as an anniversary at the end of November, and that’s not so unusual, it seems, because we’ve had lots of couples visiting the Maine Stay Inn

Our Holiday gift certificate sale is back!

recently celebrating birthdays and anniversaries during their stay.  I suppose if you think about it, there are probably just as many people born during December as during any other month (except February with its measly 28 – or 29 – days), so chances are good that someone you know has a birthday between Thanksgiving and New Years.  And truthfully, I think these visitors were really onto something– giving the gift of a getaway – because I for one know that it can really be tough to come up with a thoughtful and creative present for not one, but two special days.

But remember, for the next few days you can take advantage of our annual Gift Certificate sale and cash in on some steep savings for your getaway to a Maine Bed and Breakfast.  Plus, since you’re giving a gift certificate, that special someone in your life can use if for a winter weekend, a fun summer vacation, or just a night away from the kids.  And best of all, there’s no wrapping involved, because our gift certificates come printed and customized just for you!

Christmas Prelude 2013 is Underway in Kennebunkport Maine!

December 7th, 2013 by Judi Hauer

christmas prelude

It sure is quite a tree we’ve got for Christmas Prelude in Kennebunkport Maine!

Kennebunkport Maine is alive with Christmas Prelude festivities, and tonight is no exception! Now that the tree is lit with its signature lobster topper, town looks particularly beautiful.  That said, this time of year is always especially cheerful, with Christmas garlands lining the downtown area and historic district, and historic homes (including our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast) are sparkling with their Christmas lights.

Today’s activities featured a multitude of craft fairs, shopping extravaganzas, art shows, and musical events.  But for the eighth straight year, people have dropped everything to stand by the road in Dock Square for the Crazy Hat Parade.  Crowds lined the street (akin to a miniature version of Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade) while several hundred enthusiastic folks donned on the most ridiculous costumes and hats you could imagine.  Laughter and cheering followed each group, and children were rewarded for their patience and cooperation with candy canes!

The incredible array of activities continue throughout tomorrow, but if you didn’t make it this weekend there is still next weekend for Prelude Round 2!  And if you can’t find your schedule of events for Christmas Prelude 2013, you can visit the website for more information. And, of course, we have lots of schedules and reading materials at the Maine Stay Inn.  But now it’s time to hit the sack, because there is so much more Christmas Prelude 2013 to enjoy tomorrow in Kennebunkport Maine!

Looking Forward to Thanksgiving in Kennebunkport Maine

November 27th, 2013 by Judi Hauer

We may not be covered in snow, but Kennebunkport sure is beautiful this Thanksgiving!

We may not be covered in snow, but Kennebunkport sure is beautiful this Thanksgiving!

It’s hard to believe that I first set foot in Kennebunkport Maine 11 years ago today, during a family Thanksgiving getaway.  Much like it is today, the town was aglow with Christmas lights and garlands adorning the Kennebunk River bridge and the lamp posts around town.  But there is one striking difference – it was covered in snow!  And despite today’s wind and steady rain, temps topped the 60 degree mark.  Too bad it wasn’t sunny, right?  That would have called for a full on beach day (kidding… kind of).  I remember breaking out my boots and going for a stroll along the street of the Kennebunkport Maine historic district, admiring the beautiful Christmas decorations and incredible historic architecture.

Despite being away from home, my family celebrated Thanksgiving together, around a table in one of the many incredible restaurants, feasting until we couldn’t manage another bite.  Sounds about right, no matter whether you’re home or away!  And in the evening, after most restaurants have finished their Thanksgiving supper service, my family and I gathered around a table with other visitors to Kennebunkport during the holiday.  It was a tradition we loved, and one that we’ve continued as innkeepers of a Kennebunkport Maine bed and breakfast.  So tomorrow evening, we’re looking forward to joining family and friends (new and old) for some delicious light fare around our dining room table.  A Kennebunkport Maine Thanksgiving quickly became our family tradition, and we look forward sharing this special day with so many others – Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
