Now that the Kennebunkport Festival is underway, a group of Kennebunkport bed and breakfasts are busy preparing for this weekend’s Garden Party.  Tomorrow, guests of any of the Historic Inns of Kennebunkport can enjoy complimentary limo service from inn to inn.  They’ll get an opportunity to explore each of the very unique properties while socializing with other visitors to the area.  Plus, at each of these Kennebunkport bed and breakfasts, they will find refreshing beverages (both adult and otherwise, depending on the location and predetermined menu) and a selection of delectable treats!  At the Maine Stay Inn, visitors will be treated to a true Maine classic – the whoopie pie.  And while we’re serving the traditional devil’s food cake with fluffy marshmallowy filling, we will also be serving “reverse” whoopies with tender golden cake and an ultra-rich chocolate buttercream, and a third variety that will just have to be a surprise!  For the past few weeks, we’ve had many testing sessions and competitions judged by our guests to help select their favorites, and it’s taken all of my willpower to not joke about “making whoopie” – but tonight and tomorrow morning will be filled with making whoopie…pies, that is!

Last year’s Garden Party was a phenomenal success, and serenaded by the musical stylings from the Kennebunkport Festival‘s Brews and Tunes held on the town green just a block away, do all of the participating Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfasts are thrilled to bring it back this year!  Plus, it’s a great opportunity to enjoy some of the offerings of the Kennebunkport Festival without committing to any of the high ticket events.  But as an aside, food and wine lovers who frequent festivals like this one know that the schedule of events provides an intimate setting for incredible selections of culinary creations and locally crafted spirits.  Stay tuned for an update on the Kennebunkport Festival and the Garden Party hosted by the Kennebunkport bed and breakfasts!

A Look Back on Historic Inns of Kennebunkport Events in 2012

January 12th, 2013 by Judi Hauer

It’s about that time of year when the innkeepers of the Historic Inns of Kennebunkport gather to look back on the joint events we held in the previous year and put together a plan for the coming year’s functions.  And I can honestly say that there wasn’t a single gathering that wasn’t a blast!  So that’s where you come in – we’d all love feedback on your favorites and what sounds like the most fun to you!

During the month of February, the Historic Inns of Kennebunkport, along with the restaurants, shops and galleries have created “February is For Lovers,” a month-long celebration of romance in the area.  And while there are no specific dates or parties, all of

us team up to inject romance into your stay all month long!  And in March we had events up the wazoo.  Despite warm winter weather, we held our annual maple syrup weekend with tours of a syrup farm and maple infused recipes.  A few weeks later, we held our annual cookie tour – a traveling open house of all of the Historic Inns featuring each property’s signature cookies.  At the Maine Stay Inn, we offered our incredible chocolate chip delights, as well as gluten-free dairy-free treats to cater to food-allergy afflicted visitors (but they were so delicious that everyone chose to indulge as well!).  Several of the inns, the Maine Stay included, are also part of a group of select bed and breakfasts called Select Registry, and this group produced a progressive dinner.  As guests from all the inns migrated from inn to inn, they enjoyed complimentary soups, salads, desserts, and and an assortment of beverages and small nibbles while socializing with other visitors.  Such fun!

Later in the spring, we held a traveling Garden Party that coincided with the Kennebunkport Festival, a celebration of fine food, fine wine, and fine art.  Guests enjoyed open houses at each property, hors d’oeuvres, sweet treats, an assortment of adult beverages, as well as specialty teas and refreshing drinks.  But, because we wanted everyone to indulge without worry, we provided complimentary limousine services between all of the Historic Inns of Kennebunkport.  And best of all, there was a live music performance being held on the town green that provided a great musical backdrop for many of the parties!

Fast forward a few months, and the group offered a great celebration during Veteran’s Day with food, drinks, and art displays available for all of our guests to enjoy.  Then, during Christmas Prelude, the Historic Inns of Kennebunkport held their annual charity open house – a festive afternoon activity with tasty nibbles at each property and a chance to tour each inn and a few guest rooms!  But this year, we brought back our new favorite event.  “A Walk to Bethlehem” reenacts Mary and Joseph’s search for an inn, featuring candle-lit caroling, selected readings, and, of course, a fun filled barn reception when the manger is finally found.  Barnyard animals and costumes make the experience extra special.

Phew!  The Historic Inns of Kennebunkport really have been busy in the past year, but now we need your help for suggestions for new events and whether we should make changes to any of our past favorites!

Historic Kennebunkport Inns Prepare For Garden Party

June 8th, 2012 by Judi Hauer

Tomorrow’s Garden Party is quickly approaching and a group of Historic Kennebunkport Inns are working ’round the clock (okay, maybe not quite!) to prepare for the parties!  And we’re no exception, which means that the gardens are groomed, the lawns mowed, and the kitchen is in high gear.  So tomorrow, instead of our traditional tea and warm, freshly baked cookies in the

afternoon, guests of the Maine Stay Inn can enjoy a teatime reminiscent of those across the pond and hop aboard a complimentary limo to explore the gardens and treats of other Historic Kennebunkport Inns.

But in case you can’t make it this weekend, I thought I would share a favorite recipe for lemon pound cake that is going to grace the tables tomorrow afternoon! So to make these at home, you’ll need:

  • 5 tablespoons softened butter
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 dash Kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon freshly grated lemon zest
  • 1 teaspoon pure lemon extract
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 2 eggs

In a mixing bowl, cream the sugar and butter until light and fluffy.  Then add the eggs, zest, and extract, and mix until fully blended.  Next, you’ll want to add half the milk and mix to combine, then add the dry ingredients.  Again, beat on low-medium until  combined, and finish by adding the last bit of milk.  Mix again.  Meanwhile, you’ll want to preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.  Once it’s preheated, coat two nonstick mini muffin tins with a non-stick spray or oil (not butter).  Using a mini ice cream scoop or melon baller, spoon batter into pans.  Bake about 10 minutes, or until edges are just browning and cakes are just set in the middle.  Remove from oven and invert onto rack (if you let them cool in the tins they will overcook – I learned the hard way).  Delectable by themselves, they are positively heavenly when topped with a dollop of fresh lemon curd!  Hope you enjoy this recipe and that the visitors to tomorrow’s Historic Kennebunkport Inns Garden Party do too!
