Picking a Maine Bed and Breakfast

July 23rd, 2012 by Judi Hauer

It sometimes seems like there are a gazillion inns in the great state of Maine, so selecting a Maine Bed and Breakfast for your vacation or quick getaway can be a daunting process.  Sure there are lots of travel blogs, review websites, and B&B listing sites, but where’s a person to start the search?  I decided to put on my traveler’s hat and figure out where to go!

Romantic Maine Bed and Breakfast

There’s no denying our 1860 roots!

First, it’s important to decide on what kind of setting you are looking for.  If you’re looking for mountains and cliffs, the Maine Stay Inn is probably not going to make the list for that particular visit.  And if you’re looking for rustic, we’re probably not going to meet you this time.  Beaches for fun in the sun?  Or a quintessential New England village?  We’ve got that covered!

Second, you’ve got to set the tone.  Sometimes your traveling companion(s) set the mood.  I mean, if you’re on a mother-daughter getaway, you’re probably not too concerned about having mood lighting or an oversized whirlpool tub.  And having two beds is usually not on the top of the list when you’re planning a romantic weekend.  Occasionally, though, there’s some overlap, and that’s when you’ve got to use you best judgement and dig a little deeper to find the perfect spot to meet everyone’s needs!  I mean, at our Maine Bed and Breakfast, we are fortunate to have rooms that work great for families and some indulgently romantic suites, but we also have rooms that offer some additional flexibility to travelers seeking to check off more than one box.

Finally, though, you have to pick a style that works for you – and that doesn’t mean just decor.  Yes, if you adore Victorian architecture and design, staying in a sleek modern place is probably not the best fit.  Or, you might that traditional styles float your boat in the wintertime but that you need something a tad lighter during the  summer months.  So once you figure out what’s going to fit the bill for your next vacation, give us a call and we’ll help you determine if our Maine Bed and Breakfast is the right fit or if we’ll have to wait to catch you next time!

Tips for Planning Your Maine Summer Vacation

April 23rd, 2012 by Judi Hauer

It’s that time of year again – time to plan your Maine summer vacation!  Most people can’t just spontaneously jaunt off for a couple of days along the coast, so taking that fun trip means planning.  Now, that’s not my favorite thing, especially because time is always at a premium.  But since you’ve already decided to hit coastal Maine for your vay-cay, I’ve put together a few questions to help guide your efforts.

  • When?  July and August are prime time in Kennebunkport Maine, but if you’re looking for some quality time in the surf,
    Maine Summer Vacation sunset

Whether you're on a romantic getaway or family vacation, add "sunset watching" to your itinerary!

consider early September, which is known for peak water temps.  If quiet, but still toasty, time on the sand, June is also a great time for a visit.

  • Midweek or weekend?  Midweek visits tend to feel a little more laid back than weekend ones, but time away from work can be harder to snag than a quick weekend escape.
  • How long?  Your to-do list keeps growing and the important people in your life are all vying for your attentions, but you deserve some time to just rest, relax, and recharge.  After you check off all the must-dos on your list (think shopping, beach time, sightseeing, etc.), that doesn’t leave much time for R&R, so no matter how long your Maine Summer Vacation, add a day or two – you won’t regret it!
  • Who’s comin’?  Is this going to be a family vacation or mini-honeymoon part two?  And we know from experience, combining the two doesn’t work too well for anyone, so it’s definitely best to decide early.  And if you’re going to live the tykes at home, work on the baby sitting situation early so that tiny Tommy and Tina don’t end up joining in the cuddle sessions during your romantic getaway!  So when you give our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast a call, let us know what kind of mood you’re going for and we’ll be happy to help!

A Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast for the Whole Family

August 23rd, 2011 by avadmin

Taking time out of everyday life to spend with loved ones is so important, and more often people are choosing to do double duty by enjoying a relaxing vacation with friends and family – and there’s no better place than our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast!  Whether you’re planning an all-out family reunion, a quick weekend getaway, or just a multi-generational vacation, the Maine Stay has accommodations to suit your needs.  Depending on your personal situation,

Cottage Suite 6 was great for our family trip to the Maine Stay!

there might be many rooms or suites that would work well, so here are some of our most popular configurations for families:

  • Family Cottage Suite 6: This two bedroom suite offers a queen bed in one room and two twin beds in a separate room.  The extremely comfortable sofa bed can be made up in the private living room, making this suite ideal for families of up to five.  The full eat-in kitchen and private bath round out the suite.  Sometimes, though, grandma and grandpa need a little space of their own, and Cottage Suite 7, while not adjoining, but next door, is a great option.
  • Smaller families often choose a Classic Cottage Suite (#10 or 11), each with two double beds.  Sometimes two families of four take both and choose to open the connecting doors.  This setup is also great for a girlfriends getaway to Kennebunkport Maine – yay for sleepovers!
  • When everyone in the family is twelve plus, the two suites in the main house also work beautifully.  Both the Captain Walker’s Suite and the Deluxe Fireplace Suite can accommodate up to 4 people, through the use of their Tempurpedic sleeper sofas.  Each has its own perk – #16 has a mahogany king sized bed, while #12 offers an additional seating area and easy access to a spare half bath (in addition to the private bath with jacuzzi).
  • Other times two bathrooms are a must (hello, teenage girls!), so families choose adjoining suites in our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast.  Contemporary cottage suites 8 and 9 each have king beds (although #9 also offers a sofa bed), which is a little comfier for taller folks, and can still sleep a total of six.  If the main house is more your style, the Deluxe Fireplace Suite and the Garden Room connect through a hallway (with a spare half bath – always good when families are around!), thus accommodating up to six people.  Two bathrooms and a private deck – what could be better for a family shindig?

The options don’t end there (especially as we are continually upgrading the property), but boring a reader is never a good thing.  So when planning your next family vacation or get-together, don’t discount a Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast. We’re set up perfectly for hosting your loved ones – just ask!

Date Night: Kennebunkport Dining With (out) Kids

August 2nd, 2011 by avadmin

As a Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast that welcomes families, we understand that dining with kids is usually very different than eating out as a couple.  In the morning adventurous kiddos can enjoy our gourmet breakfast daily, or they can opt for cereal (yes, we even have Lucky Charms!).  And lunches at the beach are flexible enough to satisfy

even the fussiest of eaters.  Dinner, however, is another matter.  Fortunately, Kennebunkport Maine offers a plethora of family-friendly restaurants.
So if you’re looking to nosh with the little ones, Federal Jack’s Brew Pub and Alisson’s Restaurants are super casual digs within stroller walking distance of our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast.  For food with a view that’s a step up and walkable for even the teeniest of tots, check out the Arundel Wharf Restaurant.  When reservations are a must (especially with a large party) so your kids won’t have to wait too long for dinner, Lucas on 9 is an excellent choice. Plus, it is just down the road from Goose Rocks Dairy, the best spot for homemade ice cream in Kennebunkport. Lobster

lovers will get a kick out of Nunan’s Lobster Hut, but don’t let that steer you away – hot dogs, PB&J, and grilled cheese are always available.  While not all children will enjoy the fusion style menu at Bandaloop, their macaroni and cheese has nearly universal appeal, allowing Mom and Dad to indulge in a great meal without alienating their tykes.
But every so often the idea of a dinner out without the little ones is incredibly appealing.  Fortunately, Clay Hill Farm Restaurant in Ogunquit has the perfect solution – Date Night!  Each Tuesday you can make your dinner reservation for 5:30, and enjoy a romantic dinner for two in a spectacular setting.  Your kids will be fed dinner and entertained on their Veranda with crafts and a movie until 8 pm.  For just $5 per child, it’s cheaper (and more convenient) than finding a babysitter.  Now if only they would brush their teeth and put them to bed too!
