Celebrating Columbus Day Weekend in Kennebunkport

October 4th, 2012 by Judi Hauer

Columbus Day Weekend is upon us and with it comes some of incredibly fun fall events to enjoy in Kennebunkport.  The seasonal festivities are already underway, so if you can sneak out of work early, go for it!  Playing hooky from work Friday?  We won’t tell!  But if you find yourself in town during the morning or afternoon hours, don’t forget that you can actually tourthe Wedding Cake

Enjoy a glorious Columbus Day Weekend!

House instead of just admiring it on the outside.  And with amazing weather in the forecast for tomorrow, hopping aboard one of the local multi-masted sailboats would be a great way to start off a special weekend escape.  Of course, there are always a plethora of activities and events to make your visit to a Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast especially enjoyable, but in case you need some extra inspiration, here is a selection of some fun things happening in the area this weekend:

  • Catch a show at the Ogunquit Playhouse!  The Buddy Holly Show is a Rock ‘N Roll musical sure to bring a smile to everyone’s faces.
  • Looking for music that’s a little more “low key”?  Check out the organ and trumpet duo at Christ Church in downtown Kennebunk.
  • All weekend long you can enjoy the arts scene of Kennebunkport with the Maine Women In the Arts Fall Fine Art Show.  Just around the corner from the Maine Stay Inn, you’ll find it at the Masonic Hall, across the street from our local Post Office.  Keep your eyes peeled for some of the artists whose work graces our walls!
  • Fall Farm Fun Day in Ogunquit brings all of the best things about fall in New England to one place.  Go for a hayride, paint some spooky pumpkins, and even make your own scarecrow!
  • Get in touch with nature at Laudholm Farm at the Wells Reserve as you enjoy a guided walk.  Experience the glorious fall foliage up close and personal and learn something about the miracles of foliage in New England!

All of us are looking forward to a spectacular fall weekend and fall foliage season and can’t wait to share it with you!

The Best Things About a Maine Bed and Breakfast in the Fall

October 1st, 2012 by Judi Hauer

It’s hard to believe that it is already October, but the cooler weather and stunning foliage we’ve been experiencing at our Maine Bed and Breakfast says that it sure is!  And while the daytime weather has been absolutely spectacular for exploring Southern Maine, the crisp evening air just begs for a fleece and some cuddling with your special someone.  While that in itself is something to celebrate, I thought I would share some of my favorite things about the Fall foliage season!

  • Ummm, it’s gorgeous!  What more can you say about the incredible, almost technicolor hues that the trees are taking on?

With a plethora of pumpkins, we’ve got to get creative!

Just make sure you’ve got plenty of space on your memory card and fully charged batteries, because you’re going to need it!  But whether you’re planning on taking in the view by land or by sea (or some combination of the two), we’re happy to help you figure out the best spots to explore and catch the most vivid hues.

  • Local produce – apples, pumpkins, squash – oh my!  Not only are these fun fall items cropping up on the breakfast menu at our Maine Bed and Breakfast, but area restaurants are also incorporating them into their creations.  Plus, pick-your-own farms are far from hard to find and anyone at the Maine Stay Inn would be happy to recommend their personal favorite!  And bringing home some freshly picked apples to test out one of our recipes at home sounds like a great way to cap off a getaway!
  • Hay rides!  Can you get any more classically “New England” than a fall hay ride?  Just imagine yourself in a fresh hay lined wagon with two horses clopping through the fallen leaves…. heavenly!  Rockin’ Horse Stables is one of several places in the area that offers hayrides in Kennebunkport, and on your way to their farm you can drink in one of the prettiest foliage displays in the area!

Scenic Strolls in Kennebunkport Maine

October 11th, 2011 by avadmin

Almost overnight, the fall foliage in Kennebunkport Maine has exploded with color, leading guests and residents alike have started exploring their favorite paths to enjoy the new sights.  We are extremely fortunate in this area to enjoy spectacular vistas of the Atlantic, but during the fall we get even luckier, as our position along the coast allows for viewing of the foliage at the same time as

we take in the salty air!  Honestly, from the second you step outside our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast, you can’t miss the blazing leaves and distinctly fall-smelling air.  But if you are looking for particularly breathtaking strolls, I’ve got a few up my sleeve, no matter the distance you like to travel.
Whether you are looking to enjoy the crisp autumn air for a few minutes or a few miles, wandering along Ocean Avenue is a favorite for everyone visiting Kennebunkport Maine.  Yes, if you venture far enough, you will approach the famous Bush Compound, but even the sights closer to our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast are breathtaking.  You will certainly enjoy the changing of the leaves as you pass historic homes, bustling marinas, St. Ann’s Church (famous for its stone facade and priceless location), and, of course, incredible views of the rest of the Southern Maine coastline across the bay.  Another great option with ample opportunities for leaf-peeping comes just on the other side of town at the Franciscan Monastery.  With almost 70 acres of riverfront land, including trails meandering through wooded areas (and, oh, how lovely they are right about now!), there’s plenty to explore and  photograph.  Plus, on your way back, you can stop at any one of the awesome Kennebunkport Restaurants for lunch in Dock Square!
The more adventurous (or just energetic) folks who might choose to partake in a more vigorous tour should consider some of the protected tracts of land that have helped to keep Kennebunkport Maine and the surrounding areas as idyllic as they are.  The Kennebunkport Conservation Trust maintains a large parcel with excellent trails just north of the Maine Stay.  The Smith Preserve is well known for its deciduous (i.e., gorgeous at this time of year!) trees and unusual wildlife, but its quiet and lightly trafficked location make it perfect for the solace seeker.  Laudholm Farm, or the Wells Reserve, is another area with awesome spots for foliage pics, especially those that might also include the water.  Take the beach trail down to the ocean, passing trees and grasses reaching their peak of color.  With the option of choosing educational paths, it’s a perfect excuse for ditching school or work!
But frankly, no matter where you choose to explore during your trip to Kennebunkport Maine, there’s no such thing as a “bad view” because this area is so naturally beautiful!  Now that the trees have finally taken on their signature fall wardrobe, the area is primed for pictures – even just the mental kind.  Snap away!

Leaf-Peeping in Kennebunkport Maine

September 28th, 2011 by avadmin

It’s finally that time again – time for enjoying glorious fall foliage in Kennebunkport Maine!  While there never seems to be a good way to predict when the “peak” of the colors will hit, late September to mid-late October is usually prime time for leaf-peeping.  It’s astounding to me that you can walk down one street and see trees ablaze with reds and yellows, but the next will still be lush and green.  How does that happen?!  So although I may not fully understand the science behind the turning of the leaves, that doesn’t prevent me from enjoying their splendor.

Fortunately for visitors of our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast, there are ample ways to enjoy the colors, no matter what your preferences are in terms of daily activities.  Here’s a smattering of some excellent ways to savor the view!

For the outdoor lover in you, head to one of the many nature preserves in and around Kennebunkport Maine.  The Kennebunkport Conservation Trust protects enormous tracts of land encompassing fields, streams, and vernal pools.  Their many trails will lead you right into the heart of our deciduous forests and surround you with color.  If you prefer to take advantage of our coastal location, head to the Rachel Carson Wildlife Refuge or Laudholm Trust at the Wells Reserve.  Both offer trails surrounded by forests (we all just love trees at this time of year!) with views of tidal estuaries.  Laudholm Trust’s Beach Trail will lead you to a spectacular protected stretch of sand with an amazing array of trees at your back.
But if trekking through the forests isn’t your speed, how about a scenic ride?  The horse-drawn carriage plods slowly through the historic district, offering riders views of the towering trees and historic homes that comprise the area around our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast.  The Intown Trolley offers sweeping loops through historic Kennebunkport, Ocean Avenue, and Kennebunk Beach.  The antique cars at the Seashore Trolley Museum put on a pumpkin ride at this time of year that is always a blast for guests of all ages.
But if you are just up for a scenic stroll, the gorgeous beaches and coastline of Kennebunkport Maine are certainly one of the best venues for enjoying the fall colors.  Walking along Ocean Avenue, you’ll be treated to ocean vistas, grand Maine cottages, and, of course, trees and shrubs ablaze with color.  Sometimes, though, vacations just require old fashioned relaxation, so lounging in the backyard of our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast is another ideal location for enjoying the fall sights.  Ringed by maples, oaks, and sycamores, the adirondack chairs and hammock are perfect for watching the reds and orange leaves flutter in the breeze!  With all these amazing opportunities for leaf-peeping in Kennebunkport you’re sure not to miss a moment primed for pictures.  Happy fall!
