Maine Bed and Breakfast Honors Veterans

Many people are looking forward to celebrating Veteran’s Day tomorrow, and while it’s easy to forget the reason why we have an extra day off from work or school, our Maine bed and breakfast is taking the opportunity to honor our nation’s veterans.  Unlike Memorial Day, which honors fallen veterans, most communities don’t celebrate with a parade or armed salute in a local cemetery, so we can sometimes forget what this holiday is all about.  We’re expressing our gratitude for those who have served our country by offering select rooms to active and retired members of the US military at no charge.  This is our fourth year participating in the BnBs for Vets program, and we’re really excited to welcome these national heroes to our Maine bed and breakfast tomorrow!  Last year, I took a walk our to the Bush family compound along Parson’s Way, heading out from the Maine Stay Inn along Ocean Avenue.  It was an absolutely gorgeous day, and I hope that tomorrow is just as beautiful.  I rounded the corner by St. Ann’s Episcopal Church, just to glimpse an American flag flying over the Atlantic in a cloudless sky.   flagpole flying in the essentially cloudless sky. Just about two miles from my start at our Maine Bed and Breakfast, I reached a scenic precipice overlooking the Bush Compound, where a monument honors George H.W. Bush’s military service.  Not only that, it honors the service of all veterans, and how better to celebrate Veteran’s Day than by stumbling upon this?  It was so serendipitous, but I certainly plan on doing the same this year.  Needless to say, Veterans Day 2012 was a great one in Kennebunkport Maine, and I am hoping tomorrow is just as great – no matter where or how you celebrate!

Our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast Honors Veterans

As a way to thank members of our military, both active and retired, for their service to this great nation, we donated several rooms at our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfastto veterans and their families last night.  For the second year in a row, we have woken up on Veterans’ Day to a dining room full of folks who have done us all a great service.  We were honored to listen to some of their fantastic stories and share their company.  Last night, we were proud to host 18

military members and their spouses – it was such a treat!  We can’t wait to participate next year – but, vets, please remember to reserve your room early, as they get snatched up quickly!

Our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast proudly joined the ranks of 340 other US Inns and B&Bs, as well as 215 Canadian establishments, to host veterans for no charge last night.  In 2008, a variety of inns in West Virginia banded together to pay homage to members of the military with their “B&Bs for Vets” program.  The program has grown each year since, and in 2010, the Maine Stay joined over 900 inns participating in the program.  This year, the Professional Association of Innkeepers International took over the program, incorporating it into their Better Way to Stay campaign.  Yes, this certainly shows that bed and breakfasts are a lodging choice a head above the rest – with a sense of character and honor.  I mean, seriously, when was the last time a big hotel gave away something for free?  And to top it off, we dished up a favorite cold weather breakfast feast – oven coddled eggs over herbed mashed potatoes, decadent raspberry quick bread, thick slices of country ham, and a fresh fruit started.  Delicious!

But the most satisfying part was witnessing the sheer pleasure it brought to our guests – their smiles were certainly thanks enough.  We can’t wait for next Veteran’s Day in Kennebunkport Maine!
