Christmas Prelude 2016 Is Coming to Kennebunkport!

It feels like the Halloween candy has hardly been put away, but Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and that means that Christmas Prelude in Kennebunkport is not far behind! This Christmas festival has been rated the second best Christmas festival in the nation, and is always included on worldwide lists of the best places to celebrate Christmas. In fact, I just read today that Kennebunkport’s Christmas Prelude made another “top 10” list for Christmas celebrations, and we couldn’t agree more!

Christmas Prelude was the brain child of the local business association as a way to thank the local community for its support throughout the year and has blossomed into a world-renowned Christmas Festival. That’s quite the achievement for  Kennebunkport Maine and its 3,000 year round residents! Over the last 34 years, Christmas Prelude has become a two week long celebration that is sure to get everyone in the Christmas spirit!

This year visitors can take part in the festivities from December 1-11, with events every day of the week. And while the first tree lighting on December 2 is often draws crowds of 10,000 people to Dock Square, it is really the more low key events that keep visitors coming back year after year.

The candlelit tours of the Historic Inns of Kennebunkport and the annual Walk to Bethlehem (recreating Mary and Joseph’s search for an inn right here in Kennebunkport) are sure to banish any evidence of ba-humbug and get everyone in the spirit of the season! Chestnuts roasting on open fires are common throughout the celebration, and Santa frequents the events, arriving on lobster boat and fire truck in classic Maine style.

But with craft fairs and gallery open houses throughout the celebration, it’s also a great way to start and finish lots of your holiday shopping. Best of all, most of the events are within very easy walking distance of the Maine Stay Inn, which means that you can enjoy all the festivities without ever fighting for parking! In fact, the largest craft fair of all is held at the Consolidated School, and the Maine Stay happens to be the closest inn to the action. But no matter what events you choose to enjoy, Christmas Prelude is sure to be the perfect way to kick off your holiday season!
