Holiday Shopping in Kennebunkport Maine

November 18th, 2013 by Judi Hauer

Honeymoon (105)

Check out the unique shops in Kennebunkport’s Dock Square!

Kennebunkport Maine is often known for its assortment of fine shops, and that means that it’s a prime location to get some holiday shopping done!  All of us at the Maine Stay Inn are feel so lucky to have such a great spot for retail therapy just steps away.  And unlike many vacation destinations, Dock Square is not overrun with T-shirt shops and souvenir stands.  Instead, you’ll find incredible art galleries, chic boutiques, and fine crafts with products from many local craftsmen.  No, you’re not going to find the Gap or an H&M, but the products sold in Kennebunkport Maine really reflect the character of New England and the uniqueness of the area.  Now, if more mainstream stores are what you’re searching for, don’t worry!  There are two world-class outlet centers not far from our Kennebunkport bed and breakfast.  Heading to our south, you’ll find the Kittery Outlets by Tanger, with more stores and brands than I could ever imagine!  Frankly, the only downside I see here is that this outlet center is in a strip mall kind of set up, which means that walking or driving between cluster isn’t the most exciting or inspiring of events.  That said, whatever Christmas shopping you can’t get done in Kennebunkport you can definitely cross off the list here.  Or you could head north to the Freeport Outlets, with LLBean as the crown jewel of this shopping area.  And while they don’t have quite as many stores as you might find in Freeport, you’ll experience a very pleasant small town feel while enjoying all the  benefits of a huge shopping complex.  And if you’ve got the bug to hit up LLBean at 2 am just because you can, this is definitely the place to go.  But no matter which direction you head or if you stay right in town, you’re sure to enjoy your holiday preparation this year when shopping in Kennebunkport Maine!

A New Kennebunkport Addition: Galleries at Morning Walk

May 14th, 2012 by Judi Hauer

About six months ago, a construction site popped up in a field along Route 35 in Kennebunk, just under a mile from our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast.  We passed it at least once daily as we check off items on the “to-do” list – grocery store, FedEx, hardware store, etc. – each time wondering what would become of this strange collection of shed-like buildings.  Could they be

some kind of house? Nah, they’re too small for that.  How about storage?  Nope, the beautiful french doors on each one killed that idea.  Finally, though, a sign was posted for “The Galleries at Morning Walk.”  This collection of art galleries and retail spaces are a perfect way to greet visitors to town, as the unique, elegant, and still charming vibe perfectly represents all that Kennebunkport offers.

So about a week ago, we decided to venture out of our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast on a rainy evening to check out the grand opening of this great collection.  We were all pleased to see that the community had come out in droves to support these groundbreaking merchants.  As we strolled from cottage to cottage, we enjoyed a great assortment of wares, from photography and paintings to housewares and jewelry.  But we were never so pleased as when we stepped into one, tucked into the far corner.  A new branch of Calluna Fine Flowers!  This unique floral design, gift, and clothing shop has become a staple for us, and a place we turn to for inventive and stunning floral arrangements.  And while guests ask often where they can find these great products, a trip to Ogunquit (while just 12 miles away) is sometimes just not in the cards.  So now, guests of our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast can just stroll across the bridge (or drive – there is parking) and check out all of the amazing things she has to offer.  We are all so excited about the Galleries at Morning Walk, and can’t wait to go back and explore, this time when it’s not raining!

Great Antiquing Near Maine Bed and Breakfasts

January 22nd, 2012 by avadmin

One of the many things I take for granted is the amazing opportunities for antiquing in a community known for its Maine Bed and Breakfasts.  People ask all year long about the best places to shop for antiques, and while I have been to quite a few, I usually blow through, just picking up a particular item I know is just waiting for me.  For instance, we regularly use an all-natural beeswax based furniture polish on the wooden furniture at our Kennebunkport Maine Bed and Breakfast.  And I can get 16 ounces of this magical citrus-scented goo for just $8.50 at Arundel Antiques, located at the corner of Route 1 and Log Cabin Road, which

conveniently turns into Kennebunkport’s Maine Street just 6 miles from its front door.  So yes, that means it’s just six miles from our front door!  Plus, we’re talking six miles of straight-shot driving with just one stop sign – no city style driving here.  Or how about Antiques on Nine, which carries my favorite silver and brass sea animal statues and fantastic tote bags made from woven rugs?  Luckily for me, but not my wallet, that’s just a two minute drive from the Maine Stay – I couldn’t ask for closer if I tried!

But today, I was on a mission, and while I didn’t find exactly what I was looking for, I had the opportunity to explore at least six of our local antique shops.  Boy, are they fantastic!  While some offer truly incredible pieces of furniture in the finest condition, others feature immense collections of cups and saucers, books, or dolls.  Plus, many offer some of both and a little of everything in between!  So this afternoon, after all of our rooms were cleaned and breakfast prep squared away, my mother and I headed out to do some shopping.  Now I am not sure that we would have ordinarily ventured out on such a cold day when we had so much to do at the inn, but we had a tip from one of our wonderful guests that inspired our mission.  Unfortunately the piece she spotted was just a hair to narrow for the Keurig coffee maker.  Shucks!  Despite the disappointing outcome of the expedition, I realized what gems are located so close to the amazing Maine Bed and Breakfasts located in Kennebunkport Maine, and no matter the season, antiquing is a great way to spend a relaxing afternoon!

So the next time you are at a loss for how to spend your much needed vacation time, take a swing by some of our incredible antique shops.  And if you happen to find a circa 1860s piece that is no more than 36 inches wide and at least 13 inches deep with at least two drawers that could house our coffee and tea bar, give us a holler!  I am more than ready for my next antiquing trip in Southern Maine!
