A Maine Summer Vacation in Kennebunkport

May 19th, 2013 by Judi Hauer

With Memorial Day Weekend just around the corner, that means that it is summer vacation time, and there’s no better place to enjoy a Maine summer vacation that in Kennebunkport!  Now you may think that I am a little biased towards this charming town, but the truth is that I’m “from away” and have explored just about every coastal vacation area in New England and after all of that travel, there’s a reason I landed in Kennebunkport.  Okay, more than a few reasons… So today I’ve decided to share some of my personal reasons for loving Kennebunkport for a Maine summer vacation.

One of the many great summer scenes in Kennebunkport!

One of the many great summer scenes in Kennebunkport!

  • It’s easy to get to!  No seriously, it’s a mere 86 miles from downtown Boston, and since you can cruise up I-95 on your typical three and four lane highways, the trip is easy-peasy.  Plus, with just two wide toll plazas, even that brief slowdown goes quickly (and it’s even speedier if you’ve got and “EZPass”).  Seriously, though, Kennebunkport has to be one of the most pain-free trips to your summer vacation destination and you’ll have plenty of gas to spare!  And if you’re a car-less urbanite, the Amtrak Downeaster is a fantastic and eco-friendly option!
  • You can go car-free in Kennebunkport!  With great sidewalks leading to fantastic activities and restaurants, you certainly don’t need to have a car in town.  Sure, if you want to do some more exploring, you certainly can bring a vehicle (and we have ample free parking), but many folks choose to explore by scooter or bicycle.  And yes, you can get either of those things within a short walk from the Maine Stay Inn!
  • The food is top notch.  Now many vacation destinations have a bad rap for serving less than stellar cuisine, and when you’re a food lover like me, that just takes the wind out of my sails.  But Kennebunkport is full of eateries that offer delectable cuisine that is sure to rival some of the great culinary havens in the country.
  • Kennebunkport has outdoor activities for everyone!  A lot of people don’t think about a Maine Summer Vacation meaning spending time at the beach, but Kennebunkport is known for its long stretches of soft sand and a few bits of craggy coastline, sure to satisfy everyone’s scenery needs.  But fortunately, if you’re looking for a break from some fun in the sun, there are tons of great trails through acres of concentration land and excellent spots for biking.  And if you’re not one to connect with Mother Nature, you can still enjoy a beautiful seaside setting while taking part in some retail therapy!

Honestly, I could go on and on about why Kennebunkport is ideal for your Maine Summer vacation, but the truth is, it’s great any time of year!  All of the innkeepers and staff at the Maine Stay Inn can’t wait to show you first hand everything that Kennebunkport has to offer – see you soon!

Searching for Sweets in Kennebunkport Maine

June 25th, 2012 by Judi Hauer

If you’re anything like me and have more than just a single sweet tooth (I’d say I have a whole mouth full!), look no further than Kennebunkport Maine to quell your cravings.  Fortunately, though not for my waistline, there are lots of great options for candy, cookies, and frozen confections just a short stroll from our Kennebunkport bed and breakfast.  But if you find yourself hankering for a sugar fix before you even arrive, Yummiescandy store in Kittery is a great place to stop.  Not only are they conveniently located for

some extra retail therapy, they’ve got over 10,000 pounds of sweets on their shelves at all times.  You’ll never see anything like it!  Assuming you have a teeny bit more control that I do, and you actually make it into Kennebunkport, the very first thing you’ll likely encounter is the Sugar Shack.  Located right next to the area Chamber of Commerce, it’s brightly colored sign and inventive window display are sure to catch your attention.  And their traditional assortment of sweets come in just as striking tones.  Nearby, you’ll find the new Chase Hill Bakery, a once famous bakery, whose owner retired, only to reopen recently.  It’s well on its way toward reclaiming its former glory.

As you drive deeper into town, you’ll pass a brand new frozen yogurt shop (stay tuned for more on that one at a later date!) and a great new artisan ice cream shop called Rococo.  With rich and flavorful varieties,  its definitely a new fave! But if some good old chocolate is what you crave, don’t miss out on the Candy Man.  Not only do they offer a mix of sweet munchies by the bin, but their chocolate assortment is out of this world, with the items made at their very own shop in York, ME.  No matter what you’re craving  though, Kennebunkport Maine has got you covered!

Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast Offers Awesome June Savings!

June 1st, 2012 by Judi Hauer

Today marks an exciting day at our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast- the start of June and of our incredible early summer special.  Yes, while bed and breakfasts throughout the area have entered their summertime pricing, we’ve decided to make a June

vacation even more affordable!  Though the water temperatures haven’t quite reached their annual peaks, a day at the beach this month is sure to be just as lovely.  In fact, with the kiddos not out of school just yet, the sands are likely to be even more peaceful and relaxing.  Plus, the Maine Stay Inn will still make sure to provide everything to make your beach vay-cay as easy as possible (think complimentary parking passes for our closest stunning beaches, towels, chairs, and even umbrellas).  All you have to do is pack the sunscreen!

So with rates starting at just $169 per night, there’s no reason not to get a jump on summer with a Kennebunkport getaway.  You can enjoy breakfast on our wraparound porch, and start the day off right with delectable fresh fruits, juices, teas and coffees, a gourmet breakfast inspired by the best seasonal produce, and cap it off with a bowl of homemade granola – the perfect way to fuel your adventures around town.  Cool beverages and freshly baked goodies will be waiting in the afternoon, as an ideal post-lunch dessert or pre-dinner snack.  Many visitors to our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast choose to indulge while relaxing on the wraparound porch.  It’s ideal for enjoying this early summer weather and for watching the horse-drawn carriage plod by.  And with these long, glorious days, no matter what your agenda has in store, they’ll be plenty of time to lounge with a glass of wine in our great big backyard.  So now that Memorial Day has come and gone, it’s time to get to work planning your summer vacation to a Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast!

5 Reasons to Choose a Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast This Summer

May 23rd, 2012 by Judi Hauer

I hate to admit it, but I am a teeny bit biased – I just love BnBs, so staying at a Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast for a summer vacation would seem like a natural choice, but it turns out that there are plenty of folks who have only stayed in big hotels.  For them, choosing to visit a B&B would stretch their comfort zone.  But as I enjoyed a leisurely jog through town today, I passed the only big hotels in town, and it got me thinking about why choosing a Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast, like the Maine Stay Inn, is the logical choice for a summertime (or anytime) getaway.  By the time I got back, I had pared my list down to five main reasons (and not in any particular order):

  • Location, location, location!  The fact is, that because B&Bs are smaller than hotels, you’ll get much closer to “the action”  -
    Kennebunkport harbor

Just a block from the harbor!

in Kennebunkport you’d be able to walk to shops, galleries, restaurants, and the waterfront from a bed and breakfast, but not if you chose one of the few area hotels.

  • Top-notch service.  Years ago, a Kennebunkport bed and breakfast might have been just that, but not today!  Innkeepers and staff members are dedicated to providing visitors with the best service possible, without being overbearing.  Not to worry, there won’t be any grannies pounding on your door, reminding you to leave room for the holy ghost here!
  • The food!  At a big hotel in town, you’re lucky to find a continental style smattering of cold muffins or pastries that you can pretty much guarantee haven’t been baked fresh, but at the Maine Stay Inn, gourmet breakfast will greet you daily!  Honestly, what could be better than waking up to the smell of freshly baking breads or rolls?  Plus, close proximity to great restaurants means that you’ll have easy access for the meals we don’t serve.
  • Peace and quiet… shhhh!  Let’s keep this our little secret, but despite being just a few short blocks from the heart of downtown, the Maine Stay sits on nearly two acres of land, which means that the grounds are nice and quiet.  Perfect for relaxing, reading, or socializing with your family!
  • Unique accommodations.  Who wants to have the same experience as the guy at the end of the breakfast table?  Not me, that’s for sure!  So with 17 different rooms, suites, and cottages, you can be sure to have something to fit your style and the experience (and price) you are looking for!

So this summer, the choice is clear – try a Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast for your summer vacation!

Tips for Planning Your Maine Summer Vacation

April 23rd, 2012 by Judi Hauer

It’s that time of year again – time to plan your Maine summer vacation!  Most people can’t just spontaneously jaunt off for a couple of days along the coast, so taking that fun trip means planning.  Now, that’s not my favorite thing, especially because time is always at a premium.  But since you’ve already decided to hit coastal Maine for your vay-cay, I’ve put together a few questions to help guide your efforts.

  • When?  July and August are prime time in Kennebunkport Maine, but if you’re looking for some quality time in the surf,
    Maine Summer Vacation sunset

Whether you're on a romantic getaway or family vacation, add "sunset watching" to your itinerary!

consider early September, which is known for peak water temps.  If quiet, but still toasty, time on the sand, June is also a great time for a visit.

  • Midweek or weekend?  Midweek visits tend to feel a little more laid back than weekend ones, but time away from work can be harder to snag than a quick weekend escape.
  • How long?  Your to-do list keeps growing and the important people in your life are all vying for your attentions, but you deserve some time to just rest, relax, and recharge.  After you check off all the must-dos on your list (think shopping, beach time, sightseeing, etc.), that doesn’t leave much time for R&R, so no matter how long your Maine Summer Vacation, add a day or two – you won’t regret it!
  • Who’s comin’?  Is this going to be a family vacation or mini-honeymoon part two?  And we know from experience, combining the two doesn’t work too well for anyone, so it’s definitely best to decide early.  And if you’re going to live the tykes at home, work on the baby sitting situation early so that tiny Tommy and Tina don’t end up joining in the cuddle sessions during your romantic getaway!  So when you give our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast a call, let us know what kind of mood you’re going for and we’ll be happy to help!

Top 10: June in Kennebunkport Maine

June 10th, 2011 by avadmin

Kennebunkport Maine is a wonderful town to visit at any time of year, especially once the weather has warmed.  And with temps reaching into the high 80s this week, June is certainly one of those times!  Granted, I might be a little biased, but there are millions of reasons that Kennebunkport Maine is the ideal spot for a getaway.  Here’s a peek at my top ten:

10. June means lower rates and better deals.  Our Kennebunkport Maine Bed and Breakfast offers incredible reduced rates during the entire month (with the creation of a new “Shoulder Season” starting at just $169 per night), and many area activities and restaurants offer incentives to travelers (and residents) – follow us on Twitter for retweets of the best deals around.

9.  Cool nights, and I don’t just mean fun!  In June, evenings are generally a little cooler than they are in July and August, which is great, because that means you’ll be very comfortable when snuggling with your special someone in front of your gas fireplace.  Plus, it’s the perfect temperature for shorts and a light sweater – my favorite!

8.  Restaurants are less crowded, which is always a win-win situation.  Smaller crowds mean better service and shorter (or non-existent) waits at your favorite Kennebunkport Maine restaurants.

7.  Parking at Parsons Beach.  With barely a dozen spots to park, we only dare to send summer guests on bikes, early in the morning or near sunset.  But in June, you’ll be able to claim that primo location.

6.  Soft-shell lobsters.  While the restaurants might tell you that hard shell lobsters are the thing to choose, I find that the soft-shell variety tend to have sweeter meat.  Plus they’re easier to break into – no crackers required!

5.  Great flowers.  It might not seem like an important thing, but when all the gardens in Kennebunkport Maine are in bloom, there’s no prettier sight!

4.  Nunan’s Lobster Hut and the Clam Shack are open!  ’Nuff said.

3.  Breakfast on the porch.  There’s nothing more relaxing that dining on our wraparound porch each morning, listening to the birds chirp and the horse-drawn carriage clop by.

A beautiful June afternoon!

2.  Peaceful beaches.  There’s ample opportunity to enjoy the beautiful sands that grace Kennebunkport Maine shorelines, and in June there’s little risk of tripping over abandoned  sand toys.

1.  It’s beautiful!  And I mean spectacularly beautiful.  But you will just have to visit and see for yourself, and, of course, create your very own “Tope Ten” list!

The Kennebunkport Festival Draws to a Close

June 5th, 2011 by avadmin

The Kennebunkport Festival has brought much excitement to Kennebunkport Maine during the past five days, as food, wine, and fine art have filled this quaint New England community.  Held the week following Memorial Day, the

Kennebunkport Festival Art Show

Don't miss out on the amazing artwork around town during the Kennebunkport Festival!

Kennebunkport Festival is a wonderful way to kick off summer, and enjoy some of the things that make the area particularly unique as a vacation destination.

Some of the most popular events include the Art of Dining dinners held at some of the stunning private residences that dot the area, the chic After Parties, the Grand Tasting, and Brews and Tunes.  The Art of Dining dinners are hosted by incredible chefs, creating custom meals inspired by renowned area artists.  There’s plenty of opportunity to peep at these gorgeous homes, as well as admire the phenomenal artwork present for the evening (but I must admit that the oogling peaks my interest most!).

No matter where you choose to dine, you can take advantage of the rockin’ parties each night at some of the chicest spots in town.  Some of the hotspots this year were Bandaloop Restaurant and Stripers.  With signature cocktails, light apps and great music, the After Party is a great way to spend the evening in Kennebunkport Maine.

A gorgeous afternoon in Kennebunkport Maine

A spectacular afternoon!

On a gorgeous early summer afternoon, guests and residents alike visited the Colony Hotel, situated about a mile outside of downtown, to view an incredible display of artwork.  While there, many chose not to miss out on the Grand Tasting, with samples from over 60 restaurants and wineries.  Held on their poolside patio, it was the ideal venue for this event.  Casual mingling and noshing was the perfect way to spend an afternoon.  Back in Dock Square, hundreds headed to the marina for three hours of live music.  While burgers and beers were available (hence the name “Brews and Tunes”), many just enjoyed the perfect spring afternoon.

At our Kennebunkport Maine Bed and Breakfast, we’re already looking forward to next year’s Kennebunkport Festival, which is sure to be better than ever.

Shoulder Season Special Returns to Kennebunkport!

May 30th, 2011 by avadmin

As Memorial Day Weekend draws to a close, Kennebunkport Maine welcomes an exciting season, and not just

Such peaceful views!

because I can finally wear white!  The Maine Stay has brought back its “Shoulder Season,” known for all the perks of Maine’s glorious summer, but at lower prices.  Because the kids aren’t out of school quite yet, the beaches aren’t packed, which means a quiet stroll for you and your special someone, or an uninterrupted gossip session for you and the girls.

But your favorite things about Kennebunkport Maine are in full force!  That restaurant meal you’ve been craving is ready and waiting, as nearly all restaurants have already gone to their summertime hours.  But because early June has remained a bit of a secret for the area, you’ll be able to get that window table that is in hot demand.  And guess what? The lobster cruises, schooner rides, and sunset sails are all rigged and ready!  In fact, I even prefer June jaunts onto the water, because there are fewer boats on the water, making you feel as though you’ve traveled thousands of miles to some faraway land.  Plus the slightly cooler evening air is prime for snuggling!

And best of all, you’ll receive the same great hospitality and amenities at your Kennebunkport Maine Bed and Breakfast, but with rates starting as low as $169 per night!  Plus, don’t forget that we’ve got you covered – with towels and umbrellas, perfect for your trip to the beach!  To make your beach getaway even better, we’ll include parking passes to the Kennebunk beaches, eliminating any possible hassles before hopping in the ocean!  We all hope you’ll enjoy the month of June as much as we do!

Summertime Bring Sweet Treats to Kennebunkport Maine

April 30th, 2011 by avadmin

In Kennebunkport Maine, the return of ice cream means the return of summer – and by that I mean that my favorite spots for a cup or cone have now opened, all just minutes from our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for a good, healthy meal, but sometimes a girl’s gotta have ice cream!  Honestly, though, what’s better on a hot summer night than a double scoop dribbling down the sides of a waffle cone as you sit by the ocean?  That’s just around the corner (in terms of time and geography)!

kennebunkport maine desserts

Cookies in the afternoon and ice cream after dinner - sounds good to me!

So when you’re visiting our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast this summer, make sure not to skip the best places for ice cream.  Two staples sit just a few blocks away in downtown Kennebunkport Maine.  If you prefer cups to cones (or are watching your figure), test out Roly’s English Fudge.  Don’t let the name deceive you, because it dishes up some of the best gelato around!  Decadent and creamy, gelato has fewer calories and fat than ice cream, so it’s the ideal option for an evening treat, even if you’re regretting that extra cup of chowder or three pound lobster from dinner.  Plus, it’s just delicious!

Only about 12 houses separate the Maine Stay Inn from a New England staple – Ben & Jerry’s.  So this summer, when you’re craving some Chunky Monkey to top off your Berry Berry Extraordinary vacation to Kennebunkport Maine, don’t pass up on a cone.  Or cup, whatever you like.  Plus, even though Ben & Jerry’s is a chain, it’s made in New England, so you’re still supporting the local food movement!

But sometimes nothing will do but a DQ (who doesn’t love a rhyme now and then?)!  Their soft and creamy blends may only come in two flavors, but there’s always something for everyone.  Located in downtown Kennebunk, this American favorite might be off the beaten path, but is still less than ten minutes from our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast.  So indulge in a candy packed Blizzard as you say “hello” to summer!

The hometown hero when it comes to ice cream is Big Daddy’s, located in Wells, Maine.  The last of my faves to open, it’s well worth the wait.  Everything is homemade – even the peppermint stick – and you can absolutely tell.  The ice cream here is so good that I dream about it all winter long, even when it’s snowing.  But they’ve opened for the season, reminding me that summer is almost here!  So plan your vacation to Kennebunkport Maine today.  And don’t forget the sign as you cross into Maine “the way life should be” – in my book, that means calorie free, so leave ‘em at the border!

Top 10 Best Things about Summer in Kennebunkport Maine

April 23rd, 2011 by avadmin

On an unseasonably cool day like today, I sit in our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast (while I wait for guests to

Kennebunkport Maine beaches

Stunning beaches aren't the only reason to visit Kennebunkport this summer!

check-in, of course!) and daydream about the amazingness of summer in Kennebunkport Maine. And not just for the return of green leaves and sunshine. So here’s today’s list of the top 10 things I can’t wait to enjoy this summer in Kennebunkport Maine:

  1. Impatiens at the Maine Stay –  At our Kennebunkport Inn, Walter’s impatiens are one of the first signals of summer. While these signature white and coral orbs have hung on our wraparound porch for at least 40 years, they never lose their intrigue – plus, you just want to get outside and take a peek!
  2. Afternoon Naps in the hammock –  ’Nuff said.  Seriously, what is better than an outdoor snooze, with the afternoon breeze gently rocking you to sleep?
  3. The Horse-drawn Carriage –  One of the most common questions I get asked by someone making a reservation at our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast is if it is going to be noisy (reminder: we are on Maine Street, not Main Street!).  Ummm, no.  But in the summertime, the most common thing you’ll here is the clip-clop of the horse-drawn carriage doing loops of the historic district.  It’s such a soothing sound that takes you back in time!
  4. Music on the Patio at One Dock –  Every night in the summertime, One Dock Restaurant (part of the Kennebunkport Inn) offers live music, much of it performed outside, so as you stroll through Kennebunkport Maine, jazz music, acoustic guitar, and lovely vocals waft through the air.  It’s the perfect accompaniment to … #5!

  5. Warm Sunsets –  While the Pacific coastline might claim the best sunsets in the nation, those in Kennebunkport Maine will give any venue a run for it’s money.  But my favorite spot is just steps from our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast – the Dock Square Bridge!
  6. Volleyball in the backyard –  The feel of grass under your feet and good, honest fun with friends, family, and other guests is one of my favorite things about summer at the Maine Stay.
  7. Outdoor dinners –  Grab a lobster to go from Port Lobster or delicious soups and sandwiches from Cape Porpoise Kitchen to enjoy in our spacious back yard, or choose one of the many Kennebunkport restaurants with open-air eating areas.  Nothing says “summer” better than that!
  8. Barefoot walks our GORGEOUS beaches –  Kennebunkport Maine is known for its phenomenal coastline, so kick off your shoes and dig your toes into our plentiful (and beautiful) stretches of sand!
  9. Lobster at Nunan’s –  This old-fashioned Lobster Hut screams summer in New England.  A lobster there, and you’ll never go anywhere else.
  10. Breakfast on the Porch –  Honestly, this is the best part!  Enjoying a gourmet morning meal at our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast doesn’t get any better than when it’s savored in the fresh sea air.

So when planning your Summer Vacation, make it in Kennebunkport Maine – a quintessential New England Village that’s perfect for exploring or just relaxing!
