HBO Documentary “41″ Premiers in Kennebunkport

June 13th, 2012 by Judi Hauer

Over the last week or so, there has been a flurry of activity not far from our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfastat the Bush family compound, and it certainly warrants a bit of attention.  Not only did George H.W. Bush just celebrated his 88th birthday, but the Navy just completed construction of the USS George H.W. Bush, a Nimitz-class supercarrier.  Honestly, I have no idea what that

The Bush Estate has been buzzing with activity this week!

means, but I am pretty sure it means big, powerful, and pricey!  But after a small, contained vacuum cleaner fire at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, it set sail on its way to Kennebunkport, where the former President  took a helicopter from his estate to the ship.  It apparently came close enough to shore that you could see it very clearly, but, of course, I missed that incredible photo-op! Nevertheless, this was a momentous occasion, especially because it was the first time in naval history where such a ship was commissioned for a still-living namesake.

But what seemed to cause an even greater stir this week was the premier of the HBO documentary “41,” which took place on the grounds of St. Ann’s Church.  An easy walk from the Maine Stay Inn, many visitors took the opportunity to stroll by.  Of course, security was tight, but the unimaginably large tent was visible from the Kennebunk Beaches and was quite a sight to behold when viewing from Ocean Avenue.  Now, the rest of us will just have to wait for the public airing of this supposedly wonderful film, but fortunately, the wait’s not too long – it runs on HBO tomorrow night!  For a preview, check out the trailer here on HBO’s YouTube channel.  I don’t know about you, but I will certainly be watching – even if only to catch a glimpse of Kennebunkport “back in the day!”

Kennebunkport Maine Shopping in Dock Square

Dock Square - Perfect for holiday shopping in Kennebunkport Maine

The small boutiques, galleries, and antique shops that line the streets in Kennebunkport Maine are perfect for filling Christmas stockings and completing wish-lists, but they also make the ideal location for participating in Small Business Saturday.  Now, this charming New England village might not have any big box stores for your Black Friday sprees (although all your faves are at your fingertips just up the road in Biddeford), but it does have countless opportunities for one-of-a-kind gifts.  Next year, when planning your Thanksgiving getaway, don’t despair – you can still indulge in your Black Friday traditions when visiting Kennebunkport Maine. Every year at our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast we have a visitor or two who head off (no matter the time or weather) in order to score big deals for their Christmas lists, but every year they return to stroll our scenic streets.  And with the innovation of Small Business Saturday, Kennebunkport can fulfill any shopper’s needs for the holiday season.  So here’s just a smattering of the incredible small businesses in town sure to have just the thing you’re looking for:

  • For classic women’s wear, check out Carla’s Boutique, known for their high and and even higher quality apparel. If you’re in need of something a little trendier, try Benoits – but be forewarned, their jewelry is so fabulous you might not be able to leave empty handed!  American Sailor will satisfy the whole family’s need for seaside prep, while Zen and Company caters to those looking for Bohemian chic.
  • Abacus and Complements both offer unique and hand-crafted options for jewelry and home accessories – no cookie cutter gifts here!
  • Port Shoes offers comfortable footwear ideal for exploring Kennebunkport Maine, but with personality and style.  Plus, it’s the only spot in town to find the North Face products (check that off your list!).
  • Living room need a boost?  Check out Minka Home or Spaces for modern accessories with spunk.
  • Unique gifts for kiddos and adults alike are easily found at DayTrip Jr. and DayTrip Society.
So next year when planning your holiday shopping adventures, Kennebunkport Maine should top your list!  Happy Holidays!

Kennebunkport Maine And Its Wacky Weather

November 20th, 2011 by avadmin

We all know that the weather in Kennebunkport Maine and all of New England is entirely unpredictable, but this year it seems especially fickle.  Today, it hit 60 degrees, but exactly one year ago today it was a paltry 26 degrees!  But on Halloween, New England was walloped with an unprecedented October snowstorm, requiring plowing of our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast multiple times.  After that, who would have thought that you would need, or even want, your short-sleeved clothing and flip-flops out again?  Not us!

Fall in Kennebunkport Maine

Wreaths and Pumpkins!

But here in Kennebunkport Maine, we are clinging dearly to these lovely, mild days so characteristic of the early fall.  In fact, we haven’t even been able to part with our decorative pumpkins or flowering mums.  Even our newly blooming roses are really confused, but they certainly are beautiful.  With a colder stretch expected later in the week, we wonder how many more of the buds will actually bloom before winter sets in.  No matter what the roses might indicate, the reality is that Thanksgiving is just around the corner and our famous Christmas Prelude a mere 12 days away.  Despite clinging on to autumn, our Christmas decorations are going up – and looking slightly ridiculous surrounded by flowers and pumpkin.

Even still, plans for Thanksgiving evening refreshments and Christmas cookies are in the works.  And since these 60 degree days surely won’t last forever, we are eagerly awaiting the installation of our exterior winter mudroom – not only will it help keep the snow from being tracked inside the house, but those nor’easter winds will stay right where they belong – outside.  So when visitors return after the new “Walk to Bethlehem” or the “Pooch Parade” during the second weekend of Christmas Prelude, they can lounge in the living room, enjoying a glowing fire without being disturbed by a breeze through the front door! But no matter what time of year you decide to visit Kennebunkport Maine, make sure to prepare for whatever Mother Nature might throw our way.  No matter what the weather forecast has in store, though, the natural beauty of this area is irrepressible.

A Thanksgiving Escape to Kennebunkport Maine

November 18th, 2011 by avadmin

Thanksgiving in Kennebunkport Maine is a particularly lovely time, and that sentiment is always shared by our turkey day visitors. One of my favorite things about Thanksgiving is getting to watch Kennebunkport prepare itself for Christmas Prelude.  This year seems to be a bit of a hoot, as the lights go up in and around our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast while the pumpkins sit atop

fall foliage in Kennebunkport Maine

Not sure these leaves are really screaming "Happy Holidays" but they sure are fun!

stoops, mums stand strong in the gardens, and simultaneously wreaths and pine boughs decorate homes.  Many of the trees still have leaves!  In fact, the Lower Village Kennebunk Fire Station has two stately trees outside, and this week the staff struggled to adorn their branches while fighting the hearty foliage. Granted, the leaves are mostly brown now, but they have still yet to hit the pavement, making this scene a riot to watch!

As you may know, I am a bit partial to Kennebunkport Maine at Thanksgiving, because it marked my very first introduction to this amazing community.  But indulge me – while checking out colleges during high school, my parents chose this classic New England village as the ideal “home base” for exploring Maine colleges.  And while I didn’t end up attending any of those institutions, we enjoyed our first Thanksgiving here so much that we planned a repeat the very next year.  It was the perfect opportunity to relax!  We sat by a gently glowing fire, reading books and playing games, enjoyed scenic walks along the ocean (yes, it is beautiful even at this time of year!), and perused the incredible shopping opportunities in town.  And, I must admit, we even hit up the outlet shops to knock off much of our Christmas shopping.  The best part, though, was getting to reconnect with each other.  So this year, whether you’re joining us solo, sans family, or with the whole clan in tow, you’re sure to enjoy a true respite.

Frankly, though, one of the best things about Kennebunkport Maine is the food, and Thanksgiving is no exception.  As usual, there are a plethora of incredible restaurants waiting to dish up an old fashioned turkey dinner with all the fixins or something Maine inspired (lobster, anyone?).  So here are some favorites that are still accepting Turkey Day reservations:

  • Pier 77 Restaurant – perfect for waterfront dining in Cape Porpoise
  • Grissini Restaurant – for Italian inspired fare in Lower Village Kennebunk
  • On the Marsh Bistro – intimate dining on the marsh, enough said.
  • One Dock – just steps from our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast
So here’s to a Happy Turkey Day, everyone – we all hope you enjoy a restful day wherever you might be!

The Kennebunkport Festival Draws to a Close

June 5th, 2011 by avadmin

The Kennebunkport Festival has brought much excitement to Kennebunkport Maine during the past five days, as food, wine, and fine art have filled this quaint New England community.  Held the week following Memorial Day, the

Kennebunkport Festival Art Show

Don't miss out on the amazing artwork around town during the Kennebunkport Festival!

Kennebunkport Festival is a wonderful way to kick off summer, and enjoy some of the things that make the area particularly unique as a vacation destination.

Some of the most popular events include the Art of Dining dinners held at some of the stunning private residences that dot the area, the chic After Parties, the Grand Tasting, and Brews and Tunes.  The Art of Dining dinners are hosted by incredible chefs, creating custom meals inspired by renowned area artists.  There’s plenty of opportunity to peep at these gorgeous homes, as well as admire the phenomenal artwork present for the evening (but I must admit that the oogling peaks my interest most!).

No matter where you choose to dine, you can take advantage of the rockin’ parties each night at some of the chicest spots in town.  Some of the hotspots this year were Bandaloop Restaurant and Stripers.  With signature cocktails, light apps and great music, the After Party is a great way to spend the evening in Kennebunkport Maine.

A gorgeous afternoon in Kennebunkport Maine

A spectacular afternoon!

On a gorgeous early summer afternoon, guests and residents alike visited the Colony Hotel, situated about a mile outside of downtown, to view an incredible display of artwork.  While there, many chose not to miss out on the Grand Tasting, with samples from over 60 restaurants and wineries.  Held on their poolside patio, it was the ideal venue for this event.  Casual mingling and noshing was the perfect way to spend an afternoon.  Back in Dock Square, hundreds headed to the marina for three hours of live music.  While burgers and beers were available (hence the name “Brews and Tunes”), many just enjoyed the perfect spring afternoon.

At our Kennebunkport Maine Bed and Breakfast, we’re already looking forward to next year’s Kennebunkport Festival, which is sure to be better than ever.

The Kennebunkport Festival is Here!

May 31st, 2011 by avadmin

So you’ve missed Day 1 of the Kennebunkport Festival, but it’s not too late to take part in some or all of the exciting events that make this week so special.  In fact, there’s still room in tomorrow’s “Art of Dining” intimate dinners.  Just

Their three and a half story spiral staircase makes ours look teeny!

steps from our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast lies the Samuel Stairs House.  This stunning manse was built in 1810 and boasts one of the tallest spiral staircases in New England (it’s three and a half stories high!).  Incredible as it might seem, the truly astounding detail is the preserved wallpaper smuggled into the United States during the Civil War.  So while you are enjoying the delectable creations of Kennebunkport’s very own Chef Gary Caron of Stripers Restaurant, make sure to take special note of this historic home.  Even though this building is still a private home (thank you, Longworth family for welcoming the Kennebunkport Festival!), you’ll enjoy the finest selection of wines from Hall Wines.  Not only will your palate be excited, but so will your eyes – on the works of Craig Mooney.  A renowned artist, Craig is featured in the Maine Art Gallery.

Not in the mood for such a formal event?  Don’t miss out on the After Party at Bandaloop Restaurant.  Always a favorite, it is sure to be hoppin’ tomorrow night.  For just $20, enjoy signature cocktails (and they are always amazing), appetizers, and live music.  Plus, there’s more artwork to be enjoyed by Pam DeSantis Tachibana.  Yep, the Kennebunkport Festival certainly is different than any other food and wine festival, and not just because it has the best location imaginable!  Artistic creations are one of the cornerstones of Kennebunkport Maine, and the festival has stayed true to its roots with the incorporation of substantial amounts of incredible artwork from primarily local artists.

Stay tuned, because there’s so much more to come in this year’s Kennebunkport Festival!

Surprise Birthday Getaway to a Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast

May 19th, 2011 by avadmin

Yesterday was my 24th birthday, which got me thinking about what an awesome surprise an escape to a Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast would be!  So I spent an inordinate amount of time today day-dreaming about what my perfect birthday vacation in Kennebunkport Maine would entail.  Here goes!

The room:  Now, I have an obsession with historical architecture, so I would want to stay in the main house (in case you’re curious, my favorite color is green – you can figure it out).  I also really like to talk with people, so I wouldn’t miss out on dining at the breakfast table with other guests.  However, if that wasn’t my thing, I would absolutely pick a

Perfect for a Picnic!

Cottage Suite with a double jacuzzi tub.  What girl doesn’t love a good soak?

The food:  Our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast is just steps from downtown, with passels of great restaurants.  I would definitely make reservations at my favorite spots for dinner, but would play lunchtime by ear.  Since I absolutely adore picnics, that would definitely be a must.  A variety of casual dining restaurants offer take out options, but there are also two excellent catering companies that have picnic-perfect goodies.  As far as dinner goes, I would definitely want to walk so that I could enjoy a celebratory cocktail.  Plus sunsets on the bridge are not to be missed.  So my picks would probably be for an “in-between” restaurant (one with amazing food, but where I could go in nice jeans or a cute dress depending on my mood… or the weather).

The plan:  The whole premise of our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast is to provide people with the kind of experience they want.  I would want to play outside!  That means long walks on the beach (I am not kidding) and through the historic district.  I would want to visit Laudholm Farm and stroll the Marginal Way.  And I have always wanted to explore Mount Agamenticus, where you can apparently see the ocean from the top of the hill!  But what I would really want is to be surprised, whether that means gourmet dessert delivered to my door, spectacular floral arrangements, or a getaway that kept me completely in the dark.

So that’s my idea of a perfect birthday getaway, but at our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast, we’re here to help make your birthday escape exactly what you need.

Forget flowers and treat Mom to a Kennebunkport Maine getaway this year!

Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast.  What more could a mom want?  We’ll bake the cookies, do all the cleaning (don’t worry, it will exceed even her standards), and serve her a gourmet breakfast.  A springtime visit to Kennebunkport Maine is sure to refresh any mom in your life.

So score a slam-dunk this year and make a reservation at a Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast (bring the kids or leave ‘em at home – if they’re still in the nest!).  We’ll start pampering that special lady from the second she walks through our door. While we help familiarize her with Kennebunkport Maine, we’ll treat her to delicious freshly baked cookies. Since spring has finally sprung, she might not be in the mood for a steaming cup of tea, but enough coffee to keep her going to explore Dock Square and our famous beaches.  Our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast is just steps from dozens of incredible dining spots, offering everything from “take-a-number” fried clams to elegant five star dining.  So no matter her tastes, we’ve got something for her.  You can relax in front of a glowing gas fireplace on a cool spring evening or watch the sunset from our wraparound porch.  A soak in one of our jacuzzi tubs might be just the thing she needs to unwind.

In the morning, our famous gourmet breakfast will be waiting.  Think she needs breakfast in bed?  Skip the kiddo’s attempt at scrambled eggs and cereal and have a piping hot plate delivered to your cottage suite in Kennebunkport Maine.  But if the mom in your life just can’t leave the little ones at home, bring them with you and enjoy a stress-free family outing!  So pack your bags and head to our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast this Mother’s Day.  But don’t worry – if you’ve already made plans for this weekend, Kennebunkport is an excellent place to visit at any point throughout the year.
