Every time someone visits our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast, we have a fantastic little book waiting for them on their bed.  It’s full of great photos of inns across the United States and Canada.  And despite the fact that we leave a note encouraging them to bring it home with them, sometimes folks forget to take it and sometimes there is simply not enough room in the suitcases.  Sometimes our little note gets overlooked, leaving people to think we’ve left them a coffee table book to peruse.  But now, everyone is sure to make some space for that little number, because inside lies the chance to win free visits to the best best bed and breakfasts across North America.  Yes, it’s here!  The 2012 Vacation Of A Lifetime from Select Registry Distinguished Inns. Spending Father’s Day at a Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast

June 16th, 2012 by Judi Hauer

I don’t know about you, but there are only a few things that my dad cares about on Father’s Day – good food, good beer, and good golf – and fortunately all three are things you can find in and around our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast.  And while I feel like I harp on it a lot while blogging, there is such great food in Kennebunkport!  Whether you’re looking for an elegant steak dinner or

Father's Day in Kennebunkport

A beautiful Father's Day weekend in Kennebunkport!

just a great burger, you’re certain to find a fantastic meal for every taste and every budget very nearby.  When it comes to beer, however, there are two places in particular that bear mentioning.  Federal Jack’s pumps house-made beers up from the Kennebunkport Brewing Company, located directly beneath them (along with other brands in bottles, cans, and kegs), and serves as the largest craft brewery in Maine.  But if imports are more his thing, Ryan’s Corner House is a great spot to check out for an assortment of brews served at an awesome bar with quite a variety of great Irish blends.  Plus, since both are walking distance to the Maine Stay Inn, he can imbibe without worrying about finding a DD!

Unfortunately, this year my dad didn’t get a chance to hit any balls, because, instead, he helped me clean and move to my new house!  But we still got in some quality father-daughter time, right?  Since Father’s Day isn’t quite here yet, I am holding out hope that he might be able to sneak in a round at one of the great area courses.  Both Webhannet Golf Course and the Cape Arundel Golf Course offer 18 holes and incredible views and even take reservations for non-members (though not more than a week in advance)! But if the kiddos are tagging along for this Father’s Day getaway, you might consider the par-3 course, called Hillcreast, or even one of the cute mini-golf courses in Wells like Wonder Mountain.  But no matter what Dad likes, he is sure to enjoy an escape to a Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast!

Historic Kennebunkport Inns Prepare For Garden Party

June 8th, 2012 by Judi Hauer

Tomorrow’s Garden Party is quickly approaching and a group of Historic Kennebunkport Inns are working ’round the clock (okay, maybe not quite!) to prepare for the parties!  And we’re no exception, which means that the gardens are groomed, the lawns mowed, and the kitchen is in high gear.  So tomorrow, instead of our traditional tea and warm, freshly baked cookies in the

afternoon, guests of the Maine Stay Inn can enjoy a teatime reminiscent of those across the pond and hop aboard a complimentary limo to explore the gardens and treats of other Historic Kennebunkport Inns.

But in case you can’t make it this weekend, I thought I would share a favorite recipe for lemon pound cake that is going to grace the tables tomorrow afternoon! So to make these at home, you’ll need:

  • 5 tablespoons softened butter
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 dash Kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon freshly grated lemon zest
  • 1 teaspoon pure lemon extract
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 2 eggs

In a mixing bowl, cream the sugar and butter until light and fluffy.  Then add the eggs, zest, and extract, and mix until fully blended.  Next, you’ll want to add half the milk and mix to combine, then add the dry ingredients.  Again, beat on low-medium until  combined, and finish by adding the last bit of milk.  Mix again.  Meanwhile, you’ll want to preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.  Once it’s preheated, coat two nonstick mini muffin tins with a non-stick spray or oil (not butter).  Using a mini ice cream scoop or melon baller, spoon batter into pans.  Bake about 10 minutes, or until edges are just browning and cakes are just set in the middle.  Remove from oven and invert onto rack (if you let them cool in the tins they will overcook – I learned the hard way).  Delectable by themselves, they are positively heavenly when topped with a dollop of fresh lemon curd!  Hope you enjoy this recipe and that the visitors to tomorrow’s Historic Kennebunkport Inns Garden Party do too!

Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast to Host Garden Tea Party

June 6th, 2012 by Judi Hauer

As part of this weekend’s Kennebunkport Festival festivities, our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast is getting ready to host a fun tea party in our backyard!  In addition to a variety of teas (both hot and chilled!), we’ll be bringing out lots of traditional teatime favorites. Think English inspired – miniature lemon pound cakes with fresh lemon curd, scones and oh-so-indulgent clotted cream,

and cucumber-mint sandwiches!  So guests will be able to soak up some rays while relaxing on the lawn and enjoying fun finger foods. Plus, guests of the Maine Stay Inn and the other Historic Inns of Kennebunkport can take advantage of complimentary limousine service between the inns.  In fact, each one will be hosting their own garden party, and each serving a different beverage (some, like us, serving teas for a light afternoon refresher, while others have chosen different wines as a pre-dinner cocktail session) along with tasty treats.

And given the spectacular weekend forecast, it’s sure to be an awesome event!  So not only will visitors have the opportunity to enjoy the great food and, of course, great company of other guests and staff members from each Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast, but it will be a fantastic chance to admire some of most historic and quintessentially New England spots in town.  Plus, with transportation provided, you won’t have a care in the world.  And because of this Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast garden party, you won’t have to worry about lunch!  Yes, breakfast has been planned to be especially hearty and will certainly carry you until the fun finger foods come out in the afternoon.  So hit the beach, enjoy the art galleries, or hit up the great boutiques in town, but whatever you do, don’t miss the Garden Parties!

Celebrating Mother’s Day in Kennebunkport Maine

Mother's Day Breakfast in Kennebunkport Maine

Judi's favorite sticky cinnamon buns are on the menu just for Mother's Day!

In Kennebunkport Maine, as with anywhere else in the nation, tomorrow is a big day – it’s Mother’s Day!  And for that reason, we have the pleasure of getting to know some amazing moms at our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast.  Some are being treated to a weekend away from the little tykes with a real breakfast in bed (not just a five-year-old’s version of pancakes), while others are being honored for doing such a good job raising their children years ago.  A few more are sporting large baby bumps and taking advantage of the opportunity to combine their babymoon with soon-to-be Mother’s Day Weekend.  But the most heartwarming of all are the guests being sent for a relaxing getaway in Kennebunkport Maine by their children as a special “thank you” to Mom for all of her hard work and dedication.  So while it might be a teeny bit to late to surprise that special mom in your life by spending Mother’s Day Weekend away, it certainly isn’t too late to show her just how much you care by planning a future getaway.  Seriously, though, what better way is there to show her how much you care than to give her the opportunity to rest, recharge and be pampered?!  Plus, with the wide assortment of excellent Kennebunkport restaurants, she won’t have to lift a finger for her entire stay.  From everyone at the Maine Stay, we wish all moms out there a happy Mother’s Day and hope to see you in Kennebunkport Maine!

Kennebunkport Hotels to Host Garden Party

Kennebunkport hotels garden party Kennebunkport festival 2012

Garden Party joins Kennebunkport Festival 2012 itinerary!

For many, the Kennebunkport Festival serves as the area’s official kick-off to summer, and this year instead of sponsoring an event, several small Kennebunkport hotels and inns have teamed up to host a progressive Garden Party.  Much like a “round robin” or progressive dinner, guests of the Historic Inns of Kennebunkport can enjoy a chauffeured tour of each of the unique gardens and lush lawns, and in a limo, no less!  Yes, a limo!  But while most of the inns are within close proximity, but a few require hopping in a car or on a bike, and these Kennebunkport hotels know that after a glass of wine or two, that might not be such a good idea.  So instead, we’re making sure you end up at your destination safely!

Because this great event will be held on the afternoon of June 9, 2012 (from about 3 to 6 for all of you planners out there), the gardens should be rich with flowers and foliage and temperatures ideal for lounging about.  Some of the inns will be serving complimentary wines and nibbles, while others, like the Maine Stay, will 0ffer a tea-tasting.  With warm and iced varieties of different blends and tea time treats (and not just our famous cookies!), the assortment will be ideal for a summer afternoon.  So mingle with visitors and innkeepers alike while resting up for an evening of Kennebunkport Festival activities at each of the participating Kennebunkport hotels and inns – it’s sure to be fun and worry-free!

Easter Dinner in Kennebunkport

April 8th, 2012 by Judi Hauer

While the streets of Kennebunkport were pretty quiet today, the dining room of many local restaurants were buzzing with activity.  Many visitors expressed their concern about finding the right spot their family’s Easter dinner, but also for just a burger or some

easter hyacinth

A hyacinth blooms just in time for Easter!

clam chowdah, so we did our best to quell their fears – Kennebunkport restaurants are open for business!  Yes, even on Easter Sunday!  Around the breakfast table this morning, guests and staff shared their plans for today, so I decided to share those plans with you.  And while some were indeed gearing up to hit the road and whip up their own Easter feast, others were letting someone else do the cooking, whether another family member or a restaurant chef.

Some of the “big winners” were the Cape Arundel Inn, Pier 77, and One Dock at the Kennebunkport Inn, but much to everyone’s surprise, Federal Jack’s Brew Pub also popped up on quite a few itineraries.  As usual, a fair number opted to indulge in an exquisite meal while drinking in an unspoiled view of the crashing surf at the Cape Arundel.  Perched atop a rocky slope, their airy dining room makes sure that every table has a view of the sea.  Others chose to go for a more peaceful view from the dining room at Pier 77, where the sheltered waters of Cape Porpoise Harbor reflect the sky (although cloudy today) and the picturesque lobster boats gently bobbing on the surface.  And quite a few more, myself included, decided to forgo the views in lieu of testing out the waters at the newly redesigned One Dock.  After the magnificent meal in the fresh, nautical dining room, a short stroll through Dock Square and up Ocean Avenue was all that I needed!  Its laid-back atmosphere was much needed after a busy morning to make sure all the staff of our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast could get home for dinner with their families, and the delightful (and indulgent) meal was just what the doctor ordered.

The surprise of the day, however, was that quite a few visitors decided that an elegant Easter dinner was not in their cards, and headed to Federal Jack’s for a burger and fries or fish n’ chips!  But that just goes to show you that Kennebunkport has something for everyone – even on Easter!

Celebrating Easter at a Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast

April 6th, 2012 by Judi Hauer

Easter is a joyous time of year, whether for religious reasons or for the rebirth and reawakening of nature during the springtime, but one of the most exciting parts is getting to share the day with people spending their first holiday away from home at a

Kennebunkport's iconic South Church is just around the corner!

Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast.  I think of it as especially exciting, because my first experience in Kennebunkport was also for a holiday (although mine was Thanksgiving), so it seems natural that they too might fall in love with this community and its spectacular location in coastal Southern Maine.  Maybe they’ll become our neighbors!  But as excited as I get for Easter weekend, visitors are just as nervous about finding place to worship.  Don’t worry, though, we’ve got it covered!

No matter your denomination, you’re sure to find the right place for you to worship on Easter Sunday.  Several congregations sit just around the corner from our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast.  Village Baptist Church lies about half a dozen houses away on Maine Street, and if you walk a few doors further, you’ll hit United Church of Christ’s South Church (rather ironically located on North Street).  Continuing on a little further, you’ll find the First Congregational Church.  Presbyterian visitors might find a home at St. Andrew’s on Route 1 in Kennebunk.  Nearby, you’ll find St. Martha’s, a Catholic congregation.  And offering a spiritual contrast, it’s nearest neighbor is the Unitarian Universalist congregation.  Sometimes, though, guests of our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast choose to worship slightly differently than they typically would, with a visit to the Franciscan Monastery.  Though traditional Catholic mass is given, the atmosphere is notably different than many churches, as the facility is run by Lithuanian monks.  However, the grounds are spectacular and especially on a religious holiday when many desire a connection to the blossoming natural world, the 7o riverside acres often call.  But this list is hardly exhaustive, so if I’ve left something out (and you can be sure I have!), anyone at our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast is happy to help you find the perfect spot for you to celebrate Easter in the area.

A Presidential Getaway in Kennebunkport, ME

February 18th, 2012 by Judi Hauer

Although February 14th has come and gone, many people are keeping the mood alive and taking advantage of the long weekend for Presidents’ Day to do their Valentine’s celebrating, and what better place than Kennebunkport, ME for a truly presidential retreat?  Many people may be surprised, but on my very first visit to Kennebunkport, I had no idea that this was the summer retreat of our 41st and 43rd

Bush Family home in Kennebunkport, ME

What a view! Thank you to one of our very special guests for use of this photo taken during her visit to Kennebunkport, ME

Presidents!  So for those of you who didn’t realize that the Bush Family compound is located just 2 miles from our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast, you’re not alone.  And for those of you who think you might find another first family here, you’ll find Camelot about three hours to our south – not too far for a day trip!

While the Bush family is not in Kennebunkport, ME at this time of year, their estate still sits pretty atop a rocky peninsula just down the street.  No matter the time of year, it’s a great walk out there for some sightseeing and gawking at the incredible “cottages” that flank our coastline.  And Parson’s Way, a path along our famous Ocean Avenue, boasts some of the prettiest stretches of Maine Coastline around (that’s my opinion, folks).  So it’s time to get in the spirit of Presidents’ Day week by dining in style at some of the Bush family’s favorite digs.  For a casual lunch, the seniors have often been spotted at The Ramp, a Kennebunkport, ME version of a “sports bar” – but it’s excellent, though eclectic, cuisine would lead you to think that description might not be accurate.  Guests have also reported that Barbara enjoys a fun, fresh dinner at Bandaloop, usually with girlfriends in tow – sorry, George, we’ve gotta have girl time!  But most frequently we hear of Presidential sightings at Cape Arundel Inn’s fine dining restaurant, which is no surprise given its location.  The open and airy dining room overlooks the inlet and entire Bush compound, plus it’s just around the corner – they could walk if the secret service let them.  But just like you, the former first family likes to lie low during their visits to Kennebunkport, ME, so this week, kick up your heels and relax at our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast.

A Happy Valentine’s Day in Kennebunkport Maine

Inns for valentine's day getaways to kennebunkport maine

Especially for Valentine's Day - don't you?!

Love was certainly in the air this Valentine’s Day in Kennebunkport Maine, and the Maine Stay was no exception!  We started off the day with a festive breakfast, dishing up our signature crustless quiche with steaming raspberry muffins and homemade cranberry applesauce, though I must admit that my attempts to form it into little hearts was a bit of a flop.  Couples gathered around the table in our Kennebunkport Maine Bed and Breakfast, and they all really seemed to hit it off, even sharing how long they’ve been together (of course I’ll spill the beans – they ranged from still dating to married for well over 3o years).  But while some chose to be social, others preferred to spend Valentine’s Day enjoying breakfast in bed (and considering the chilly temps this morning, I was a little envious!).  To banish the cold after a long afternoon walk, guests shared their “excess” candy (does such a thing actually exist?) and we enjoyed steaming mugs of cocoa with whipped cream shaped into hearts – can you tell I love Valentine’s?

In my mind, however, the best part is helping visitors figure out what Kennebunkport Maine Restaurant is going to make their evening exactly as they imagined.  This year, though, people really were planners, and, quite surprisingly, many dining reservations had already been made.  So it was easy to tell that the big winners today were Bandaloop, 50Local, and On the Marsh.  Now, there’s no judgement there – those were just the most popular one guests selected for dining tonight.  This might actually be the first time that none of our Valentine’s diners chose to head to the White Barn Inn, and instead opted for one of the lower key establishments that make Kennebunkport Maine what it is.  Later, however, when I looked into dinner reservations for myself, I was pleased to find quite a few places were fully booked.  Just another reason to book your Kennebunkport Maine Bed and Breakfast reservations early!  But as Valentine’s Day draws to a close, the guests are discovering the allure of our whirlpool tubs and romance of our many glowing gas fireplaces.  Happy Valentine’s Day from Kennebunkport Maine!
