Maine Bed and Breakfast Gets a Facelift

April 14th, 2012 by Judi Hauer

It’s not too often that you walk into a Maine Bed and Breakfast and see a “please excuse our appearance – we’re under construction (to improve your experience, of course!)” sign in the entryway, but at the Maine Stay, there have been a few times in the past few

years.  Frankly, with all of the massive changes and improvements, that experience could certainly have happened much more often.  Fortunately, most of our changes have gone according to plan, and unlike typical home renovations, our timeframes haven’t gotten too stretched out.  But then we decide to do something crazy – like totally overhaul the living room at the spur of the moment.  As in right now.  Yes, I said it.  And this living room is going to change, so say bye-bye cranberry red and forest green entry, because the wallpaper is comin’ down (actually it came down on Friday morning, hence the “under construction” note our current visitors are really taking in stride).  Starting right after breakfast on Monday morning, it’s going to be replaced with a soothing blue.  Now, I am not going to leak too many details of our new design plan for several reasons: 1) not everything has arrived, so some of the details aren’t quite ironed out (hey, I have always been one for honesty!), 2) photographer Christian Giannelli will return to our Maine Bed and Breakfast later this spring and do it far more justice than I can with my dinky iPhone camera, and 3) we want you to come enjoy it yourself!  But the main goal of this latest project (which should be mostly completed and totally functional by the end of this week) is to lighten things up and make the living room a bit more relaxed.  So stay tuned, because our new living room is sure to become one of your new favorite rooms at the Maine Stay – we can’t wait to share the updates!

Honeymooning at a Maine Bed and Breakfast

April 1st, 2012 by avadmin

If you’re looking for a romantic Maine bed and breakfast to celebrate your honeymoon, look no further than the Maine Stay Inn!  Kennebunkport is an incredible wedding destination, speckled with charming chapels, intimate coves, quiet beaches, and, of course, romantic Maine bed and breakfasts!  Many of our honeymooners enjoy traditional vacation activities like visiting our

spectacular beaches, taking scenic strolls, and going whale watching.  But just as often they put an intimate, romantic twist on things.  Think sunset Schooner rides, horse-drawn carriage tours, ocean-front picnics, and candle-lit dinners.  The possibilities are endless and make for an unforgettable getaway to start off your life together!

The Maine Stay has rooms and suites for any style and taste, but a few are particularly popular with homeymooners.  For those looking for a more traditional bed and breakfast experience the Deluxe Fireplace Suite #12 is incredibly popular.  Enjoy a gas fireplace, jacuzzi tub, and Victorian opulence in this spacious suite on the first floor of the main house.  Those preferring Contemporary decor often lean toward Romantic Cottage Suite #2 with its crisp, clean lines, warm neutral tones, and modern fixtures.  The California King bed, gas fireplace and jacuzzi tub certainly help kick the romance up a notch.  Plus, here you can have breakfast delivered right to your door!  Our most recently renovated suite, Romantic Cottage Suite #5, is sure to quickly become a top choice for couples honeymooning at our Maine Bed and Breakfast.  Falling somewhere between contemporary and traditional in style, there’s no way but to relax once inside – California King bed with a custom-made headboard, plush sofa, and gas fireplace grace the main room, while the spa-inspired bathroom suite offers a large shower with body jets and a double whirlpool tub with a television strategically placed to watch while soaking (not to worry, there’s a second television in the bedroom).  No matter what you choose, however, options abound for honeymooners in a Maine Bed and Breakfast!

Maine Bed and Breakfast’s Good Samaritan

March 24th, 2012 by Judi Hauer

A few weeks ago one of the newest members of our Maine Bed and Breakfast staff arrived late to cook breakfast. Oh boy, we all thought. What’s going on with her?  Is she going to show up?  Breakfast is, after all, kind of a big deal at the Maine Stay.  A multi-breakfast at Maine Bed and Breakfastcourse gourmet breakfast doesn’t just cook itself, let alone serve itself to hungry visitors.  But before we could get too worried, Ashley hurried in, explaining that she had just witnessed a car accident and got out to help the driver.  Now who could find fault with that?  Not us!  Throughout the day, Ashley seemed a bit distracted, but given our early start, her jam-packed college course load, and two young (and very active) boys at home, we chalked it up to “life.”

We know Ashley to be a great mom, diligent student, and team player in this Maine Bed and Breakfast, but we hadn’t quite yet realized what bravery she possessed and strength in a traumatic situation.  But a reporter at the Portland Press Herald helped bring it to our attention and we couldn’t be more proud!  For the full story and pictures of the emotional reunion between Ashley and the accident victim, click here.  Nevertheless, we’re so pleased that Ashley acted on her instincts and reached out to a person in need.  Others would surely (and a fair many did) drive right past the scene, hurrying toward their jobs, but instead of worrying about serving up breakfast at a Maine Bed and Breakfast, Ashley reached out and touched  another person.  This story has brought all of us such joy, so we wanted to share this great tale with you.

Why Try a Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast?

March 4th, 2012 by Judi Hauer

take a chance on a Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast

Ask questions and take a chance - try a Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast!

Every day at our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast brings interesting people through our door, each with their own story and background, and sometimes we have the fortune to listen to a small part (and occasionally a large one!) of that tale.  It’s one of my favorite things about being an innkeeper.  But this weekend and I learned about our visitors, I discovered that more than a few had something unusual (or maybe not so unusual) in common – this was their first Bed and Breakfast experience.  Luckily enough, I got to “pick their brains” about what had held them back and what made them try a B&B for this getaway.  So why should you try a bed and breakfast?

  • They’re not actually intimidating.  There’s this misconception about BnBs that the innkeepers are hovering cat-ladies that are going to constantly disturb you, reminding you to leave room for the “Holy Ghost” (middle school dance flashbacks, anyone?).  And guess what?  There really aren’t rules that you need to be concerned about.  Well, aside from the please-don’t-burn-the-place-down and call-911-in-case-of-an-emergency kind of rules…
  • There are ways to ensure quality.  Sure, every Hampton Inn or Embassy Suites you visit is going to be more or less exactly the same, and you’re never going to get that with B&Bs, but membership in the Select Registry is as sure a way as any to guarantee a good experience.  A group of about 400 distinguished inns in North America, each property undergoes a rigorous inspection to make certain that guests will enjoy a quality product.
  • They don’t have to be that social.  If you want to go to your room right away, no problem.  If you’re content to figure out on your own where to dine and what to do, at our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast we’re good with that.  And if dining at a table or in the same room with others is a turn-off, we’ll happily deliver a gourmet breakfast to your very own Cottage Suite.  If you’re still nervous, think about traveling with another couple you are friends with – they’ll make you at ease and you’ll have someone you know to socialize with.

Those were the three big concerns about trying a BnB that travelers expressed, and, as expected, their misconceptions were proven wrong, so next time you are in need of a quick getaway, think about giving a Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast a try!

Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast Goes Social

March 1st, 2012 by Judi Hauer

It is a common misconception that B&Bs reside in the “dark ages,” but with our attention to social media, this Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast is proving that wrong!  Honestly, though, anyone who doesn’t live with their head in the sand knows that social

media is not going away (thank goodness, because what would I do without it?!), so embracing it is key.  It’s been rather challenging to convince Walter of this, but even he is considering getting an iPhone and learning about Twitter.  He really has come a long way from the days of telling me that Twitter was the number one way people put viruses on your computer!  Uh huh, Dad, I really believe you.  Just like you thought AIM was when I was in middle school.

Now, everyone gets why Facebook works for them.  You can spy on your first crush, your ex-best friend, and your long lost relatives with complete ease, all the while keeping up with that party you missed last month or pictures from your bff’s wedding.  But why would a Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast be interested?  Because of you, that’s why!  Facebook is a great way for us to keep you posted on what’s new in our neck of the woods without invading your Inbox every few days or, even worse, chopping down trees and filling your mailbox with updates on new paint colors.  Even better, you can stay in touch without hearing what flavor of ice cream I enjoyed for dessert!

But we try to make it easy to stay in touch with us, no matter what realm you prefer.  That means you can StumbleUpon us, or Digg one of our blogs.  You can find us on Facebook, or add us to a circle on Google+.  Stay super current by following us on Twitter.  And most recently we’ve set up our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast on Pinterest, where you can see pictures of our rooms and suites, recipes we want to try, products we use lots (and love), and design inspiration for projects around the inn.  So now that you know we’re tuned in, drop us a line and say hello!

Updates at Our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast

February 22nd, 2012 by Judi Hauer

The winter months are a time period when we devote lots of time and energy to updating our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfastand this year has been no exception.  Of course, we do lots of little things, like fixing the chipped paint in each and every guest room (the vacuums do such a number on our baseboards!), fixing any loosening wallpaper seams, replacing welcome mats that have seen better days.  We move furniture and reorganize until the cows come home.  To make sure every sheet and towel lives up to our

high standards, we rigorously examine them, just to ensure that none have escaped our watchful eyes in the laundry.  So our days are just jam-packed getting our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast in ship-shape.

We’re all pretty excited about the technological changes happening here, too.  Yes, the Maine Stay has definitely kept current, but we just don’t think that’s quite good enough for our guests!  So this winter we upgraded our WiFi system, adding bandwidth, relocating our external antenna, and making sure that everyone can access the web from anywhere on the property.  That means that this summer you’ll be able to stream video from Netflix or Hulu from a hammock in the backyard and not worry about whether the afternoon breeze is going to disrupt your signal.  And as more and more travelers are visiting with iPads, we’ve switched from providing iPod docking stations in the rooms to ones that can accommodate your tablet as well!  Plus, we are finally ready to say farewell to the very last tub television at our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast.  While it may seem like a small change, swapping out old fashioned TVs for the flat panel kind in all 17 guest rooms is quite an undertaking.  It’s actually meant rewiring the cable and rebuilding walls!  Then there are the big projects, our full on renovations and major design projects – stay tuned for this winter’s makeovers.  But sometimes a change you think is small turns out to be monumental.  For example, last week a new mattress and box spring arrived for Romantic Cottage Suite 3, and instead of reordering a queen, we decided to upgrade to a California King.  But what, then, does one do about the bed?  So we called upon local craftsperson, Tom Joyal, the owner of Old House Parts, for help expanding the bed.  Boy, did he ever do a fabulous job!  So now, not only can you enjoy a romantic getaway in a suite with a king bed, double whirlpool tub, and breakfast delivered right to your door, but you’d never know that we “stretched” a queen bed into a king!  Stay tuned for pictures of this remarkable change, and more updates from our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast as we complete our winter projects and don’t forget to let us know what you think!

Where Do Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfasts Get Flowers?

February 13th, 2012 by Judi Hauer

As we all know, Valentine’s Day seems almost synonymous with floral arrangements, and the need for flowers at Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfasts is perhaps even greater than most.  Fortunately for us, though, there are ample florists located just a stone’s throw from the inn. Fleurant, a combination home-good and floral shop, is conveniently located in Lower Village Kennebunk.  While you wait for your exotic potted plant or cut flowers to be arranged and packaged for travel, you’ll surely keep yourself occupied by admiring the unique ideas for the home or oogling at the great, funky jewelry that abounds. Or if you find that you aren’t in any hurry, pop next door for a pick-me-up at Old Vines Wine Bar(don’t worry, they serve excellent sodas and tapas style entrees too!).   A little further outside of town lies a shop called Blooms and Heirlooms.  About five miles from the historic Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfasts, Blooms and Heirlooms sits unassumingly along US route 1.  Event and special occasion orders are something B&H

Because sometimes this just won't do!

handles easily, but my favorite part of their store is the wall of windows and door that allow you to look into their cooler and create your own floral arrangements.  With convenient delivery options, this shop is a favorite of lots of locals.

Most often, though, a change of pace is required and a truly spectacular display of unique flowers and inventive vegetative accents is needed (or just desired), and for that we turn to Calluna Fine Flowers located in Ogunquit Maine. Unfortunately for us and guests of the Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfasts, she does operate seasonally, which means that for some of the winter period (though Valentine’s is usually an exception), Calluna’s incredible arrangements are unavailable.  But the hidden perk of an extended hiatus means that anticipation for her creations builds throughout the winter, leading up to a joyful springtime reopening.  And when you’re looking for just a little pop of color to brighten up your table, try one of our local farms.  During the summer months, the plethora of small farms in the area allows for creative folks to assemble their own bouquets with locally grown flowers and support community agriculture.  In fact, at our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast, we often participate in CSA flower programs to help keep these farms going strong!  So with all these options, don’t let Valentine’s Day craziness paralyze your flower-shopping attempts, because there are so many great places to find just the right arrangement in Kennebunkport Maine!

Privacy at a Maine Bed and Breakfast? Got it!

February 8th, 2012 by Judi Hauer

It never fails to surprise me when someone enquiring about our Maine Bed and Breakfast asks about privacy.  Honestly, that’s never something we have to worry about at the Maine Stay, partially because of the construction and layout of the property.  Somewhere along the line, though, BnBs got a bad rap in that department, and I just can’t figure out where.  Granted I know my parents stayed at a variety of glorified bunkhouses passing themselves off as bed and breakfasts in the 1970s, but those haven’t existed in decades!

breakfast at our Maine Bed and Breakfast

Imagine breakfast delivered to your door!

So here’s the reality of this Maine Bed and Breakfast: all private baths and no one breathing down your neck.  We’re very lucky that some phenomenal shipbuilders crafted our house, because the walls are very thick.  Now, if you’ve been inside the Maine Stay, you know that the kitchen and front office are right next to one another and that both are teeny tiny.  But when I’m in the kitchen, there is no way on earth I could hear someone in the office.  It’s only a bad thing when someone’s waiting in the hall and are too bashful to poke their heads into the kitchen to ask for help!  Fortunately for you (and for us) that’s not an exception.  So cross noise off your silly “Reasons I don’t do B&Bs” list.  I can almost guarantee that you’ll hear more of your neighbors in a hotel than a Maine Bed and Breakfast where everyone dedicates themselves to making your stay to be perfect.

Often, however, people worry about being pestered by Auntie Sue, leaving room for the holy ghost, or finding her missing cat.  That’s about as far from our reality as you can get.  While we do greet every guest personally (unless they have made arrangements for a late check-in), we take our cues from you.  Some people wants lots of time to socialize and get to know the staff, while others want just the basics and to be on their way.  Either is A-okay with us!  Honestly!  If you want help finding the perfect place to eat, hike, antique, and sightsee while relaxing over a cup of tea – any of us are more than happy to oblige.  If you’d rather just snag the WiFi password and head to your abode, that’s fine too!

But if you’re still feeling anxious, a good way to test the waters is in one of our Cottage Suites.  Not only can you have breakfast delivered and not worry about making small talk across the dining room table (though we’d happily set extra seats for you or help arrange a quieter time to eat if you want to stay in the main house), but you can enjoy it in bed if you want!  Plus here there’s never anyone in a room above or below you, and could only have one (or two if you are in Cottage Suite 2) neighbor.  And you’ll never be headboard-to-headboard with any other space – how great is that?  So now there’s no excuse – it’s time to plan your getaway to a Maine Bed and Breakfast and experience just how private and relaxing they can be!

Healthy and Delicious Breakfasts at our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast

January 13th, 2012 by avadmin

Although January might be National Diet Month, at our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast, we would rather start the year off right with healthy (and delectable) gourmet breakfasts that will leave you begging for more.  Every morning we include some kind of fresh fruit starter, using as much local produce as possible.  Granted, the Maine winters are not exactly conducive to growing lots of fresh fruits, but the fall’s plentiful harvest of local apples is still filling the shelves and stockrooms of Kennebunkport Maine grocery stores and food suppliers.  Fortunately, several local growers also raise strawberries in greenhouses that, while smaller than their summer counterparts, are just as delightful!  So you’ll wake up in our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast to a wholesome serving (or more) of fresh fruit.

One of our favorite recipes that will be sure to keep your waistline in check is Sauteed Spinach and Grape Tomatoes with Poached Eggs.  To prepare for this hearty and healthy morning meal, mince a clove of fresh garlic as finely as possible.  Gently warm 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a nonstick frying pan.  When it gets hot, add the garlic, along with a generous amount of freshly ground black pepper.  Then add grape tomatoes, sliced lengthwise – usually allowing 4-5 whole tomatoes per person.  Cook just until the

garlic is fragrant and tomatoes are beginning to release their juices.  Remove from heat and transfer to a small bowl.  In the same pan, quickly and very lightly saute fresh baby spinach, until just barely wilted.  Allow at least 3 ounces of spinach per person.  If you can’t fit all of it in the pan, allow parts to cook before adding more, producing spinach with varying levels of doneness.  Meanwhile, bring a pan of water to a simmer.  Add a few generous glugs of colorless vinegar before sliding eggs into the water.  Cook until whites are set and yolks still liquid (Voile! A poached egg!).  On a plate, top spinach with warm tomatoes and a few shavings of parmesan cheese, followed by two eggs and a twist of ground black pepper.  Serve with lean ham, freshly baked whole grain bread and you’ve got a delicious, nutritious, and resolution-friendly breakfast!  It’s never the same as when it is served to you at our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast, but with this recipe you’re sure to come close!

Karen Brown and Our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast

November 28th, 2011 by avadmin

Although many visitors to our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast arrive on the recommendation of Karen Brown and her New England Guidebook, many others have never heard of this valuable travel resource.  Honestly, it wasn’t obvious to me why so many choose to rely on Karen Brown’s expertise for guidance

Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast in Karen Brown Guidebook

Our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast is featured in Karen Brown's New England Guidebook

when planning trips both within the United States and abroad.  All that changed recently, when I had the opportunity to speak personally with Karen and to actually read one of her books.  I can’t believe what great advice she has for planning the perfect New England tour, as well as travels across the globe.

It can often be overwhelming to plan a trip to an entirely unfamiliar area, especially with recent explosion of online review sites (with widely varying degrees of reliability), booking sites, and travel blogs.  Who is a traveler to trust?  A trip planner for 35 years, Karen Brown has written 17 guides to Europe, Mexico, and the United States, never once accepting or soliciting payment for her services.  She has actually visited every establishment she recommends, including our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast.  In order to keep up with today’s virtual culture, Karen Brown’s World of Travel provides extremely helpful information about lodging, restaurants, and attractions – though I must admit, the level of detail available in her books more than justifies the purchase price (e-reader users, rejoice – Karen Brown is soon to debut the new virtual version of the guidebooks).

Although the Internet can be a great resource for directions, Karen Brown will make sure you don’t miss out on the sights and attractions along the way.  Sure, weather.com can tell you the forecast for your destination of choice, but Karen Brown will even translate that into appropriate packing suggestions.

Karen Brown’s New England Guidebook does such a wonderful job of portraying the area around our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast, but it is the careful suggestions and detailed itineraries for travel throughout New England for which I am most grateful.  Congratulations, Karen, for producing such a quality product and thank you again for selecting the Maine Stay Inn as one of your choice destinations!
