Taking the Train to Maine

It may seem a little crazy, but one of my favorite things is taking the train, so I remember being absolutely delighted when I found out that the Amtrak Downeaster is a line that lets folks take the train to Maine!  So whether you’re car-less, looking to reduce your carbon footprint, or just in the mood to sit back and let someone else do the driving, there is a great option that brings travelers from Boston (and beyond) through coastal New Hampshire into Maine.  And best of all, you never have to worry about traffic!  Boston’s North Station is accessible from major highways and the MBTA lines, which means that it’s easy to grab your bags and head north.  I tend to fall asleep on trains since I find them so relaxing, so I always have to be careful not to miss my stop!  Fortunately the conductors give my shoulder a little shake as we get closer to the Wells, Maine stop if I have nodded off.  But those who aren’t able to sleep during their travels, there is a great dining car and plenty of windows to watch the New England landscape pass you by.

All aboard! Hop the Amtrak Downeaster for a train trip to Maine!

Once you’ve arrived in Wells, just a few miles down the road from the Maine Stay Inn, you have lots of options for getting to your getaway destination.  Some people hop aboard the seasonal trolley system that brings them right to Dock Square, while others flag a cab.  Some call a local car service called HydiDrive or arrange a package deal including shuttle service, train tickets, and accommodation by calling our front desk directly.  And the even more ambitious bring their bikes and pedal their way around these beautiful Maine communities – and while that’s not for everyone, it is certainly a phenomenal way to truly experience all that Southern Maine has to offer!  Plus, you can eat as many lobster rolls and whoopie pies without worrying about your waistline!  But no matter when you visit Kennebunkport Maine, taking the train to Maine is a great option!
