Superstorm Sandy Spares Kennebunkport

Watching the news today, all of us at the Maine Stay Innhave realized just how lucky we are to have been spared by the wrath of Superstorm Sandy.  Along with all of coastal New England, we braced ourselves for a strong battering, expected to bring unprecedented winds and rain to the area, but as the storm’s path grew more certain, warnings eased in the Kennebunkport area,

You can bet the Kennebunkport coastline wasn’t looking quite this peaceful during Monday’s encounter with Superstorm Sandy!

and no mandatory evacuations were imposed, even in low-lying areas like Kennebunk Beach.  Forecasters predicted the winds to be worse than those experienced just over a year ago during Hurricane Irene, and they were right!  Last year, we took a walk along the beach to experience the sights of surf ferociously pounding the coastline, but this time, winds were so strong we hunkered down safely tucked inside our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast.  But if you want to see a hint of the surf we experienced before the height of the storm, you can check out the footage from local TV station, WMTW here.

But while the storm mostly downed tree limbs and ripped the remaining foliage from the branches, we escaped unscathed – with one small exception.  The top of one of our outdoor lamp posts blew off!  A thoughtful guest retrieved it for us, but, alas, it’s destined for the recycling.  The kiddos are really in luck – all these fallen leaves won’t be cleaned up before Trick Or Treating time tomorrow night, so it will really add to the spooky ambience of Halloween!  All kidding aside, though, Kennebunkport is so fortunate to have been spared from the destruction and severe flooding that other coastal areas in the Northeast are experiencing.  Our thoughts and prayers are with those who weren’t so lucky and are now facing the daunting task of cleaning up after the wake of Superstorm Sandy.
