Every day at our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast brings interesting people through our door, each with their own story and background, and sometimes we have the fortune to listen to a small part (and occasionally a large one!) of that tale. It’s one of my favorite things about being an innkeeper. But this weekend and I learned about our visitors, I discovered that more than a few had something unusual (or maybe not so unusual) in common – this was their first Bed and Breakfast experience. Luckily enough, I got to “pick their brains” about what had held them back and what made them try a B&B for this getaway. So why should you try a bed and breakfast?
- They’re not actually intimidating. There’s this misconception about BnBs that the innkeepers are hovering cat-ladies that are going to constantly disturb you, reminding you to leave room for the “Holy Ghost” (middle school dance flashbacks, anyone?). And guess what? There really aren’t rules that you need to be concerned about. Well, aside from the please-don’t-burn-the-place-down and call-911-in-case-of-an-emergency kind of rules…
- There are ways to ensure quality. Sure, every Hampton Inn or Embassy Suites you visit is going to be more or less exactly the same, and you’re never going to get that with B&Bs, but membership in the Select Registry is as sure a way as any to guarantee a good experience. A group of about 400 distinguished inns in North America, each property undergoes a rigorous inspection to make certain that guests will enjoy a quality product.
- They don’t have to be that social. If you want to go to your room right away, no problem. If you’re content to figure out on your own where to dine and what to do, at our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast we’re good with that. And if dining at a table or in the same room with others is a turn-off, we’ll happily deliver a gourmet breakfast to your very own Cottage Suite. If you’re still nervous, think about traveling with another couple you are friends with – they’ll make you at ease and you’ll have someone you know to socialize with.
Those were the three big concerns about trying a BnB that travelers expressed, and, as expected, their misconceptions were proven wrong, so next time you are in need of a quick getaway, think about giving a Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast a try!
