Though a light summer drizzle has barely begun, Irene’s visit to the Eastern Seaboard and Kennebunkport Mainehas got us thinking about the best activities for a rainy evening. While some guests may choose delivery or take-out for dinner, others will choose waterfront dining to enjoy views of crashing surf during their evening meal. But when a starry walk
along the beach or a backyard snuggle in the hammock is out, here are some ideas for enjoying your visit despite some precipitation.
One of my personal favorite things to do on a rainy night is hit the theater – movie or musical. Two local theaters, the Ogunquit Playhouse and the Arundel Barn Playhouse, offer great selections of musical theater nearly every night of the week. Though the Arundel Barn only offers shows during the summer months, the Ogunquit Playhouse runs shows through October. Both feature incredible performers and well-known productions within a short drive of our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast. If you’re in search of something a little more Hollywood than Broadway, there are three nearby cinemas. The Wells Five Star Cinema is less than a ten minute drive and, in addition to convenience, offers relatively inexpensive ticket prices. Plus, the discount stores next door make a great stop for snacks before the show. A newer and larger theater (Cinemagic in Saco, ME) sits a short drive to our north, and even offers iMax movies! But slightly closer to Kennebunkport lies Smitty’s Cinema in Biddeford, ME that isn’t your average movie theater. Serving dinner and drinks to tables inside the theater is one of the most unique (and fun!) features – plus it’s perfect for doing double-duty on date night! Guests looking for a lower key evening might choose instead to check out a film from our library and hunker down for the night.
While many guests choose to snuggle up by a glowing fire (though with during a tropical storm that’s unlikely to hold much appeal) with a good book or a great game (Scrabble, anyone?), others prefer their activities on the more social side. Recently visitors to Kennebunkport Maine decided to tackle a challenging puzzle in our dining room. Over the course of several hours, word got out, and many couples and families decided to join in the fun. Because puzzle-ing rarely fits into daily life, the owners donated this one to our collection, which means you’ve got some great options for a rainy evening! And if puzzles aren’t your thing, make sure to check out our assortment of games and books.
But, best of all, Kennebunkport Maine is a beautiful and vibrant community no matter the weather, so grab your umbrella (or borrow one of ours!) and raincoat, and head outside! The magnificent coastline is stunning during a storm, and the historic area homes are prime for admiring. Plus the shops and restaurants hold every bit as much (if not more) appeal when the weather’s iffy as when the sun is shining!
