In the land of whoopie pies and lobster rolls, it may seem like eating gluten-free might be impossible, but Kennebunkport Maine abounds with great options for gluten free guests – starting at our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast. Since I have been gluten free for over a decade, my family is well versed in GF cooking. But I’ll be honest, my dad, Walter, is still not entirely a pro (yes, he still comes home with non GF treats and says proudly, “Look what I
brought you!”), so it’s best to make sure you talk with one of the ladies at the Maine Stay.
The morning meal at our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast is not always gluten-free, but because I love to eat too, we are happy to make nearly everything Celiac-friendly – as long as you give us ample warning! And a reminder at check-in is always appreciated. In short, we’ve got you covered when it comes to gluten free breakfasts in Kennebunkport Maine.
But what about your other daily meals? If you’re looking for a sit-down lunch spot, try Federal Jack’s BrewPub. As the largest restaurant in Kennebunkport Maine, this might not seem like a natural choice, but the chefs are well versed in what contains gluten. But make sure you’re emphatic with your server, and if you are uncomfortable with their knowledge, ask to speak with one of the chefs. One quick tip – if you’re ordering a salad, ask for dressing on the side. My personal favorite lunchtime destinations are actually not restaurants, but they are ideal places to pick up great gluten free food for a picnic! Both Cape Porpoise Kitchen and Market Day are catering companies with delectable offerings of prepared food. Try the basil and grape chicken salad on top of fresh greens from Market Day or any of the salads and slaw at Cape Porpoise Kitchen (which also keeps GF desserts on hand in their freezer case!). Both are conveniently located a short distance from our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast and on your way to the area’s amazing beaches!
At dinner you’ll have a plethora of options, as (like in most places) all restaurants are becoming more food allergy sensitive. Bandaloop Restaurant is a personal favorite when it comes to menu choices, but is also top of the list for gluten awareness. Many entrees are served over rice and usually most, if not all, of their delectable sauces are prepared gluten free. Plus, it’s just steps (I mean literally about 9 houses) from our Kennebunkport Bed and Breakfast. Joshua’s Restaurant in Wells, ME is definitely worth the 10 minute drive from Kennebunkport Maine. They too are fully aware of the considerations of gluten free dining and will take great care of you. The Kennebunk Inn, slightly off the beaten path in downtown Kennebunk, is a low key spot that offers a great selection, excellent food, and reasonable prices – I eat here confidently at least once a week. But if you’re hankering for some seafood chowder, this is the place – their gluten-free haddock soup is out of this world!
Honestly, Kennebunkport Maine offers a great deal of options for guests on a gluten free vacation (these are just a few favorites, I promise!) So when considering where to take your next gluten free vacation, look no further than Southern Maine!
