I have always been a fan of Inns, especially Maine Bed and Breakfasts, as I began visiting long before I became an innkeeper at a Kennebunkport Inn, but for many, BnBs are not the first thing that comes to mind when planning a vacation. Recently the Professional Association of Innkeepers International launched a campaign called “A Better Way To Stay” to bring Bed and Breakfasts to the forefront of travelers’ minds. And while it’s a groundbreaking idea for the industry, it’s premise is simple: Inns and B&Bs are truly a better way to travel.
In 23 (almost 24!) years of staying in Bed and Breakfasts, here are my top five reasons to pass on the hotel and check in to your favorite Bed and Breakfast:
5). Phenomenal linens – when you’re looking for a place to stay for your Maine Vacation, linens might not seem super important. But when you slide into a set of incredibly soft sheets, it so does!
4). Cozy rooms that are all different. Okay, you don’t actually stay in more than one room (unless you ask to!), but it is so cool that no one
else is having the same experience you are! Plus, you know that the owners and staff care. And when people care, they care how clean it is, so take off your shoes and sink your feet into that plush, clean rug – just ’cause you can! Also, let’s just address the elephant in the room right now. Bed and Breakfasts are NOT all synonymous with doilies, lace, and floral. It’s a myth.
3). Primo locations! In amazing vacation destinations like Kennebunkport Maine, Bed and Breakfasts can be closer to the action. Since they’re typically in historic buildings, they don’t have to be in commercial zones like the Hampton Inn would be. Plus, that means you can pass on the gas and walk wherever you want!
2). Great Innkeepers and staff – Hotels, no matter the brand or price, have zippo personality. Even if you choose to have little interaction with your innkeepers, you get such a wonderful feeling from being greeted warmly by name at breakfast or after a day of exploring. It’s those little things that make a getaway extra special… Let’s not forget their attention and advice – but not in a grandmotherly way! Just the best recommendations for how to make your stay perfect. The staff at Maine Bed and Breakfasts are not going to tell you their two favorite restaurants in town, they’re going to listen to what you want in a restaurant and pick the right one for you.
1). Breakfast! Need I say more? Seriously, what is better than waking up to the smell of freshly baking bread and sizzling bacon? Plus, you don’t have to worry about clean up!
So next time you are looking for a little pampering, look no further than your Maine Bed and Breakfasts, because we are the better way to stay. Happy vacationing!
