For a phenomenal dinner without any pretense, head to Joshua’s Restaurant in Wells, ME. Located just 4 miles from your Kennebunkport bed and breakfast, the Maine Stay Inn and Cottages, Joshua’s is located on Route 1 in an antique farmhouse. You’ll only find Joshua in the kitchen – a self-taught chef with world-class instincts. His creations are
always phenomenal – mostly because they are perfectly prepared with the freshest ingredients. They didn’t even need a second reminder that Johanna is gluten-free – one mention on the phone while making a reservation, and the waiter presented her with “safe” options from the menu. They even set aside a serving of their seafood special, of which they were almost sold out (just because they thought she might enjoy that gluten-free option). The service, as you probably already deduced, was equally wonderful. Water refills came as needed (not overly frequently, but we never thirsted either) and our server was attentive but not overly so. In my eyes, the mark of a truly excellent restaurant lies in their Caesar Salad. And Joshua’s, as expected, was flawless. The sautéed mushrooms were equally delectable and the fried artichokes were delish! You’ll never wonder what you are ingesting here, because every component is unadulterated, with flavors melding gently in each concoction. Every vegetable (many produced on the family farm) is cooked to perfection and the meats and
fish were done just right. The scallops? Out of this world. Despite being filled to the brim (the fresh, homemade bread – and it really is homemade, not just baked there – didn’t help matters), we couldn’t resist sharing the crème brulee. With a distinctly salty undertone, it was the perfect end to an already perfect meal.
So for one of the best values around, make sure to add Joshua’s to your short list when visiting Kennebunkport, Maine and the Maine Stay Inn.
